Isabella awakens in Italy: Presenting my novels set in Italy in Italy!

Che emozione, lo scorso giugno, presentare il mio ultimo romanzo “Waking Isabella“ ambientato in Italia – in ITALIA, tutto in ITALIANO. Per me era poetico parlare, non solo dei miei romanzi in Italiano, ma anche nelle ambientazioni che hanno ispirato le miei storie. Prima ad un pubblico molto simpatico a Montepulciano al Caffè Poliziano con una vista mozzafiato delle pianure toscane attraverso le finestre aperte. E poi ancora qualche settimana dopo alla Biblioteca Città di Arezzo – la biblioteca medievale della città proprio nel cuore del centro storico dietro l’angolo di Piazza Grande dove si svolge la giostra, accanto al Duomo e all’ombra del Fortezza medicea che corona la collina di Arezzo.

It was an extreme thrill to present last June “Waking Isabella“ my latest novel set in Italy — in ITALY all in ITALIAN! For me, it was poetic to not only talk about my novels in Italian but also in the very settings that inspired my stories. First to a sympathetic audience in Montepulciano at Caffè Poliziano with a view of the Tuscan plains through the open windows. And then again a few weeks later at the Biblioteca Città di Arezzo – the town’s medieval library right in the heart of the historic city center – right around the corner from Piazza Grande where the joust takes place, next door to Duomo and in the shadow the Medici fortress that crowns Arezzo’s hill.

Durante i miei discorsi, una delle domande che mi vengono poste molte volte è, innanzitutto, mi vengono in mente le idee per i miei romanzi in primo luogo? Per me, tutto inizia con un intrigante aneddoto storico. Poi creo un’intelligente protagonista e scelgo una città interessante in Italia in cui la mia storia possa avere luogo. Nel caso di “Waking Isabella,” dopo aver passato molto tempo ad Arezzo mi è sembrata una scelta naturale scegliere questa affascinante città toscana con le pittoresche strade e piazze, la sua arte, le leggende e la sua Giostra unica. Poi, aggiungo tante informazioni tratte dalle mie ricerche, le mie esperienze di viaggio e le osservazioni personali, e anche un po’ dalla storia dell’arte. Mescolo bene con un po’ di dramma umano, desideri privati, desideri irrealizzati, alcune tragedie e voilà! La mia storia prende vita.

During my talks, one of the questions I get asked a lot is how I come up with the ideas for my novels in the first place? For me, it all begins first and foremost with an intriguing historical anecdote. Then I create a compelling leading lady and select an interesting town in Italy in which my story can take place. In the case of “Waking Isabella,” after having spent a lot of time in Arezzo it seemed a natural choice to select this charming Tuscan hill town with its picturesque streets and piazza, its art, and legends, and its unique jousting festival. Next, I add in lots of facts from extensive research, as well as personal travel experiences and observations, and also some art history tidbits. I mix this well with human drama, private yearnings, unfulfilled desires, a few tragedies and voila! My story begins to come to life and takes shape.

“Risvegliando Isabella – perché la bellezza non può dormire per sempre” è iniziato proprio così. In effetti, l’idea più o meno mi ha sorpresa un giorno mentre stavo visitando la casa di Giorgio Vasari in Via Settembre ad Arezzo. Giorgio Vasari nacque ad Arezzo e fu un artista di spicco durante il XVI secolo e dipinse l’interno della cupola del Duomo di Firenze. Mentre giravo per la sua casa, piena di affreschi e dipinti sui soffitti, in una delle stanze, mi sono imbattuta in un ritratto di una donna del Rinascimento vestita con un elaborato abito con perle e nastri.

“Waking Isabella – because beauty can’t sleep forever” began in just this way. In fact, the idea more or less snuck up upon me one day when I was visiting Giorgio Vasari’s house in Via Settembre in Arezzo. Giorgio Vasari was born in Arezzo and was a prominent artist during the sixteenth century and painted the interior of the dome of Florence’s cathedral. As I was roaming around his home filled with lovely ceiling frescos and paintings in one of the rooms I came upon a portrait of a Renaissance woman dressed in an elaborate gown with pearls and ribbons.

Dal momento in cui l’ho vista sono rimasta ipnotizzata. Mi sono fermata a fissare il ritratto, attratta dallo sguardo negli occhi della donna e mi è sembrato che mi stesse chiamando. Quando ho dato un’occhiata all’etichetta e ho visto il nome della donna e mi sono accorta che era Isabella de’ Medici e ho capito che era la figlia di Cosimo I ed Eleonora – due personaggi del mio primo libro – avevo la pelle d’oca. Ho pensato che forse era destino che quel giorno dovessi incontrearla.   

From the moment I laid eyes on her, I was mesmerized. I gravitated to the portrait, drawn in by the look in the woman’s eyes and it felt as though she was calling out to me. When I took a closer look at the brass plate on the wall and discovered that the woman’s name was Isabella de’ Medici and realized that she was the daughter of Cosimo I and Eleonora – two characters in my first book – I felt it was destiny that I should meet her that day.

Ho lasciato la casa di Vasari e i semi per “Waking Isabella” sono stati piantati. La sensazione di aver trovato una trama intrigante è cresciuta quando sono tornata a casa e ho iniziato a fare più ricerche su Isabella e ho scoperto che era una creatura splendida e spiritosa. In un’epoca in cui era raro che una donna sposata vivesse in modo indipendente, lei aveva fatto proprio questo. Non solo era bella, ma era anche una donna dotata, talentuosa e ben istruita. Quando sua madre morì di malaria, assunse il suo ruolo nella corte dei Medici e fu molto amata dai fiorentini che la chiamavano la “Stella di Firenze,” per via delle sue virtù e talenti.

I left Vasari’s house and the seeds for “Waking Isabella” were planted. The feeling that I was on to an intriguing plotline only grew stronger when I returned home and began researching Isabella and discovered what a rare, spirited creature she was. In a time when it was unusual for a married woman to live independently, she had done just that. Not only was she a reputed beauty, but she was also a gifted, talented, and educated female. When her mother died of malaria, she assumed her role in the Medici court and was well-loved by the Florentines who called her the “Star of Florence,” because of her many virtues and talents.

Ma la cosa più sorprendente che ho scoperto di Isabella è che, a causa del suo stile di vita indipendente, fu uccisa da suo marito in una delle ville di caccia di suo padre. Si dice anche che il suo fantasma infesti ancora la villa. Nella mia ricerca per saperne di più sulla principessa dei Medici ho fatto un pellegrinaggio alla villa Cerreto Guidi in Toscana dove Isabella è stata assassinata. Sono entrata nella camera da letto e ho visto il buco nel soffitto da cui era stata abbassata la fune per appenderla. Mi sono unita ancora una volta a Isabella quel giorno e una gran parte di quello che ho vissuto quel giorno a Cerreto Guidi l’ho intrecciata nella mia storia.

But, the most startling thing I discovered about Isabella was that because of her waywardness and independent lifestyle, she had been murdered by her husband in one of her father’s hunting villas just outside of Florence. It is even rumored that her ghost still haunts the villa. In my quest to learn more about the Medici princess I made a pilgrimage to the hunting villa in Cerreto Guidi in Tuscany where Isabella was assassinated. I stood in the room and gazed up at the hole in the ceiling from where the rope was lowered to hang her. I bonded with Isabella once again that day and much of what I learned during my time in Cerreto Guidi I wove into my fictional story.

Quando I pezzi del mio romanzo sono andati al posto, tutto ciò che restava era creare la mia protagonista Nora, una donna contemporanea che si sta riprendendo da un divorzio, ed è perseguitata dai rimpianti per le scelte che ha fatto nella sua vita. Il viaggio alla scoperta di Nora è intrecciato in modo intricato con la storia di Isabella, e alcuni misteri, come quello di un dipinto di cui si persero le tracce quando Hitler, negli anni ’30, soppresse e distrusse l’arte. Ci sono altri protagonisti interessanti con vite complicate – alcuni risalenti al XVI secolo, e alcuni al 1940, quando Arezzo fu catturata nel conflitto tra alleati, partigiani, fascisti e nazisti – che hanno anche passato vite complicate e hanno alcuni fantasmi e riempiti loro stessi.

As the puzzle pieces of my novel started to come together, all that remained was to create my leading lady Nora, a contemporary woman recovering from a divorce, and haunted by regrets about the choices she has made in her life. Nora’s journey of self-discovery is intricately entwined with Isabella’s story, a few mysteries, as well as a painting that was lost during the war years when Hitler suppressed and destroyed art during the 1930s. There is a colorful cast of characters – some dating back to the sixteenth century, and some to the 1940s when Arezzo was caught in the conflict between the Allies, Partisans, Fascists, and Nazis – who also have complicated pasts and a few ghosts of their own.

Terminata la presentazioni dei miei libri in Italia lo scorso giugno molte persone me hanno chiesto quando sarebbe uscita la versione italiana. Sono lieta di farvi sapere che proprio adesso sto lavorando con una traduttrice italiana per realizzare questo obiettivo. In fatti sono stata contenta di avere il suo feedback l’altro giorno. Mi ha scritto questo: “Waking Isabella è incredibile: è il romanzo che ho sempre sognato di tradurre, proprio quello che mi piace leggere, e spero apprezzi il mio lavoro fino ad ora. Ecco già i primi dieci capitoli di “Waking Isabella.” La storia mi ha coinvolta così tanto che non ho potuto fermarmi.”

After my book talks ended many people asked when I would have the Italian version of the novel ready for them to read. I am happy to let you all know, that I am now working with a professional Italian translator to realize this new goal. In fact, I was pleased to have her feedback the other day. She wrote to say: Waking Isabella is amazing: it’s the novel I’ve always dreamed of translating, precisely the one I like to read, and I hope you appreciate my work so far. Here already are the first ten chapters of Waking Isabella. The story involved me so much that I couldn’t stop.
