Oggi voglio condividere con voi una favolosa esperienza che ho avuto alcuni anni fa, quando ero in viaggio in Italia. Penso che dimostri quanto pazza posso essere!

Today I want to share with you a fabulous experience I had a couple of years ago when I was traveling in Italy. I think it illustrates just how crazy I can be!

Avete mai volato come un uccello, godendo della vista dall’alto? Io sì. È successo mentre ero a trovare una mia amica in Basilicata. Tra le due cittadine di Castelmezzano e Pietrapertosa, gli italiani di Potenza hanno costruito due zip line che si estendono tra due picchi dei monti lucani della Dolomiti. La gente viene da tutta l’Italia per volare sopra le montagne come uccelli…o come angeli.

Have you ever flown like a bird through the sky, enjoying the view from on high? I have! It happened while I was visiting a friend in the Basilicata. Between the two towns of Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, the Italians in the province of Potenza have constructed two zip lines that stretch between two Lucanian Mountain Peaks in the Dolomites. People come from all over Italy to fly over the mountains like birds…or angels.

In effetti, la zip line si chiama “il Volo dell’Angelo”. Volando nell’aria, attraversando la valle nell’aria su questa linea zip si prova sensazioni mai sentite…terrore, emozioni, ed euforia! La vista è incredibile e mozzafiato.

In fact, the zip line is called “The Flight of the Angel”. Soaring through the air on this zip line you experience sensations never before felt…terror, thrill, and euphoria! The view is amazing and breathtaking!

La Zip line si chiama il Volo dell’Angelo—the flight of the Angel

Non avevo mai fatto un zip line prima di arrivare in Basilicata. Nella mia zona nella California, si possono vedere spesso le persone in deltaplani volando sopra i picchi di Mission Peak, proprio sopra il mio giardino. Ma non avevo mai sentito il bisogno di unirmi a loro. In realtà l’idea non è mai entrata nella mia testa!

I had never zipped lined before arriving in the Basilicata. In my area in California you can often see people in delta planes floating over the peaks of Mission Peak in my own back yard. But, I had never felt the urge to join them. In fact the idea never even crossed my mind!

C’è voluto un viaggio in Italia e la Basilicata per cambiare tutto questo. Prima quando la mia amica mi ha suggerito di prendere il volo dell’Angelo, pensavo che mi prendesse in giro. Ma il più ne parlavamo e più l’idea mi piaceva.

It took a trip to Italy and the Basilicata to change all that. When my friend first suggested that I take the flight of the Angel, I thought she was joking. But the more we discussed the idea, the more I liked it.

La Basilicata è una bellissima zona aspra e maestosa. Dopo aver vissuto nella zona per alcuni giorni, sono stata incuriosita dalla possibilità di volare sopra le montagne e quindi ho deciso di fare il Volo dell’Angelo.

The Basilicata is such a rugged majestic area. After living in the area for a few days, I became curious about the possibility of flying over the mountains and so I decided to take the Flight of the Angel.

Non ho portato con me le scarpe giuste, quindi la prima cosa che ho dovuto fare, era comprare un paio che potessi legare saldamente ai piedi, in modo da non perderle durante il volo!

I hadn’t brought the right shoes, so the first thing I needed to do, however, was buy a pair of that I could tie firmly, so as not to lose them during my flight!

Poi i miei amici ed io siamo andati a Castelmezzano dove ho acuistato un biglietto di andata e ritorno per la zip tra Castelmezzano a Pietrapertosa e viceversa.

Then my friends and I drove to Castelmezzano, where I purchased a round trip ticket to zipping between Castelmezzano to PIetrapertosa and back again.

Abbiamo camminato sulla montagna sopra Castelmezzano per arrivare alla stazione della linea zip. Sono stata calorosamente accolta da un gruppo di “custodi” dei Angeli che mi ha misurato, mi ha dotato di un casco e mi ha legato a un’imbracatura che era collegata ad un cavo d’acciaio.

We walked up the mountain, above Castelmezzano to the zip line station. There I was warmly greeted by a group of friendly “Angel custodians” who measured me, fitted me with a helmet, and strapped me into a harness that is connected to a steel cable.

Attenzione! È necessario comunicare con precisione il peso corretto in modo che gli assistenti di volo, possano calcolare correttamente la velocità del vostro volo. Se no, si potrebbe rallentare a metà strada, per finire pendolando sopra il fondovalle. Ma non disperate! A quel punto, uomini chiamati “Scoiattoli” scendono il filo, mano sopra mano, per raggiungere l’imbrago per tirarvi verso l’atlro lato alla sicurezza.

Listen up! You must accurately disclose your correct weight so the attendants can calculate the velocity of your flight correctly. If you don’t you might end up slowing to a halt at mid-point, dangling over the valley floor. But don’t despair! At that point, men called “squirrels” descend the wire hand, over fist to reach your harness and pull you back to the other side to safety!

Una volta era legata nell’imbracatura, ho preso un respiro profondo e ho gridato “O Mio Dio! Poi gli assistenti mi hanno spinto con forza e mi hanno lanciato nella gola per volare tra le due montagne.

Once I was securely strapped into my harness, I took a deep breath and saying O Mio Dio! I let out a scream as the men gave me a strong push and sent me soaring across the gorge between the two mountains.

La sensazione di volare era emozionante. Ho scivolato dalla montagna nell’aria godendo di una vista che gli umani raramente hanno il privilegio di vedere da tali altezze. Ci sono voluti solo pochi minuti per attraversare il grande divario e sono stata portata ad una brusca fermata una volta arrivata dall’altra parte. Penso che l’atterraggio sia stata la parte più spaventosa di tutto il viaggio!

The sensation of flying was beyond exhilarating. I slipped off the edge of the mountain and into the air, enjoying a view the humans rarely are privileged to see from such heights.

It took only a few minutes to cross the great divide and I was brought abruptly to a halt on the other side. I think the was the scariest part of the entire journey!

Dopo essere arrivata a Pietrapertosa, mi sono arrampicata su un’alra collina per raggiungere la seconda stazione di zip line, da cui ho volato di nuovo sulla valle di Castelmezzano, dove i miei amici mi stavano aspettando! Si sono congratulati con me e mi hanno offerto a un delizioso pranzo!

After arriving in Pietrapertosa, I climbed up another hill to reach the second zip line station from which I flew back across the valley to Castelmezzano, where my friends were waiting for me! They heartily congratulated me and treated me to a delicious lunch!

Quindi, la prossima volta che siete in Basilicata, dovreste provare per voi stessi il volo dell’Angelo. È un’esperienza meravigliosa che non dimenticherete mai!

So, the next time you are in the Basilicata you should try for yourselves the Flight of Angel. It is an exhilarating experience you won’t ever forget.
