“Venetian Blood by Christian Evelyn Volker
Ho portato questo libro con me quando ho viaggiato in Italia il mese scorso. L’ho letto a Venezia durante l’ultima settimana del mio soggiorno dopo aver terminato i miei programmi di lingua che ho organizzato ad Arezzo e Firenze. Mi sembrava ideale leggere un giallo ambientato a Venezia nel mio appartamento nel Dorsoduro mentre bevevo uno spritz, con l’acqua del canale lappando alla mia porta e con una vista della isola di Giudecca al di là del canale.
I brought this book along with me when I traveled to Italy last month. I was finally able to read it in Venice during the last week of my stay after finishing with my language programs in Arezzo and Venice. I thought it rather appropriate to be enjoying a murder mystery set in Venice in my apartment in the Dorsodoro, while drinking a spritz, with the canal water lapping at my door and a view of Giudecca island.
Innanzitutto è chiaro che la scrittrice nutre un forte affetto per Venezia e conosce bene la città così come la storia di Venezia. Ho particolarmente apprezzato il modo in cui ha inserito dettagli interessanti sulla città nel suo romanzo.
To begin, it is clear the author has a strong affection for Venice and knows the city well as well as her history. I particularly enjoyed the way she wove interesting facts about the city into her storyline.
Il modo in cui la storia è scritta, per la maggior parte, è abbastanza evocativa e le descrizioni della Serenissima sono a volte belle ed estremamente poetiche. Ho avuto un la netta sensazione che lei avesse visitato ogni vicolo, edificio e pensione di cui ha scritto. Venezia è sicuramente l’elemento più forte e più interessante della sua storia.
The story overall is quite evocative and the author’s descriptions of la Serenissima are at times lovely and extremely poetic. I got a vivid sense that she had visited each and every alleyway, building, and pensione of which she wrote about. Venice is definitely the strongest and most interesting “character” in her story.
La trama è complessa e piena di intrighi e colpi di scena, ricca di personaggi. Purtroppo non ho sentito una grande empatia con la signora Anna. Per essere una donna intelligente, non si capiva perché lei si lasciava cadere nelle mani di un uomo senza scrupoli, finendo in una scandalo sessuale così compromettente. Ero anche un po’ infastidita dal ritratto del detective italiano. Il modo brusco con cui trattava Anna, sin dal suo arrivo a Venezia, sembrava un po’ melodrammatico. Inoltre la fine è arrivata velocemente, concludendo la storia in maniera troppo facile.
The plot itself is complex filled with intrigue and plot twists, populated by a large cast of characters. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel a real connection with the leading lady, Anna. To begin with, I wasn’t sure why such a smart woman let herself fall into the clutches of the crooked count, landing her in such a compromising sex scandal. I was also a little put off by the portrayal of the Italian detective. His rough treatment of Anna from the moment she stepped foot in Venice to me came off as a little melodramatic. Finally, the ending came a bit too fast tying things up quickly and perhaps a bit too tidily.
Tuttavia complimenti alla scrittrice per aver raccontato la sua storia in un modo molto sentito e per aver dipinto un quadro vivido di Venezia. Comprate un libro o giocate alla lotteria per vincere una copia del libro firmato dalla scrittrice. Dopo averlo letto, fatemi sapere che ne pensate di Venetian Blood. Buona lettura!
