Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Lucrezia e oggi vi parlo della festa di San valentino. San Valentino si festeggia il 14 febbraio ed è anche conosciuto qui in Italia come “la festa degli innamorati”.

Hi everyone! My name is Lucrezia and today I am talking to you about Valentine’s day which is celebreated on February 14th and is also know here in Italy as “the holiday of lovers”.

È una festa molto sentita qui in Italia, infatti molti ristoranti organizzano serate a tema e menù speciali proprio in occasione della festa degli innamorati e molti negozi sono decorati con cuori rossi dappertutto. Ovviamente non tutti hanno una ragazza o un ragazzo e quindi c’è chi non festeggia per niente oppure festeggia con gli amici o le amiche. Per lo più sono le ragazze che, se non hanno un ragazzo, festeggiano insieme!

It is a holiday that is fairly significant here in Italy, in fact many restaurants organize theme nights and special menus around this holiday of Valentine’s day and many shops are decorated with red hearts all over the place. Obviously not everyone has a girl or boyfriend and so some don’t bother celebrating, or they celebrate with just close friends. For the most part the young girls, if they don’t have a boyfriend celebrate together!

Oggi vorrei cogliere l’occasione per sfatare il mito della frase “Ciao bella!”, penso che siano due delle parole italiane più conosciute all’estero ma anche le più usate in modo sbagliato! In Italia non usiamo questa frase quanto pensano gli stranieri, anzi quasi mai direi e soprattutto tra amiche (ma questa è un’altra storia). Non usate mai e poi mai questa frase se volete, diciamo, “rimorchiare” una ragazza! dire Ciao Bella a qualcuno che non si conosce è abbastanza maleducato e da “creep” (come direste in inglese). L’effetto che si ottiene è totalmente l’opposto a quello sperato, quindi fate molta attenzione!

Today I want to take the opportunity to dispel the myth regarding the phrase” Ciao bella!”, that I think are the most famous words in the Italian language for people abroad but also because they are the most used in the wrong way! In Italy we don’t use this phrase as much as foreigners think. Rather it is hardly ever used, unless it is among girlfriends (but that is another story). Don’t use this phrase ever, let’s say to “pick up” a girl!” Saying “Ciao bella” to someone you don’t know is rather rude and as you you would say in English kind of “creepy”. The effect you get is totally the opposite of what you are hoping for, so be careful!

Per attirare l’attenzione, siate voi stessi, non inventatevi frasi strane perché le incomprensioni linguistiche sono sempre in agguato e rischiate di fare brutte figure, quindi mantenetevi sul semplice, come per esempio un “ciao come stai? Volevo chiederti se ti andava di bere qualcosa insieme, magari un caffè” frasi di questo tipo insomma per le prime volte, non c’è certo bisogno di diventare Petrarca!

To attract attention, be yourself, do not invent corny phrases because there are sure to be linguistic misunderstandings and you will risk the chance of making a bad impression. So keep it simple, for instance like this “ciao come stai: I wanted to ask you to go out for a drink together something, or perhaps a coffee. Phrases of this type at least for the first time are the best, there is no need to become Petrarca (poet who wrote about love).

Una frase che invece potrebbe esservi utile è “I love you” che in italiano ha due traduzioni, “Ti amo” e “ti voglio bene”. La prima, ti amo, si dice tra fidanzati o comunque tra due persone che si amano. Mentre la seconda, “ti voglio bene” si usa tra amici oppure tra genitori e figli, ad esempio.

A phrase useful phrase instead is “I love you” that in Italian has two translations: “I love you” and “I love you”. The first, “ti amo” you say to a boyfriend/girlfriend or rather between two people who love each other. While the second “ti voglio bene” one uses between friends or between parents and children, for instance.
