Torre del Mangia: Siena—Climbing to the top of the tower

Mi piacciono le altezze. Mi piace stare al di sopra della terra, lontano dalla pazza folla. Mi piace essere così in alto che il mondo sembra un modello in miniatura ed i problemi della vita quotidiana sembrano di sciogliere nella nulla. In alto, sopra la terra ho una prospettiva migliore e il mondo sembra nuovo, fresco e pieno di possibilità.

I like heights. I like to be high above the ground, far from the madding crowd. I love to be so high up that the world seems like a miniature model and problems of daily life seem to melt away into insignificance. High above the ground I have a better perspective and the world seems new, fresh and full of possibilities.

L’Italia è un buon posto di visitare se vi piace le altezze. È un paese pieno pieno di campanili, duomi ed edifici pubblici che salgono verso il cielo ad altezze vertiginose. Mi ricordo bene la prima volta che ho salito sullaTorre del Mangia a Siena. Sono stata una ragazza di Iowa che non era abituata a vedere il mondo dall’alto. Ero sbalordita! Sembrava che tutti i miei sensi fossero stati risvegliati. La torre è soprannominato “Torre del mangiatore” a causa del fatto che Giovanni di Balduccio, che la realizzò nel 1338, aveva la tendenza a spendere tutti suoi soldi per cibo. Fortunatamente per chi ama altezze come me, ha risparmiato qualche spicciolo per costruire questa torre che si trova nella piazza del Campo a Siena.

Italy is a good place to go if you like heights. It is a country filled with bell towers, Duomos, and civic buildings that soar for what seems like miles into the sky. I remember the first time I climbed the Torre del Mangia in Siena. I was a girl from Iowa who was not accustomed to viewing the world from above. I was stunned! I felt that all my senses had been crisply reawakened. The tower is nicknamed “Tower of the Eater” due to the fact that Giovanni di Balduccio who built it in 1338, had a tendency to spend all his money on food. But fortunately for those who like heights like myself, he spared a few coins to build this marvelous tower located in the Piazza del Campo in Siena.

Dalle altezze vertiginose della Torre del Mangia c’è una panorama fantastico della campagna senese. Quella prima volta dalla cima della torre di Giovanni, mi meravigliai che il territorio italiano, per quanto l’occhio poteva vedere, era pieno di piccoli alberi e cespugli rotondi e nebbia porpora che sembravano proprio come i pittori del Rinascimento l’avessero raffigurato. Ho sempre pensato che questo tecnico fosse un pittorico stilizzato, ma in realtà questo è ciò che il paesaggio italiano si presenta dall’alto. Posso passare ore e ore a guardare il mondo da tali altezze splendide. Il mondo sembra un tappeto magico e io sono in timore per la sua bellezza.

From the dizzying heights of the Torre del Mangia one has a marvelous panorama of the Sienese countryside. That first time standing on top of Giovanni’s tower, I marveled that the Italian countryside, as far as the eye could see, was filled with tiny little round trees, bushes, and misty purple hazes and looked just as the Renaissance painters had depicted it. I had always thought this was just some kind of stylized painting technique, but in fact, this is what the Italian landscape looks like from above. I can spend hours gazing out upon the world from such wonderful heights. The world seems like a magic carpet and I am awed by its beauty.
