L’altro giorno qualcuno mi ha chiesto: “Quanto tempo pensi di dedicare effettivamente allo studio d’italiano ogni giorno?” All’inizio la domanda mi ha fermato per un momento e non ho avuto subito una risposta. Poi mi sono resa conto perché. Il fatto semplice è che io non metto da parte solo quindici minuti o una mezz’ora per l’apprendimento d’italiano ogni giorno. Per me, non è un compito che devo sforzarmi di fare solo dopo tutto il lavoro è fatto. Invece io cerco di trasformare ogni giorno in un’esperienza d’immersione fin dal momento in cui mi alzo, fino al momento in cui vado a letto. Ormai l’apprendimento d’italiano è diventato un modo da vivere quotidianamente.

The other day someone asked me: “How much time do you actually devote to learning Italian every day? At first, the question stopped me in my tracks and I didn’t have an immediate answer. Then I realized why. The simple fact is that I don’t just put aside fifteen minutes or a half-hour each day to work on my Italian skills. For me, it isn’t a chore that I must force myself to do only after all my other work is done. Instead, I strive to transform each day into the experience of immersion from the moment I wake up to the moment that I go to bed. By now learning Italian has become a part of my daily routine and a way of life. 

Sarebbe difficile calcolare tutti i minuti o le ore che io passo ogni giorno pensando all’italiano. A colazione accendo il computer per controllare Facebook per vedere le attività degli amici in ogni angolo del mondo. Scambio messaggi in italiano con loro e faccio i post in Italiano sulla pagina di Studentessa Matta. Non penso che ci sia un modo migliorare d’iniziare un giorno senza scrivere in italiano o condividere una bella foto del bel paese!

It would be difficult to calculate all the minutes and the hours I spend each day thinking about Italian. At breakfast, I turn on the computer to check Facebook and to see all my friend’s activities all over the world. I exchange messages in Italian and make posts to the Studentessa Matta facebook page. I can’t think of a better way to begin a day without writing in Italian or sharing a beautiful photo of “il bel paese”.

Dopo aver preparato un buon caffè nella caffettiera italiana (aka Moka) vado a lavoro. Il pendolare non è troppo male visto che lavoro da casa e non ci sono gli incidente, tranne quando io inciampo e rovescio il caffè. Con la radio italiana accesa e la musica italiana nel sotto fondo, faccio il mio lavoro in due lingue; rispondo in italiano alle email degli soci italiani per i “Matti Viaggi” e ai clienti americani di disegno in inglese. Mentre lavoro penso sempre al prossimo argomento del blog e ai prossimi disegni per “Matta Designs”.

After having prepared a nice coffee in my Italian coffee pot, I go to work. The commute isn’t all that bad since I work from home and the only accidents I have are when I trip and spill my espresso. With Italian radio turned on and music floating around in the background, I conduct my work in two languages; I respond in Italian to emails from my Italian partners for the Matta Language Immersion Trips and to my American design clients in English. As I work I am always thinking about the next blog topic and what my next designs will be for Matta Designs.

A metà giornata, vado in palestra e durante l’allenamento guardo una puntata di “Un posto al sole” su ipod. Durante l’episodio sento alcune espressioni divertente e quando torno a casa vado dritto al computer per condividerle sulla bacheca di Facebook. Qualche giorno faccio un chat su skype con un’amico in Italia o controllo “Twitter” o seguo una reportage qualcosa su “Repubblica TV” su internet.

At midday, I go to the gym and while I work out I watch an episode of Un posto all sole on my ipod. During the episode, some of the expressions strike me as interesting and when I return home I go straight to my computer to share them on the Studentessa Matta Facebook page. Some days I skype with a friend in Italy or I check my Twitter feed or follow a report on Repubblica TV on the internet.

Alla fine del giorno prendo alcuni minuti per giocare a “Duolingo” a praticare la grammatica, o gioco con gli amici a “Angry Words” per imparare nuove parole italiane. Dopo cena vado a spasso con i cani e ascolto su ipod “News in Slow Italian” o altri podcast come “Dylan Dog” su RAI 2 . Qualche volta organizzo un “Italian movie night” con gli amici a casa mia per guardare un film insieme, altre volte vado a fare due chiacchiere con il gruppo di Meet Up che frequento nella zona. Prima di andare a letto do un’ultimo sguardo a Facebook per dire buona notte agli amici…o nel caso del fuso d’orario, per dire buon giorno agli amici italiani!

At the end of the day I take a few minutes to play Duolingo to practice grammar, or I play with friends Angry Words to learn new vocabulary. After dinner, I go for a walk with the dogs and listen to News in Slow Italian on my ipod or to a podcast of Dylan Dog on Rai 2.  Sometimes I will arrange an “Italian movie night” with friends at my house to watch a film together, other times I will participate in a local Meet Up Group for Italian speakers. Before going to bed I take one last peek at Facebook to say good night to friends…or in the case of the time difference, to say good morning to my friends in Italy!

Vedete che ci sono molti modi per riempire i vostri giorni con italiano e l’apprendimento non dovrebbe essere relegato ad essere un compito noioso e tedioso o gli studi ansiosi degli esami. Invece con un po’ di creatività, l’apprendimento d’italiano può diventare uno stile di vita molto divertente che può riempire tutto il giorno – dal momento in cui vi alzi al momento in cui voi andate a letto – con piacere!

As you can see there are many ways to fill your days with Italian and learning the language should not be relegated to boring and tedious homework assignments or cramming for exams. Instead with a bit of creativity, learning Italian can become a fun lifestyle choice and can fill your entire day – from the moment you get up to the moment you go to bed – with pleasure!
