ancora piuttosto inquietante e raccapricciante dopo tutti questi anni—eppure straordinariamente bello!
L’altro giorno una mia amica di Chicago mi ha inviato un messaggio inviandomi un link a un articolo sulle location cinematografiche italiane del film del 1999 “The Talented Mr. Ripley” con Matt Damon, Jude Law e Gwyneth Paltrow. Certo che ho visto il film in 1999 quando è uscito per la prima volta, ma la nota della mia amica mi ha fatto interessare a guardarlo di nuovo per vedere se era come ricordavo. Quindi, per il mio volo in California lo scorso fine settimana per vedere mio figlio laurearsi all’Università della California a Davis, ho scaricato il film da Amazon e l’ho guardato sull’aereo.
The other day a friend of mine from Chicago sent me a message sending me a link to an article about the Italian movie locations of the 1999 film “The Talented Mr. Ripley” starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Of course, I saw the movie when it first came out back in 1999, but my friend’s note got me interested in watching it again to see if it was as I remembered. So, for my flight out to California last weekend to see my son graduate from the University of California at Davis, I downloaded the movie from Amazon and watched it on the plane.
Caspita!! Sono così felice di averlo fatto! Avevo quasi dimenticato quanto fosse eccellente il film. È un thriller cupo ambientato negli anni ’50 in Italia. Anthony Minghella dirige una storia che ci sposta dalle idilliache acque blu della soleggiata Costiera Amalfitana a un’affollata discoteca di Napoli, alle rovine di Roma e infine ai canali di Venezia. Ogni scena è fotografata e coreografata magnificamente. L’Italia non smette mai di piacere di persona o nei film! Un ulteriore vantaggio — ci sono le frasi italiane intrecciati nei dialoghi dagli attori americani e italiani.
Wow! I’m so glad I did! I’d almost forgotten how excellent the film is. It is a dark crime thriller set in the 1950s in Italy. Anthony Minghella directs a story that moves us from the idyllic blue waters of the sun-drenched Amalfi Coast to a busy nightclub in Napoli, to the ruins of Rome and eventually the canals of Venice. Every scene is photographed and choreographed beautifully. Italy never ceases to please in person or in films! An added bonus is the Italian phrases bandied about by Italian extras and the cast alike.
In poche parole, la trama è questa: a Tom Ripley (interpretato da Matta Damon) viene chiesto dal armatore Mr. Greenleaf, di andare in Italia per recuperare suo figlio Dickie Greenleaf – un milionario festaiolo (interpretato da Jude Law) e riportarlo a casa a New York.
In a nutshell, the storyline is this: Tom Ripley (played by Matta Damon) is asked by shipping magnate Mr. Greenleaf, to go to Italy to retrieve his son Dickie Greenleaf — a millionaire-good-time-party-boy (played by Jude Law) and bring him home to New York.
Scopriamo presto che Tom Ripley, un accordatore di piano impoverito alla disperata ricerca di amici e di una vita eccitante, è un maestro camaleonte. Può imitare gli accenti delle persone, creare firme e assumere l’identità di altre persone con facilità. Quando Tom accetta la proposta di Mr. Greenleaf e si avventura in Italia, e stabilisce il primo contatto con Dickie, Tom è immediatamente colpito e forma un’ossessione perfettamente inquietante per Dickie. Afferma che Dickie è il fratello che non ha mai avuto ed è attratto dalla calda personalità socievole di Dickie e da Margie, la fidanzata americana di Dickie.
We soon discover that Tom Ripley, an impoverished piano tuner desperate for friends and an exciting life, is a master chameleon. He can imitate people’s accents, forge signatures and assume other people’s identities with ease. When Tom accepts Mr. Greenleaf’s proposal and ventures off to Italy, and makes first contact with Dickie, Tom is immediately smitten and forms a perfectly creepy obsession for Dickie. He claims Dickie is the brother he never had and is drawn in by Dickie’s warm gregarious personality and by Margie, Dickie’s American girlfriend.
Mentre i giorni d’oro passano, Tom inizia a dimenticare l’incarico che gli è stato assegnato. Invece, affascinato dallo stile di vita dell’élite viziata e ricca, entra goffamente nel mondo di Dickie. Comincia a desiderare non solo i beni dell’altro uomo: il suo sassofono, i vestiti, gli anelli e in una certa misura Margie, anche se i suoi veri affetti romantici giacciono davvero ai piedi di Dickie. Ma non ci vuole molto prima che Dickie si stanchi di Tom e calpesti quei desideri ardenti che mandano Tom in un turbine di rabbia e disperazione.
As the golden days slip by, Tom starts to forget the assignment he has been tasked with. Instead, fascinated by the lifestyle of the spoiled, wealthy elite, he awkwardly enters Dickie’s world. He begins to covet not only the other man’s possessions — his saxophone, clothing, rings, and to some degree Margie, even though his genuine romantic affections really lie at the feet of Dickie. But, it doesn’t take long before Dickie grows tired of Tom and tramples upon those ardent longings sending Tom into a tailspin of rage and despair.
La storia di Tom è scioccante e affascinante e, alla fine, profondamente triste e inquietante, poiché Tom alla fine distrugge con freddezza le stesse cose della vita che brama: amore e accettazione.
Tom’s story is shocking, and fascinating, and, in the end, profoundly sad and disturbing, as Tom eventually coldly destroys the very things in life he yearns for — love and acceptance.

Se vuoi fare un viaggio in poltrona in Italia, per ballare a “Tu vo’ fa’ l’Americano”, per bere un cappuccino in Piazza di Spagna e per sbavare sui costumi anni ’50 (e puoi sopportare intrighi, un po’ di violenza e suspense), questo è un film per te.
If you want to take an armchair trip to Italy, to dance to “Tu vo ‘fa’ l’Americano”, to drink a cappuccino in Piazza di Spagna and to drool over 1950s costumes (and you can bear intrigue, a little violence, and suspense), this is a movie for you.
Il cast stellare comprende anche Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman e Jack Davenport. Posso solo dire buona fortuna al personaggio di Cate Blanchett, Meredith… sembra solo questione di tempo prima che Tom debba fare ciò che deve essere fatto per sopravvivere.
The stellar cast also includes Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jack Davenport. I can only say good luck to Cate Blanchett’s character Meredith… it seems only a matter of time before Tom must do what needs to be done to survive.
