We did it!!!!

Il 2021 Matta & Lucca Italian School Language program in Italy è stato un grande successo e non potevo essere più contenta! (L’espressione “Ce l’abbiamo fatta!” ha più significato per me adesso – ed è molto facile adesso da ricordare! 🙂 )

The 2021 Matta & Lucca Italian School Language Immersion program in Italy was a big success and I couldn’t be happier! (The Italian expression “Ce l’abbiamo fatta!” / “We did it!” has new meaning for me now — and now it is so easy to remember! 🙂 )

Nonostante le difficoltà del viaggio in Italia questo settembre, tre donne intrepide si sono unite a me nella bellissima città murata di Lucca per immergersi nella lingua e nella cultura. Venivano dall’Inghilterra e dall’America (Florida e California). Potrebbe essere stato un po’ difficile affrontare tutti gli ostacoli per salire a bordo degli aerei che ci hanno portato in Toscana quest’anno, ma una volta che abbiamo toccato terra, le cose sono diventate molto più facili. in dall’inizio siamo diventati subito amici e sembrava che la settimana a Lucca fosse volata via mentre prendevamo lezioni a scuola, facevamo escursioni e chiacchieravamo con artigiani italiani, produttori di vino e amici.

Despite the difficulties of traveling to Italy this September, three intrepid women joined me in the beautiful walled city of Lucca to immerse in language and culture. They came from England and America (Florida and California). It may have been a bit difficult jumping through hoops to board the planes that took us to Tuscany this year, but once we touched the ground, things got a lot easier. Right from the beginning, we became fast friends and it seemed the week in Lucca flew by as we took classes at the school, went on excursions, and chatted with Italian artisans, winemakers, and friends.

Sto ancora viaggiando in Italia per alcune settimane di più… quindi ho poco tempo per postare, ma volevo aggiornarvi su quello che abbiamo fatto. Quindi ecco un breve riassunto fotografico della nostra settimana insieme.

I’m still traveling in Italy for a few more weeks… so have little time to post, but I wanted to catch you all up on what we did. So here is a brief photo recap of our week together.

Il nostro primo sabato insieme abbiamo visitato l’azienda vinicola a conduzione familiare Fattoria Urbani fuori Lucca dove abbiamo fatto un tour dei vigneti, una spiegazione della storia della famiglia e una degustazione di vini. Alla cantina della Fattoria Urbani, siamo stati raggiunti dalla mia amica e insegnante di italiano Francesca Mazza per una bella chiaccherata!

Our first Saturday together we visited the Fattoria Urbani Family-run winery outside of Lucca where we had a tour of the vineyards, an explanation of the family’s history, and a wine tasting. At the Fattoria Urbani winery, we were joined by my friend and Italian teacher Francesca Mazza for una bella chiaccherata!

Dopo una delle nostre escursioni, il nostro gruppo ha visitato il nuovo bar MAGELLANO in via Oliva, appena aperto dal fratello di Agnese che insegna alla Lucca Italian School. È un posto vivace, ottima musica e fantasiosi drink misti!

After one of our excursions, our group visited the new bar MAGELLANO in via Oliva, just opened by the brother of Agnese who teaches at Lucca Italian School. It is a lively place, great music and fancy mixed drinks!

La prima domenica del nostro programma abbiamo fatto un’escursione a Volterra. Nonostante l’inizio piovoso della nostra giornata, il cielo si è rasserenato e una volta arrivati (a circa un’ora da Lucca in macchina) abbiamo trascorso una bellissima giornata per passeggiare ed esplorare l’antica città etrusca.

The first Sunday of our program we went on an excursion to Volterra. Despite the rainy start to our day, the skies cleared and once we arrived (about an hour from Lucca by car) we had a beautiful day to wander and explore the ancient Etruscan city.

Volterra ha anche rovine romane ed è famosa per il suo alabastro. Di seguito una foto di Franco, un maestro artigiano dell’alabastro, che ci ha mostrato come lavora la pietra per creare tutti i tipi di meravigliosi oggetti d’arte.

Volterra also features Roman ruins and is famous for its alabaster. Below is a picture of Franco, a master alabaster craftsman, who showed us how he works the stone to created all kinds of wonderful art objects.

Tornati a Lucca, abbiamo percorso le mura – le Mura (un sostantivo irregolare che significa le mura di fortificazione esterne di una città). Anche se fa ancora caldo ed è tarda estate, si respira aria di autunno. Le foglie cadono, ma ancora, le mura sono popolate persone che corrono, ciclisti, passeggini e camminatori. Abbiamo seguito questo percorso fino a scuola ogni giorno, a circa 10 minuti a piedi dall’hotel alla scuola. Che bel modo di iniziare la giornata!

Back in Lucca, we walked the walls – le Mura (an irregular noun which means the outer fortification walls of a city). Although it is still warm and it is late summer, there is a feeling of fall in the air. Leaves are falling, still, the top of the wall is populated with runners, bikers, strollers, and walkers. We followed this path to school every day — just about a 10-minute walk from the hotel to school. What a lovely way to begin the day!

Fortunatamente, il tempo è stato bello e tutte le lezioni di una settimana sono state tenute all’aperto permettendoci di abbandonare le nostre mascherine!

Here are the girls outside of Lucca Italian School, a photo taken from the wall, and a couple of images of students being taught in the gardens of the school. Fortunately, the weather was beautiful and all week-long classes were taught outside allowing us to ditch our masks!

Anche se abbiamo camminato per la città, tante volte, avanti e indietro, lungo le mura, giù per Fillungo, e attraverso piazza San Michele … una ragazza può sognare di scappare in una vespa rosso vivo!

Although we walked the city, around and around, back and forth, along the top of the wall, down Fillungo, and across piazza San Michele… a girl can dream of zipping off in a bright red vespa!

Abbiamo frequentato un corso d’arte con Susanna un pomeriggio. Le donne si sorpresero di possedere talenti artistici che non sapevano di avere!

We took an art class with Susanna one afternoon. The women surprised themselves that they possessed artistic talents they never knew they had!

Abbiamo mangiato bene ogni sera! Dalle zuppe di farro, pomodori e frutta fresca alle tagliate di carne e ai formaggi freschi… il cibo delizioso non ci è mai mancato!

We ate well every night! From soups made of farro, pomodori e frutta fresca to sizzling tagliata di carne and fresh cheeses… we never lacked for delicious food!

Certo, a Lucca bisogna salire sulle torri! E l’abbiamo fatto! Siamo saliti sul campanile appena aperto del Duomo – San Martino e in cima alla Torre Guinigi per avere una splendida vista sulla città e sulla campagna circostante.

Of course, in Lucca, you must climb the towers! And we did! We climbed the newly opened bell tower of the Duomo – San Martino as well as to the top of the Guinigi Tower for a glorious view of the town and surrounding countryside.

Quando mi imbatta in una gelateria che si chiama “MATTA” come posso non fermarmi a prendere un cono!

When I come across a gelateria named “MATTA” how can I not stop and have a cone!

Un pomeriggio abbiamo incontrato il maestro liutaio artigiano — Fabio il liutaio! Ci ha spiegato tutto del suo lavoro e della sua passione per la musica. Più tardi quella sera abbiamo assistito a un concerto di Puccini nella chiesa di San Giovanni.

One afternoon we met the master artisan violin maker — Fabio the liutaio! He explained to us all about his work and his passion for music. Later that evening we attended a Puccini concert in the church of San Giovanni.

Insieme ci godiamo le bellezze della città, fare shopping e passeggiare per le piazze di Lucca… e sempre tempo per il gelato!

Enjoying the city sights together, shopping, and wandering through the piazzas of Lucca… and always time for Gelato!

Un pomeriggio abbiamo fatto una “gita” alla Villa Reale, la casa della principessa Elisa, sorella di Napoleone Bonaparte. Ha rimodellato il palazzo per intrattenere gli ospiti all’interno e all’aperto negli splendidi giardini che circondano il luogo. Paganini ha anche suonato nel teatro all’aperto qui.

One afternoon we took a “gita” to the Villa Reale, the home of Princess Elisa – the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte. She refashioned the palace to entertain guests indoors and out of doors in the beautiful gardens that surround the place. Paganini even played in the outdoor garden theater here.

Che gioia pedalare lungo la cima delle mura di Lucca, sentire la brezza sul viso, ascoltare l’italiano parlato intorno a te e goderti un rilassante pomeriggio “libero”.

Such a joy to bike along the top of Lucca’s wall, feel the breeze on your face, listen to Italian spoken around you and enjoy a relaxing “free” afternoon.

Alla fine della settimana, abbiamo avuto un corso di cucina a scuola con Eva e Chiara. Abbiamo preparato fiori di zucca ripieni e fritti, cantucci, pasta fresca (tortellini ripieni di spinaci) e pollo stufato in salsa di limone e timo.

At the end of the week, we enjoyed a cooking class at the school with Eva and Chiara. We made stuffed and fried zucchini flowers, cantucci, fresh pasta (tortellini stuffed with spinach) and chicken simmered in lemon and thyme sauce.

Per la nostra ultima escursione, ci siamo avventurati in Liguria e Lerici. Abbiamo camminato per la città, ci siamo goduti l’espresso e le bevande al caffè shakerato. Alcuni di noi sono persino riusciti a raggiungere la spiaggia per un tuffo nell’oceano. Abbiamo concluso la nostra visita con un delizioso pranzo di “arrivederci” a base di pesce fresco, cozze, vongole e filetti di bronzino!

For our last excursion, we ventured off into Liguria and Lerici. We walked through the city, enjoyed espresso and shakerato coffee drinks. Some of us even made it to the beach for a dip in the ocean. We topped off our visit with a lovely “farewell” lunch of fresh seafood, mussels, clams and filets of bronzino!
