Stanley Tucci’s new show: Searching for Italy

Ho appena visto la prima puntata di “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” e penso che sia fantastico e faccia venire l’acquolina in bocca!

I just watched the first episode of “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy,” and I think it is mouthwateringly fantastic!

Lo spettacolo si concentra sulla cucina nelle varie regioni d’Italia e Tucci è simpatico quanto coinvolgente.

The show focuses on cooking in the various regions of Italy,
and Tucci is a delightful and engaging host!

Il primo episodio inizia in Toscana. Che divertimento vedere Tucci girare per le strade di Firenze mentre scopre di più sulla cucina Fiorentina, la Bistecca che si sciogliere nella bocca, il cibo di strada, il vino distribuito attraverso porte segrete, così come la cucina povera—i piatti di contadini fatto con il famoso pane fiorentino non salato.

The first episode begins in Tuscany. What fun to watch Tucci stroll the streets of Florence as he discovers more about Florentine cuisine, melt in your mouth Bistecca, street food, wine doled out through secret doors, as well as cucina povera – cooking peasant dishes with Florence’s famous unsalted bread.

Lo spettacolo si apre con Stanley, sua madre e suo padre che vanno a trovare l’appartamento dove la famiglia ha vissuto quando era un ragazzo durante un anno sabbatico mentre suo padre, un professore d’arte, studiava arte e sua madre imparava a cucinare piatti italiani.

The show opens with Stanley and his mom and dad visiting the apartment where the family lived when he was a young boy during a sabbatical while his father, an art professor, studied art and his mother learned to cook Italian dishes.

Stanley continua con incontri con una restauratrice d’arte, uno storico del rinascimento e diversi esperti di cibo. Ci vengono proposte ricette per deliziosi piatti regionali e gli scatti più belli della zona. La cinematografia è ricche in tonalità viola che si fondono con i colori ambra e rosso marrone degli edifici medievali. Mentre sveniamo per il fascino di Firenze, possiamo quasi quasi sentire l’odore della Bistecca grigliata sui rami di ulivo, assaggiare il dolce Vin Santo e cantucci, così come il saporito stufato di pesce—Cacciucco che viene cucinato nel porto toscano di Livorno.

Stanley then moves on to meet up with a Florentine art restorer, a Renaissance historian, and several food experts. We are treated to recipes for delectable regional dishes and the most beautifully photographed shots of the area. The cinematography drips with rich purple hues that blend into ambers and russets of the medieval building. As we swoon over the charms of Florence, we can almost smell the Bistecca being grilled over olive branches, taste the sweet Vin Santo and cantucci, as well as the savory seafood stew—Cacciucco—that is cooked up in the Tuscan seaport of Livorno.

Nel primo spettacolo, apprendiamo l’arrivo del “pomodoro” (tomato) durante il dominio della regione del duca Cosimo in seguito al suo matrimonio con Eleonora de Toledo (un personaggio importante nei miei romanzi!) Scopriamo anche come i giovani chef fiorentini modernizzano ricette che si rifanno ai contadini, trasformando i piatti tradizionalmente poveri dei contadini in prelibati cucini per i ricchi e sofisticati.

In the first show, we learn about the arrival of the “pomodoro” during Duke Cosimo’s rule of the region following his marriage to Eleonora de Toledo (a prominent character in my books!). We also discover how young Florentine chefs are modernizing recipes that hark back to the contadini — turning traditionally poor dishes of the peasants into cuisine for the rich and sophisticated.

Best of all… Italian is spoken.

Sono così contenta di scoprire che Tucci ha imparato un po’ di Italiano per partecipare calorosamente con gli italiani con cui interagisce nello show. Il suo accento è buonissimo. È bello sentire i suoi ospiti italiani parlare la lingua e immaginarmi in Italia proprio accanto a Tucci. Che divertimento avremmo tutti!

I’m so pleased to learn that Tucci brushed up on his Italian to participate more fully with the Italians he interacts with on the show. His accent is quite good. It is lovely to hear his Italian guests speak the language and imagine myself in Italy right beside Tucci. What fun we’d all have!

Insomma, penso che Tucci sia divertente, elegante e coinvolgente. Questo è uno spettacolo da guardare! Ricorda a tutti noi perché impariamo l’italiano e perché vogliamo tornare in Italia!

In summation… I think Tucci is funny, savvy, and engaging. This is a show to be watched! It reminds us all why we learn Italian and why we want to return to Italy!
