“Spensieratezza” è una bella parola. Significa uno stato d’animo di chi è sereno, senza preoccupazioni. Tante volte si dice che gli adulti dovrebbero vivere la vita in un modo così, nonostante i tanti problemi quotidiani.
“Carefree” is a beautiful word. It means the state of mind of someone who is peaceful and without worries. So many times it is said that adults should life life in such a way, despite the many problems we must face on a daily basis.
Non c’è un periodo più adatto di Carnevale di mettere in pratica questo stato dell’anima. Il termine Carnevale deriva dal latino “carnem levare”, che significa letteralmente “eliminare la carne”, poiché anticamente indicava il banchetto che si teneva l’ultimo giorno di Carnevale (martedì grasso), subito prima del periodo di astinenza e digiuno della Quaresima, cioè dal giorno successivo alla fine del Carnevale sino al giovedì santo prima della Pasqua.
There is no more suitable time of the year than Carnival to put this state of being into practice. The word Carnival comes from the Latin word “carnem levare” which lieterally means “eliminate the flesh”, as originally indicated by the banquet that was held on the last day of Carnival (Mardi Gras) just before the period of abstinence and fasting of Lent, the day following the end of Carnival until the Thursday before Easter.

Carnival is celebrated all over the world of course, but no where do they do it up in a big way… like they do it in Venezia! In questo clima festoso e goliardico, vedremo sfilata e carri e ci lasceremo travolgere da una pioggia di coriandoli e vestiremo i panni inconsueti delle maschere più originali. Ma vi siete mai fermati a chiedervi i motivi simbolici per cui si veste e nasconde la vera identità dietro una maschera?
In this festive and bohemian atmosphere we see floats and parades and we let ourselves be swept away by a rain of confetti and we dress up in fantastic costumes and masks. But have you ever stopped to wonder about the symbolic reasons why we dress up and hide our true identities behind a mask?
Una delle ipotesi sull’origine di questa usanza è da ricercarsi nell’antica tradizione pagana. Durante il periodo dei Saturnali che ha poi dato origine al carnevale, si era soliti sovvertire ogni tipo di gerarchia sociale, invertendo così i ruoli imposti dalla società.
One of the hypotheses on the origin of this custom is found in ancient pagan tradition. During the time of the Saturnalia which then gave rise to Carnival, it was the custom to subvert any kind of societal hierarchy, thus reversing the roles imposed by society.
Il povero per una volta poteva tramutarsi in ricco e viceversa. Dunque chi lo voleva, poteva nascondere la sua vera identità con dei travestimenti anche scherzosi per dedicarsi ai piaceri del corpo e del cibo.
The poor for once could turn themselves in to men of privilege and vice versa. So those who wanted it could hide their true identities with playful disguises to devote themselves to pleasures of the body and food.
Questa pratica sì presa stabile a Venezia durante il Medioevo e con una maschere che nascondeva il viso si potrebbe violare qualsiasi regola e tutti erano anche liberi di insultare il Doge, il sovrano della città.
This practice took firm hold in Venice during the middle ages and during the period of Carnival, with a mask concealing your face you could violate any rule and were even free to insult the doge, the ruler of the city.
La scelta di una nuova identità diventa paradossalmente uno dei modi togliersi la maschera che indossiamo tutti i giorni, di uscire dal personaggio che abbiamo costruito noi stessi e da quello che gli altri ci hanno cucito addosso.
The choice to assume a new identity becomes paradoxically one of the ways to take off the mask we wear every day, leaving behind the character that we have built for ourselves or what others have created.
La burla e le trasfigurazioni sono stati ulteriormente rafforzati dalla nascita della Commedia dell’arte. Nel teatro del XVI secolo i personaggi di Arlecchino, Pulcinella, Colombina sono stati i personaggi dei di servitori furbi e senza scrupoli che si prendevano gioco dei loro padroni o di personaggi come il Dottor Balanzone, caricatura del medico sapiente.
The pranks and transformations were further reinforced by the birth of the Commedia dell’arte. In the sixteen century theater the characters of Arlecchino, Pulcinella, Colombina were the characters of the crafty and sometimes unscrupulous servants who mocked their masters like Dr. Balanzone and il Medico.

The romantic woman who daydreams, who believes in a knight in shining armor, but often has to deal with a harsher more mundane reality might choose to be a “fairy” or a “princess”.
Color che desiderano spezzare l’immagine di brava ragazza a favore di una figura che non abbia tabù potranno scegliere la maschera da “diavolessa”.
Those who wish to break from the “good girl” image in favor of a personality that has no taboos or restriction might choose to dress as the devil.
Le donne che si vestono da “gatta”, “pantera”, “leonessa” vogliono essere sensuali ma con un pizzico di indipendenza, ribellione e libertà.
Women who dress as a “cat”, “panther”, “lioness” want to be sensual but with a bit of independence, rebellion and freedom.
L’uomo che sceglie di travestirsi da “soldato” o “combattente” forte e senza paura mette in evidenza caratteristiche sopite come desiderio di avventura e di rivalsa.
The man who chooses to disguise himself as a “soldier” or “fighter” might harbor a strong sentimentality for being strong and fearless, highlighting a dormant desire for adventure and revenge.
Chi opta per un “supereroe” può suscitare simpatia perché emerge comunque un lato infantile e fantasioso per l’uso dei superpoteri.
Those who opt for a “superhero” image might feel a bond with their imaginative inner child, wanting to use superpowers.
L’uomo che decide di vestirsi da “donna” non teme il giudizio degli altri e sa mettersi in gioco.

Those who disguise themselves as a “king” have need of total power and seek independence and freedom.

Those who dress as the people’s favorite criminals, like “Zorro” or “Robin Hood” want to be recognized and appreciated for their kindnesses, honesty and sense of justice.
