A casa di nuovo. Back home again.

Allora…sono appena tornata a casa in California dopo aver viaggiato in giro per l’Italia per sei settimane. Ormai sono a casa da circa settantadue ore. Ho disfatto le valigie, ho fatto il bucato, ho preso i cani dal canile, sono andata a fare la spesa e ho letto tutta la posta. Ho dormito anche tutta la notte e ho persino fatto un salto nella palestra locale. Mi sembra addirittura di passare attraverso i fusi orari come un ninja!

Well, I’m back home in California after traveling around Italy for six weeks. I’ve been home for approximately seventy-two hours. I’ve unpacked, done my laundry, picked up the dogs, gone grocery shopping and gone through all the mail. I’m also sleeping through the night and have even made an appearance at the local gym. It seems I move through time zones like a Ninja!

Oggi su Facebook qualcuno mi ha chiesto come mi sento adesso che sono a casa di nuovo dopo tutto questo tempo. Gli ho risposto che mi sento benissimo. A dire la verità mi sento a mio agio sia in Italia che in California e alla fine del mio soggiorno mi sono resa conto che avrei potuto rimanere un altro paio di settimane…anche mesi…una cosa buona visto che nei prossimi anni il mio obiettivo è di continuare a prolungare i miei soggiorni. Ho già prenotato un appartamento ad Arezzo per l’intero mese di giugno e uno a Montepulciano per settembre. Sarò in entrambe le città per via dei programmi linguistici del prossimo anno. Se volete essere coinvolti, mi piacerebbe che vi uniste a me. Le iscrizioni per entrambi i programmi sono già partite.

Today on Facebook someone asked me how it felt to be back home after all this time. I told them I feel great. Truth be told I feel equally at home in Italy as I do in California and at the end my stay I happily realized I could have stayed another couple of weeks…even months…which is a great thing, as in the next few years my goal is to continue prolonging my stays. I’ve already booked an apartment in Arezzo for the entire month of June and one in Montepulciano for September. I’ll be in both cities for next year’s Matta language immersion programs. A settembre mi sono divertita molto con il mio gruppo linguistico 2018 ad Arezzo. Ogni volta che torno ad Arezzo scopro qualcosa di nuovo della città. Faccio anche nuove amicizie…e non mi stanco mai della giostra. Questa volta è stato molto soddisfacente perché il nostro quartiere – Porta Santo Spirito – ha vinto il torneo. Eravamo tutti piuttosto estatici…ma ve lo racconterò in un prossimo post sul blog.

In September I had a blast with my 2018 language group in Arezzo. Every time I return I discover something new about the city. I also make new friends…and I never get tired of the town’s jousting festival. This time around it was very satisfying because our neighborhood – Porta Santo Spirito – won the tournament. We were all pretty ecstatic…but I will tell you all about that in a future blog post. 

Mentre ripenso ai miei viaggi, mi sono accorta che ho vissuto molte cose nuove, ho assaggiato cibo da varie regioni, ho fatto molte nuove avventure e ho visto parti d’Italia che non avevo mai visto prima. Ho viaggiato da Arezzo a Catania a Monaco, a Lucerna e poi in Italia di nuovo. Ma tra tutte le cose che ho visto e ho fatto quello che rimane nella mia mente sono le connessioni tra le persone e le amicizie che ho fatto durante il mio soggiorno. Questi sono i momenti più speciali e la conoscenza della lingua ha reso tutto questo possibile.

As I look back over my travels, I realize I experienced many new things, tasted foods from new regions, went on many new adventures, and saw parts of Italy I hadn’t seen before. I traveled from Arezzo to Catania to Munich to Lucerne and back to Italy again. But of all the things I saw and did what sticks out most in my mind are the people connections I made along the way. Those are the special moments and knowing the language paved the way and helped make those connections possible.

Ad Arezzo, oltre a conoscere le persone del mio meraviglioso gruppo – che comprendeva una coppia di New York, una donna australiana, una donna del Colorado e amici di San Francisco – ho incontrato una famiglia simpatica che gestisce una cantina appena fuori la città. Ho anche fatto amicizia con un’artista di affreschi con la quale il mio gruppo lavorerà il prossimo anno. Ho ripreso le amicizie passate e ho abbracciato cari amici che ormai sono come una famiglia.

In Arezzo, in addition to getting to know the people in my wonderful group – which included a couple from New York, a woman from Australia, a woman from Colorado, and friends from the San Francisco Bay Area – I met a delightful family who run a winery just outside of town. I also made friends with a delightful fresco artist with whom my group will be working with next year. I rekindled past friendships and embraced dear friends who by now are like family.

Ho anche fatto una nuova amicizia con una nuova insegnante di homestay – si chiama Sira – dalla Ligura. Lei è venuta ad Arezzo per pranzare con me in modo che potessimo incontrarci di persona. Maggiori informazioni sul suo Homestay saranno pubblicato tra poco. Restate sintonizzati.

I also made new friends with a new homestay teacher – Sira – from Liguria who drove all the way to Arezzo to have lunch with me so that we could meet in person. More about her homestay in just a few days! Stay tuned. 

A Catania, in Sicilia, sono andata a trovare un’altra insegnante di homestay – Mari – e la sua famiglia. Insieme abbiamo scoperto l’Etna, abbiamo visitato una cantina di montagna, abbiamo nuotato nel mare cristallino e abbiamo giocato sulla spiagge di sabbia bianca. Abbiamo anche fatto un’escursione a Taormina e Castelmola. Incredibile ma all’una del mattino entrambe le città erano ancora vive e le strade ben popolate!

In Catania in Sicily, I visited another homestay teacher – Mari – and her family. Together we explored Mount Etna, visited mountain wineries, swam in the crystal blue sea and played on white-sand beaches. We also made an excursion to Taormina and Castelmola. Let me tell you at 1 in the morning both those towns are still alive and busy! 

Dalla Sicilia, sono volata in Germania e con un grande gruppo di amici ho partecipato per la prima volta all’Oktoberfest a Monaco. Ho anche indossato un dirndle – il costume tradizionale bavarese – e ho bevuto tanta birra. Ero lì per il “weekend italiano” il fine settimana in cui la maggior parte degli italiani si presentavano per il festival.

From Sicily, I flew to Germany and with a big group of friends experienced for the first time Oktoberfest in Munich. I even dressed up in a dirndl – the traditional Bavarian costume – and drank my fair share of steins of beer. I was there for “Italian weekend“ – the weekend when most of the Italians show up for the festival.  

Infatti ho sentito e ho parlato più italiano di quanto avessi mai pensato possibile durante il mio soggiorno in Germania! Ma la parte migliore è stata l’incontro con uno mio amico di Napoli – Claudio – che si trovava in città per affari. Sulla strada per l’aeroporto, dopo aver visto una foto che ho pubblicato su Facebook, ha cambiato direzione solo per passare al festival per salutarmi e per bere una birra con me! Claudio è una delle prime persone che ho conosciuto online quando ho iniziato a studiare l’italiano e da allora siamo amici.

Infact, I heard and spoke more Italian than I ever thought possible during my stay in Germany! But the best part was linking up with a friend from Naples – Claudio – who happened to be in town on business. On his way to the airport, after seeing a photo I posted on Facebook, he changed course just to drop by the festival to say hi and drink a beer with me. Claudio is one of the very first people I met online when I first started learning Italian, and we have been friends ever since. 

Dopo l’Oktoberfest, sono andata in macchina dalla Germania attraversando Austria per passare per le Alpi fino ad Aosta in Italia. Da lì sono andata ad Alba per l’inizio del festival del tartufo e poi a Bergamo per trovare Elena – un’altra insegnante di homestay. Insieme abbiamo fatto una gita in città e io sono rimasta incantata dalla sua bellezza. Non vedo l’ora di tornare l’anno prossimo per saperne più di su Bergamo.

After Oktoberfest, I drove from Germany through Austria and back over the Alps to Aosta. From there I landed in Alba for the beginning of the truffle festival and then on to Bergamo to visit with Elena – another Italian language homestay teacher. Elena gave me a lovely tour of her city, and I was enchanted by its beauty. I look forward to returning next year to explore Bergamo more fully.

Ora sono a casa di nuovo negli Stati Uniti e mi sto preparando per passare l’inverno qui in California. Non sono triste per essere tornata…perché so che l’Italia è sempre pronta ad accogliermi di nuovo. Il 2019 è dietro l’angolo…e presto tornerò a casa!

And now I am back home in the U.S. and settling in for the winter here in California. I’m not sad to be back…because I know, Italy is always ready to welcome me back. 2019 is just around the corner…and soon I will be home again!
