Comunque, ho saputo dagli amici neopolitano, che l’espressione non ha un significato positive, invece vuole dire che qualcosa ha finito male. Forse, questo è in referenza al fatto che quando la frutta è veramente fuori stagione, é molle e non molto attraente o commestibile.

But, as I learned from my Neopolitan friends, the expression doesn’t have a positive meaning, rather it means that something has ended badly. Perhaps this is in reference to the fact that when the fruit is really done, and past its prime, it is pretty mushy and not all that appealing.
