Ho avuto il grande piacere di incontrare Sarah circa un anno fa, ma non qui ad Austin, in Texas, dove entrambe viviamo e praticamente siamo vicine di casa! Invece, ci siamo incontrate per la prima volta in Italia, nella splendida cittadina di Montepulciano. Fantastico, vero? Potrebbe sembrare sorprendente che i nostri percorsi non si siano incrociati in Texas, soprattutto considerando che ci seguivamo online da anni. Ma, a pensarci bene, ha perfettamente senso: condividiamo entrambe una profonda passione per i viaggi e per l’apprendimento dell’italiano, quindi incontrarci in Italia sembra proprio un destino!
I had the great pleasure of meeting Sarah about a year ago—but not here in Austin, Texas, where we both live and practically share the same backyard! Instead, we met for the first time in Italy, in the charming town of Montepulciano. Pretty amazing, right? It might seem surprising that our paths didn’t cross in Texas, especially since we had followed one another online for years. But then again, it makes perfect sense—we both share a deep passion for traveling and learning Italian, so meeting in Italy feels like fate!

Conoscere Sarah è stato un vero piacere. Il suo entusiasmo per la vita e per l’apprendimento è davvero contagioso, e la sua energia positiva illumina ogni interazione. Dal nostro primo incontro a Montepulciano, io e Sarah siamo rimaste in stretto contatto, incontrandoci spesso qui ad Austin. Getting to know Sarah has been an absolute joy. Her enthusiasm for life and learning is truly contagious, and her positive energy lights up every interaction. Since our first meeting in Montepulciano, Sarah and I have stayed in close contact, often catching up here in Austin. She has also become an active participant in several of the Matta Italian online book clubs, where her love for the language and her insightful contributions always add something special to our discussions.

Cara Melissa, Mi sono innamorata dell’Italia molti anni fa, ma quando avevo quarant’anni, ho frequentato un corso di scrittura per due settimane a Spoleto, in Umbria. Dopo le lezioni, camminavo attraverso la città per seguire un corso di italiano, una lingua bellissima.
Dear Melissa, I fell in love with Italy many years ago, but when I was forty, I attended a two-week writing course in Spoleto, Umbria. After class, I would walk through the town to attend an Italian course—a beautiful language.
Non è facile per me imparare una lingua straniera, ma ho deciso di continuare a studiare italiano. Nel 2012, sono tornata in Italia per frequentare l’università per stranieri a Perugia per un mese. Adesso cerco di tornare in Italia ogni anno.
It’s not easy for me to learn a foreign language, but I decided to keep studying Italian. In 2012, I returned to Italy to attend the Università per Stranieri in Perugia for a month. Now I try to return to Italy every year.

Più recentemente, nel 2013, ho scoperto una scuola d’italiano per stranieri che si chiama Il Sasso a Montepulciano, in Toscana. Adoro questa scuola. I miei insegnanti sono bravissimi, e i corsi sono sempre molto divertenti. Finalmente, posso parlare in italiano e frequento un corso avanzato.
More recently, in 2013, I discovered an Italian school for foreigners called Il Sasso in Montepulciano, Tuscany. I love this school. My teachers are amazing, and the courses are always a lot of fun. Finally, I can speak Italian and attend an advanced course.
Una lunga strada, ma grandi ricompense
A long road, but great rewards
Quando non sono in Italia, studio italiano con Studentessa Matta, una insegnante del Sasso via Skype, e con una tutor dell’Università del Texas. Posso leggere, scrivere, parlare e capire italiano meglio, ma ancora ho una lunga strada davanti a me.
When I’m not in Italy, I study Italian with Studentessa Matta, a teacher from Il Sasso, via Skype, and with a tutor from the University of Texas. I can read, write, speak, and understand Italian better, but I still have a long way to go.
Mi sono resa conto che il mio obiettivo di studiare italiano mi ha portato molti regali. Ho trovato nuovi amici di ogni età. Ho scoperto l’arte, il cibo, il vino, i paesaggi e, più importante, le persone italiane. Loro sono sempre amichevoli, aperti e gentili.
I realized that my goal of studying Italian has brought me many gifts. I’ve made new friends of all ages. I’ve discovered art, food, wine, landscapes, and, most importantly, Italian people. They are always friendly, open, and kind.

Sarah è stata una delle prime a iscriversi al primissimo Matta “Leggiamo” Book Club (seminario di 8 settimane) in cui abbiamo letto il romanzo di Silvia Zucca “Guida astrologica per cuori infranti.” Ha apprezzato così tanto il club del libro che si è iscritta di nuovo per leggere altri due libri con il Matta Italian Book Club, tra cui il romanzo di Niccolò Ammaniti “Io non ho paura.”
Sarah was one of the first to sign up for the very first Matta “Leggiamo” Book Club (8-week seminar), where we read Silvia Zucca’s novel An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts. She enjoyed the book club so much that she signed up again to read two more books with the Matta Italian Book Club, including Niccolò Ammaniti’s novel I’m Not Scared.
Ero incredibilmente gelosa quando mi ha mandato una foto da Taormina, in Sicilia, dove stava visitando e posava accanto a Niccolò Ammaniti! Aveva appena finito il libro nel nostro club del libro, e lì si trovava, accanto all’autore in persona.
I was totally jealous when she sent me a picture from Taormina in Sicily, where she was visiting and standing next to Niccolò Ammaniti! She had just finished the book in our book club, and there she was, standing next to the author himself.
Quando studi italiano, accadono cose meravigliose: incontri persone straordinarie! Lei si è lasciata andare, è diventata un po’ “matta,” e ha parlato con lui in italiano! Brava, Sara!
