Natale non è appena finito e in Italia stanno festeggiando un’altra festa…la festa di S. Stefano! Tutti in Italia hanno un altro giorno di vacanza e la posta non viene consegnata di nuovo fino a martedì. Questo è davvero un peccato perché ho inviato alcuni pacchetti all’inizio del mese destinati ai punti diversi in Italia e non sono ancora arrivati. Con questo giorno di vacanza, devo aspettare un altro giorno per controllare la situazione… e la suspense e l’attesa di sapere se loro saranno consegnati, mi fa impazzire. Boh!
Christmas is hardly over and in Italy they are already celebrating another holiday…the holiday of San Stefano! Everyone in Italy has another day off and the mail won’t be delivered until Tuesday. This is a real shame because at the beginning of the month I sent out packages destined for various points in Italy and they haven’t yet arrived. With this extra day of vacation I have to wait another day to track them…and the suspense and the waiting to see if they will be delivered is driving me crazy!
Se avessi solo la pazienza di una santo come S. Stefano! Chi era S. Stefano mi chiedete? Lui è stato nominato da Pietro come uno dei primi setti diaconi della chiesa primitiva. (34 dopo la morte di Cristo). Aveva un po’ di successo predicando ai suoi compagni ebrei e portando molti ad accettare Gesù come il Messia. Però dopo una disputa con i membri di una sinagoga è stato denunciato per blasfemia contro Dio e contro Mosè. È stato condannato e lapidato a morte da una folla infuriata. (Nota interessante, la follia è stata incoraggiata da Saulo di Tarso, più tardì noto come S. Paolo Apostolo.)
If only I had the patience of Saint Stefano! Who was Saint Stefano you ask? He was named by St. Peter as one of the first seven deacons of the newly formed church. (34AD) He had a bit of success preaching to his Jewish counterparts and bringing them into the fold and accepting Christ as the Messiah. But after a dispute with members of the synagogue, he was denounced for blasphemy against God and Moses. He was condemned to be stoned to death by an wild and crazy crowd. (Interesting side note: the crowd was whipped up into a heated frenzy by Saulo di Tarso, later called Saint Paul the Apostle).
Nell’arte S. Stefano è raffigurato con un grembiule diacono e con i sassi sulla testa. Per esempio, la pittura notevole di Giotto del santo (sopra), al Museo Horne di Firenze raffigura il povero santo con le pietre ancora bloccate sulla testa. C’è un’altra statua di S. Stefano di Lorenzo Ghiberti in bronzo (1427) che fa parte del ciclo delle quattordici statue dei protettori delle Arti di Firenze nelle nicchie esterne della chiesa di Orsanmichele. (Oggi l’originale si trova all’interno del museo.) Questa versione di S. Stefano è più umanistico con il suo contrapposto posa e gli mancano i sassi sulla testa!
In art Saint Stefano is depicted wearing a deacons robe and with rocks attached to his head. Take for instance Giotto’s noteworthy painting of the saint (above), in the Museo Horne in Florence, which shows the poor saint with stones still stuck in head. There is another bronze statue of Saint Stefano by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1427) that is a part of the cycle of 14 statues of the protectors of the arts of Florence in the niches on the outside of the Orsanmichele. (Today the original can be found inside the museum). This version of Saint Stefano is more humanistic with his contrapposto pose and appears with out the stones appended to his head.
S. Stefano è famoso per essere il primo martire cristiano. A differenza di tutti gli altri che l’hanno seguito, l’accoglienza di Stefano in cielo è stato speciale e unica: quando è arrivato, Gesù si è alzato. Sembra che questo sia notevole perché per tutti gli altri santi, lui si è rimasto seduto. S. Stefano era il primo è unico santo di ricevere un “standing ovation”! Non so esattamente come possiamo corroborare questo fatto, visto che nessuno di noi siamo mai andati in cielo e non siamo ritornati per verifcarlo…ma fa una bella storia, no? Hmmm. Boh, se festeggiate il giorno di S. Stefano o no…è un giorno perfetto per rilassarvi dopo Natale e finire tutti gli avanzi del giorno precedente.
Saint Stefano is famous for being the first Christian martyr. Unlike others that followed in his foot steps, the welcome that Saint Stefano received in heaven was special and unique; when he arrived, Jesus rose. It seems this is noteworthy because for all the other saints, he remained seated. Saint Stefano was the first and only saint to receive a “standing ovation”! I don’t exactly know how we can corroborate this fact, seeing as none of us has ever gone to heaven and returned to verify this…but it makes for a great story. Hmmm. Well, whether you celebrate the holiday of S. Stefano or not…it is a perfect day to relax after Christmas and eat all the left overs from the day before.
Natale finito. S. Stefano quasi finito. Ma non preoccuparvi…le vacanze continuano…abbiamo ancora capodanno che ci aspetta!
