Would you like to PRACTICE & IMPROVE YOUR ITALIAN? Would you like to SEE Rome through new eyes & LEARN TO PAINT? Immersing in language, traveling with like-minded individuals, and learning how to paint & draw is a perfect way to improve Italian conversational skills while discovering your inner artist! Our program is an exclusive opportunity for 10 individuals who want to explore Rome through language and art. In the mornings we will take Italian classes at Scud’it, an Italian School in the heart of Rome, and in the afternoons we will venture out into Roman street corners, gardens, and alleyways to paint & sketch under the guidance & instruction of Kelly.
Language Lessons at Scud’it: We will study for 3.25 hours a day for a total of 21+ hours of instruction. All language learning materials are included. Students will be placed into classes based on their levels and will have the opportunity to interact with students from all over the world. Scudit, Scuola d’Italiano was founded by Roberto Tartaglione who has been the school’s director for over twenty years. Roberto is an expert in teaching Italian as a foreign and second language and has written several Italian grammar books for foreign students. He also produces the videos “Grammatica Caffè” for Alma.tv in which he teaches Italian in the time it takes to make an espresso!
Art Lessons taught by Kelly Medford: With Kelly as our teacher we will be sketching on the street corners and gardens in the historic city center of Rome. All art supplies, paint, and sketchbooks will be provided. Kelly started Sketching Rome Tours in 2012 as a way for tourists visiting Italy’s capital city to see and experience the city in a new and creative way. Kelly is a classically trained oil painter specializing in Italian Plein air landscapes and cityscapes. She trained extensively in the U.S. before moving to Italy in 2005 to attend the Florence Academy of Art. After 6 years in Florence, Kelly moved to Rome in the fall of 2010 where she took to the streets, parks, and piazzas with her easel and where she currently paints daily. Kelly shows in both the U.S. and Italy and works regularly on private commissions. She most recently won 1st place in one of Italy’s most competitive Plein air competitions Subiaco in August of 2013, as well as the St. Simon’s Land Trust Purchase Award in April 2012. You can see her work on her website kellymedford.com
Art History Tour of Rome. We will be treated to a walking tour of Rome to see highlights led by Giulia Grassi, and Marina Giorgini, specialists in art history and archaeology. She is also the cultural events manager at Scud’it.
Accommodations: See slide show above. Our apartment is located in via Celimontana, just 300 meters from the Coliseum and just a 15-minute walk of 5-minute tram ride from Scud’It Italian school. It is on the third floor (with an elevator) of a historic building in the midst of Rome. It is stylish and elegantly furnished and was recently renovated in June 2013. Each room is spacious, quiet and bright, and decorated according to a specific color scheme. The upscale residence is located in a lovely “happening” neighborhood that has lots of restaurants and shopping. Breakfast is included and will be taken in the bar on the first floor of the apartment. There is a small garden where guests can sit and enjoy a view. Upon request, the property can offer free daily transportation to St. Peter’s Square, or to the Vatican Museums or to Metro Stations, either Line A or B. All rooms have Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a private bathroom with shower, courtesy toiletries, hairdryer, LCD TV, heating and parquet floor, daily maid service.
Group Dinners: 8 group dinners are included and we will be dining in local Roman trattorie and restaurants to sample local Roman cuisine. Breakfast included. (Lunches are not included)
2 Free Afternoons: There will be free time to wander the city on your own, shop, visit the Vatican, or Villa Borghese Galleries.
Metro/Bus ticket included
Italian Friends & Impromptu Conversation Practice: Throughout the week Roman friends will be stopping by to join us for coffee, a spritz, gelato and dinners…so there will be plenty of opportunities to practice Italian conversation skills outside of the classroom and learn more about Italy & Rome through their eyes!
Evening Activities: Throughout the week will be enjoying typical summer Roman summer activities. One night we will attend a picnic at Frascati, a summer festival with wine and music in the hills of Rome. We will also attend the street fair Lungo il Tevere and we will have the opportunity to see an Italian movie in the Open Air Cinema on Tiber Island. There will also be free concerts in the park and dancing! Of course, we will be wine tasting and gelato tasting too!
