On the threshold of a new year, I look out and believe I see traveling to Italy shining like a ray of sunshine over the distant horizon. With the vaccine now available, it will soon e possible to book our flights and return to il Bel Paese.

Se ti trovi in Italia (o se hai intenzione di andarci) nel 2021 e se la storia e lingua italiana ti affascinano, c’è una città che devi assolutamente visitare: Ravenna!
If you find yourself in Italy (or have intentions to go there) in 2021 and if find the history and the Italian language fascinates you, there is a city that you absolutely must visit: Ravenna!
Devi sapere che nella notte tra il 13 e il 14 Settembre, il più grande e famoso poeta italiano Dante Alighieri trovò la morte proprio nella città di Ravenna. Esattamente 699 anni fa!
You must know that in the nights between the 13 and 14 of September Dante Alighieri died in the city of Ravenna. Exactly 699 years ago!
Dante chi? Dante Alighieri è ritenuto il padre della lingua italiana. Potresti aver sentito della sua opera più famosa, “La Divina Commedia” o “Il De Vulgari Eloquentia”. É grazie a queste ed altre opere dello scrittore, nato nel 1,265DC a Firenze, che la lingua italiana ha potuto svilupparsi e prendere il sopravvento sulla lingua latina. Fino a quel momento, infatti, il latino era considerato la lingua principale in Italia).
Dante who? Dante Alighieri is considered the father of the Italian language. You may have heard of his most famous work, “La Divina Commedia” or “il de Vulgari Eloquentia”. It is thanks to these and other works of the writer, born in 1,265 AD in Florence, that the Italian language could develop and take over the Latin language. Until that time, in fact, Latin was considered the main language in Italy.
Ancora oggi Dante è considerato una figura fondamentale per l’Italia: “Nel mezzo del cammin di nostra vita” (i primi versi della Divina Commedia) fanno subito scattare una scintilla nella mente degli italiani. Da quasi 700 anni.

La città di Ravenna (5° città più popolosa nella sua regione, l’Emilia Romagna) è una delle tante affascinanti tappe italiane che non puoi permetterti di non visitare se viaggi in Italia!
The city of Ravenna (the most populous city in its region, Emilia Romagna) is one of the many fascinating Italian stops that you can’t afford not to visit if you travel to Italy.
Dovessi descrivere Ravenna in una sola parola, non esiterei a pensare a mosaico. Le varie basiliche e battisteri della città, risalenti al V e VI secolo, conservano il più ricco patrimonio di mosaici dell’umanità. Tanto che 8 monumenti paleocristiani della città romagnola furono dichiarati patrimonio dell’umanità dall’UNESCO nel 1996.
If I had to describe Ravenna in one word, I would not hesitate to think of mosaic. The various basilicas and baptisteries of the city, dating back to the fifth and sixth centuries, preserve the richest heritage of mosaics of humanity. So much so that 8 early Christian monuments of the Romagna city were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
Ma per quale motivo Ravenna ospita così tanti monumenti d’arte? Non molti sanno che la città romagnola è stata capitale di 3 imperi diversi: dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente, di Teodorico Re dei Goti e dell’Impero di Bisanzio in Europa.
But why does Ravenna host so many art monuments? Not many people know that the Romagna city was the capital of three different empires: the Western Roman Empire, Theodoric King of the Goths and the Empire of Byzantium in Europe.
E se non mi piace l’arte? Non preoccuparti, ci sono svariati motivi per cui vale la pena visitare Ravenna! Prima di tutto, il cibo (perchè, non dimenticare, sei pur sempre in Italia!). Entra in un ristorante ed ordina i tipici cappelletti al ragù. Sono un primo piatto che assomiglia ai tortellini, ma non chiamarli come tali (specialmente davanti a persone del posto!).
And if art isn’t your thing? Don’t worry, there are several other reasons to visit Ravenna! First of all, the food (because do not forget, you are still in Italy!). Enter a restaurant and order the typical cappelletti pasta with meat sauce. The pasta resembles tortellini, but do not call them that (especially in front of the locals!)
Un altro buon motivo per visitare la città è l’abbondanza di spiagge su cui puoi goderti una giornata di relax. A pochi chilometri da Ravenna, infatti, puoi raggiungere la Riviera Romagnola: il tratto di costa fra i più famosi in Italia per i suoi 95km di lunghezza (e di altrettanto divertimento!).
Another good reason to visit the city is the abundance of beaches on which you can enjoy a relaxing day. A few kilometers from Ravenna, in fact, you can easily reach the Riviera Romagnola: the stretch of coast among the most famous in Italy for its 95km length of diverting beaches.
Ed infine, sfrutta la varietà di eventi che si terranno a Ravenna nel 2021 per Dante. La città si popolerà di turisti da tutto il mondo ed avrà molto da offrirti!
