La trama: un trafficante d’armi di contrabbando alla fine della guerra mondiale forma una banda di disadattati e ladri per mettere in scena un colpo elaborato del leggendario tesoro di Benito Mussolini.
The plot: A contraband arms dealer at the end of World War II forms a band of misfits and rogues to stage an elaborate heist of a legendary treasure belonging to Benito Mussolini.
Rapiniamo il Duce è un nuovo Netflix film d’azione basato in parte su eventi reali. Si sapeva che Mussolini aveva un nascondiglio segreto di tesori nascosti e altamente protetti. Conteneva tutto l’oro, gioielli, denaro, dipinti e oggetti preziosi che aveva rubato al popolo italiano in nome del fascismo. Negli ultimi giorni di guerra, per salvarsi, Mussolini fuggì a nord. Sappiamo tutti quale destino ha colpito il Duce e dove è finito, ma cosa è successo al suo tesoro e dove si trova ora è ancora un mistero.
Robbing Mussolini is a new Netflix fiction action film partially based on actual events. It was well-known that Mussolini had a secret stash of treasures hidden away and heavily guarded. It contained all the gold, jewels, money, paintings, and precious objects he had stolen from the Italian people in the name of Fascism. In the final days of the war, to save himself, Mussolini fled north. We all know what fate befell the Duce and where he ended up, but what happened to his treasure and where it is now is still a mystery.

Based on this premise, the film Rapiniamo Il Duce takes focuses on a team of thieves, led by an arms dealer, that decides to break into the central headquarters of the National Fascist Party in the “black zone,” the infamously heavily guarded area of Milan, to steal the treasure.

Netflix ha distribuito il film nel ottobre del 2022. La storia ha le potenzialità per essere uno spettacolo brillante e divertente. C’è un sacco di azione e violenza, non troppo raccapricciante, così come le esplosioni, sparatorie, sirene, e aerei da combattimento che rombavano sopra la testa. Si tenta di creare un film divertente e vibrante con tocchi di modernità, come l’aggiunta di fumetti grafica super-eroe e canzoni contemporanee, come Tutto Nero (cantata dal personaggio di Matilda De Angelis e che è la versione italiana dei Rolling Stones “Paint It, Black”, 1966), Amandoti (Gianna Nannina, 2011) e Se Bruciasse La Città (Massimo Ranieri, 1969).
Netflix released the film in October of 2022. The story has the potential to be a brilliantly entertaining romp. There is plenty of action and violence, not too gruesome, as well as explosions, gun fights, sirens, and fighter planes roaring overhead. It attempts to create a punchy film with touches of modernity, such as adding comic book super-hero graphics and contemporary songs, like Tutto Nero (sung by Matilda De Angelis’s character and which is the Italian version of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It, Black,“ 1966), Amandoti (Gianna Nannina, 2011) and Se Bruciasse La Città (Massimo Ranieri, 1969).

Tuttavia, nonostante l’inclusione di queste aggiunte avant-garde, il film non offre sorprese intelligenti o colpi di scena e i personaggi non sono completamente sviluppati. Al contrario, si basa su una serie di narrazioni confuse ed esagerate tipiche di un furto cinematografico.
However, despite these unusual edgy and unusual additions, the film doesn’t deliver clever surprises or plot twists, and the characters are not thoroughly developed. Instead, it relies on various confused and overdone heist movie tropes.
Detto questo, se non prendi il film troppo sul serio ma ti permetti di sospendere l’incredulità per un’ora o due, potresti godertelo. Se vuoi un film leggermente divertente con l’italiano parlato, questo è il tuo biglietto! È un film d’avventura in costume molto improbabile e frenetico ambientato a Milano durante gli ultimi giorni del regime fascista con una colonna sonora di musica contemporanea. That said, if you don’t take the film too seriously but allow yourself to suspend disbelief for an hour or two, you might enjoy it. If you want a lightly entertaining film with spoken Italian, this is your ticket! It is a fast-paced highly-improbable war-time costume adventure movie set in Milan during the last days of the fascist regime with a contemporary music soundtrack. Dagli appunti del regista Renato de Maria: Robbing Mussolini è un film sul passato. È un film di rapina e una storia d’amore. Ha elementi di commedia, ma è anche ispirato dai fumetti. Attinge a molti generi e li mescola insieme. Fare questo film mi ha messo alla prova e ha sfidato tutto quello che avevo fatto fino ad ora. Mi è piaciuto farlo? Enormemente. È stato faticoso? Terribilmente. Ne è valsa la pena? Lo spero proprio.
From the Director Renato de Maria’s notes: Robbing Mussolini is a film about an earlier time. It’s a heist film and a love story. It has elements of comedy, yet it’s also inspired by comic books. It draws on many genres and mixes them together. Making this film happen put me to the test and challenged everything I’d done until now. Did I enjoy making it? Enormously. Was it tiring? Terribly. Was it worth it? I certainly hope so.

I first noticed her in the Italian TV Drama “Tutto può succedere,” the Italian version of the American series “Parenthood.” (Read a previous article about the Italian TV drama.) She also starred in L’incredibile storia dell’Isola delle Rose. She was awarded the David di Donatello for Best Supporting Actress. More recently, she has been starring in the Netflix TV drama “La Legge di Lidia Poët, which I recently reviewed. She acts, sings, composes, and was nominated for Best Original Song for the film Seventeen, which she wrote and performed.
