Le commedie “Screwball” sono state in giro per un lungo periodo. Conoscete il termine? Una “Screwball comedy” è un tipo di film di Hollywood che è diventato popolare durante la Grande Depressione americana. Sapete, il periodo degli anni ’30 quando le persone erano senza lavoro, il mercato era appena caduto e la gente cercava modi per evitare realtà e tirarsi su. Screwball in inglese significa pazzo o eccentrico. Questi tipi di film sono caratterizzati da trame dalla evasione di realtà e una protagonista femminile forte che domina il rapporto con il suo omologo attore maschile. Spesso sono film frenetici, ci sono battute argute, situazioni ridicole e trame che coinvolgono il corteggiamento e il matrimonio. Le battute tra i sessi sono un modo per comunicare la tensione sessuale.
Screwball comedies have been around for a long time. Are you familiar with the term? A Screwball comedy is a type of Hollywood film that became popular during the American Great Depression. You know, during the 1930’s when people were out of work, the stock market had just crashed, and people were looking for an escape from reality and something to cheer them up. Screwball in English means crazy or eccentric. These types of films are characterized by escapist plots and a strong female lead that dominates the relationship with her male actor counterpart. There is often fast-paced, witty banter, ridiculous situations, and plot lines involving courtship and marriage. The verbal sparring between sexes serves as a stand-in for sexual tension.
Un film che viene subito in mente di questo genere è “Accadde una notte” (“It Happened One Night”, 1934) Quando l’ho indagato, ho scoperto che infatti è stato citato come il primo Screwball commedia. Confesso che sono sempre stata appassionata di cinema degli anni ’30 e ‘40 fin da quando ero un’adolescente. In questo film “Accadde una notte” ci sono gli attori Clark Gable e Claudette Colbert. Chi può dimenticare la scena classica quando Colbert ferma il traffico, tirando su la gonna per mostrare la sua bellissima gamba.
A film that immediately to my mind in this genre is “It happened “One Night” (1934). When I looked up the film, I discovered it indeed is cited as being the first true screwball film. I confess I have always been a movie buff since I was a teenager. This particular film “It Happened One Night” features Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Who can forget the classic scene when Colbert literally stops traffic, by pulling up her skirt to flash a shapely gam.
Un’altra commedia classica è “L’impareggiabile Godfrey” (“My Man Godfrey”, 1936) con Carole Lombard e William Powell. Durante la Grande Depressione, Godfrey “Smith” Parker vive insieme ad altri uomini sfortunati in una discarica sul East River a New York. Una serata, una donna viziata, Cornelia Bullock gli offre cinque dollari per essere il suo “uomo dimenticato” per una caccia al tesoro.
Another classic comedy is “My Man Godfrey” which started with Carole Lombard and William Powell. During the Great Depression, Godfrey “Smith” Parker is living alongside other men down on their luck at a New York City dump on the East River. One night, spoiled socialite Cornelia Bullock offers him five dollars to be her “forgotten man” for a scavenger hunt.
Le origini delle commedie Screwball possono essere rintracciate agli spettacoli di Lysistrata di Aristophanes, “Molto rumore per nulla” e “Sogno di una notte di mezza estate” di Shakespeare. Verso la metà degli anni ’40 la commedia americana “Screwball” era praticamente aveva perso popolarità.
The origins of screwball comedies can be traced back to stage plays, such as “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes, Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. By the mid-1940s the American Screwball comedy had pretty much faded in popularity.
Ancora oggi però le viene reso omaggio nei film contemporanei. Lo scorso dicembre, questo tipo di commedie è emerso ancora una volta in “versione italiana” in una serie di mini-drammi ai telespettatori italiani nella seconda stagione di “Purché finisca bene 2” su Rai. (La serie originale è andata in onda nel 2014 con 5 film leggeri.)
Still now and then it is paid homage to in contemporary films. This past December, the screwball genre has surfaced again “Italian style” in a set of mini-dramas presented to Italian viewers during a three-week period in the second season of “Purché finisca bene 2”. (The original series aired back in 2014 with 5 light-hearted films.)
Se volete ridere e fare una fuga dalla realtà per un’ora o più guardate questi tre film compresi nella serie “Purché finisca bene”. Le trame di tutti questi film sono un po’ ridicole e improbabili. Comunque sono film leggeri e, nonostante inizi difficili, finiscono tutti bene. Forse tutti noi abbiamo bisogno di una risata e vogliamo vedere che la ragazza troverà il suo uomo. Abbiamo tutti bisogno di un lieto fine ogni tanto!
If you want to laugh and escape reality for an hour or so, check out these three films packaged together in the series “Purché finisca bene” (“As Long as it Ends Well”). The plots of all these films are a bit ridiculous and improbable. Never the less they are light and despite difficult beginnings, they all end well. Perhaps we all need a laugh and long to see the woman will get her man. We all need a happy ending now and then!
