Ciao belli! Ci sono cose nuove in corso presso la casa “Matta” in questo periodo di Natale. Una giovane ragazza di Lecce è arrivata e starà con me e la mia famiglia durante le vacanze natalizie! Si chiama Marta e ci siamo incontrate durante una delle mie vacanze di studio in Puglia lo scorso anno. Lei ha vent’anni e si è appena laureata. Sta qui con noi per fare un’esperienza di “cultural exchange” e per praticare il suo inglese. Questo è il suo primo viaggio in America. Finora il più lungo viaggio che ha fatto è stato a Roma lo scorso settembre. Fino ad adesso sembra che il viaggiare le piaccia. Tutto va benissimo! Sono molto fiera di lei e penso che abbia tanto coraggio per venire a vivere per un lungo periodo con una famiglia straniera (soprattutto la mia pazza famiglia) durante le vacanze natalizie!
Hi guys! There are new things going on at the “Matta” house this holiday season. A young girl from Lecce has arrived and will be staying with my family during the Christmas holidays! Her name is Marta and we met during one of my language workshop vacations in Puglia last year. She is twenty years only and has just graduated. She is here with for a cultural exchange experience and to practice here English. This is her first trip to America. The furthest away from her home in Puglia was a trip she made to Rome last September. So far traveling agrees with her! She is doing wonderfully and I am so proud of her. I think she has a lot of courage to come and live for an extended period of time with a foreign family (especially my crazy clan) during the holidays!
Siamo tutti molto felici di avere Marta qui con noi per condividere con lei i costumi e le tradizioni americani. Naturalmente facciamo uno scambio delle lingue e ci sono anche molte tradizioni italiane che stiamo condividiamo! Anzi una delle prime cose che abbiamo fatto insieme è stata allestire il nostro presepe. Da quando abbiamo ospitato la prima studentessa, Francesca di Locorotondo tre anni fa, io preparo un presepe con le statuette italiane.
We are all quite happy to have Marta here with us to share with her our American customs and traditions. Naturally, we are sharing languages as well as also sharing many Italian traditions. Indeed, one of the first things we did together was to assemble our family’s presepe together. Since we hosted our first Italian student, Francesca, from Locorotondo three years ago, I prepare a presepe using Italian figurines.
È stata proprio Francesca che mi ha prima mostrato come costruire l’ambientazione utilizzando carta speciale, piccoli sassi e muschio raccolti dal giardino, così come organizzare i personaggi in una scena interessante e creativa. È stata sempre lei che mi ha raccontato che in Italia non si mette il Gesù presepe prima della vigilia di Natale e che i Re Magi non entrano in scena fino al giorno dell’Epifania, il 6 gennaio, quando la Bibbia afferma che i Re magi finalmente arrivano a salutare Gesù e la sua famiglia nelle colline fuori di Betlemme.
It was Francesca of course who first showed me how to build a scene using special paper and small stones and moss collected from the garden, as well as how to arrange the little statues into a cozy scene. She also was the one who first told me that in Italy you don’t put the baby Jesus into the scene until Christmas Eve and that the Wise men aren’t included either until the day of Epiphany on January 6th when the Bible states the Wisemen finally arrived to greet Jesus and his family in hills outside of Bethlehem.
Ora, con il presepe fatto, siamo quasi pronti per Natale. Ci sarà un sacco di divertimento e festeggiamenti in tutta la casa “Matta” che non finiranno fino al 6 gennaio! Perché? Perché c’è Marta, e quest’anno sicuramente aspettiamo per mettere i Saggi nel Presepe il 6 gennaio e senz’altro festeggiamo la Befana, che arriverà il giorno dell’Epifania. In America di solito non si festeggia l’Epifania e la Befana…comunque grazie a Marta, quest’anno abbiamo un buon motivo per accogliere la “bella brutta” Befana! La Befana vien di notte, Con le scarpe tutte rotte, Col vestito da romana, Viva viva la Befana!
Now with the Presepe built we are almost ready for Christmas. There will be lots of fun and festivities around the Matta household this year that won’t finish until January 6! Why? Because Marta is here and this year we will place the wise men in the Presepe and also celebrate la Befana, the Italian good witch who arrives on Epiphany. In America we usually don’t celebrate la Befana…so I am happy that this year we have a good reason to welcome la “bella brutta” Befana! The Befana comes by night, with broken shoes, Roman dress, long live the Befana!
