Al piede del ponte si dice che Dante attendesse ogni giorno Beatrice, nella speranza di vedere il volto della donna che amava.Una volta, nel periodo medievale, era sede di macellai.È stato un luogo perfetto per ospitare i macellai il cui compito era quello di tagliare e sezionare gli animali. At the foot of the bridge, it is said Dante waited each day for Beatrice to pass by, hoping to see the face of the woman he loved. Also once upon a time, during medieval times, it was home to Florentine butchers. It was the perfect place to house the “macellai” whose task it was to slice and dice up pigs and cows. When the butchers were ready to dispose of the bones and carcasses, they simply dumped them into the river below. Such an easy clean-up solution.
Ma Cosimo, il granduca di Toscana, il marito di Eleonora de Medici (la donna con il favoloso vestito, dipinto spesso dall’artista Bronzino) decise di costruire una galleria privata sopra il ponte. Assunse Giorgio Vasari come architetto ed ora è conosciuto come il Corridoio Vasariano. Ma Cosimo aveva un naso sensibile e si stancò della puzza dei macellai.Decise di allontanare i macellai dal ponte e sostituirli con orafi e gioiellieri. Nella sua mente un miglioramento, così come u gruppo meno puzzolente.
But Cosimo, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, the husband of Eleonora de Medici (the woman with the fabulous gown, painted often by the artist Bronzino) decided to construct a private gallery over the bridge. He hired Giorgio Vasari as the architect and now it is known as the Vasari corridor. But, Cosimo it seems had a sensitive nose and grew tired of the stench of the butchers. He decided to boot the butchers from the bridge and replace them with goldsmiths and jewelers. In his mind an improvement—as well as a less odiferous group of tradesmen.
Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, questo ponte è stato l’unico non bombardato dai tedeschi. Si dice che sia stato un ordine speciale di Hitler stesso. Nel corso del 1960 è stato minacciato ancora una volta dall’acqua alta che salivano minacciando di fare esplodere le palificazioni. La tempesta non ha avuto pietà ed era pronta a rovesciare il ponte medievale che anche i nazisti erano stati troppo rispettosi per distruggere. Ma quando gli argini invece hanno ceduto, l’acqua è entrata in città e il ponte rimase in piedi.
During World War II, this bridge was the only bridge not bombed by Germans, rumored to be special order from Hitler itself. During the 1960’s it was threatened once again by the floodwaters that rose up threatening to explode the pilings. The storm had no mercy and was ready to topple the medieval bridge that even the Nazis had been too respectful to destroy. But when the banks gave way dumping its contents into the city instead the bridge remained standing.
Lo scorso dicembre il ponte era nella notizie di nuovo. È stato una parte di uno spettacolo di luci. Il ponte è stato ornato con belle immagini dell’arte.
Last December the bridge was in the news again. It was a part of the city’s light show display. The bridge was adorned with beautiful images of art.
Ma questa settimana il ponte era di nuovo nei giornali. Sembra che molto vicino al ponte, a causa della rottura di una tubazione sotterranea principale lungo l’Arno, si è aperta una voragine seppellendo decine di auto parcheggiate. Sindaco Dario Nardella ha sottolineato che l’inondazione sotterraneo era il risultato di uno squarcio in un tubo, una delle principali condutture d’acqua nel quartiere, e non di una perdita nelle rive dell’Arno.
But, this week the Ponte Vecchio was in the news once again. It seems very nearby due to an underground water main break along the Arno River a 200-yard-long sinkhole opened up burying dozens of parked cars. Mayor Dario Nardella stressed that the underground flooding was the result of a gash in a two-foot diameter pipe, one of the major water conduits in the neighborhood, and not a leak in the banks of the Arno.
Quindi, non c’è bisogno di panico. Il ponte non è caduto dentro il fiume! Meno male! A quanto pare il ponte continuerà a vivere un’altro giorno!
So no need to panic. The bridge didn’t take a dive into the brink. Thank goodness! Apparently, the bridge will live on to see another day!
