Italian Podcast: Vacanza Romana con tre amici – Lucrezia, Keith and Chiara

Ciao e bentornati al mio podcast “Tutti Matti per l’italiano”. Sono Melissa, la studentessa matta e sono appena tornata dall’Italia dove ho passato una vacanza favolosa.

I have just returned from a fantastic trip in Italy and just can’t seem to stop talking or writing about it. In this episode of Tutti Matti per l’Italiano I will be giving a brief overview of where I went in Italy and then I will be introducing you to three great friends that I had the good fortune of meeting during my long weekend in Rome. They are Keith Preble of Parola del Giorno and author of a new book “Il vero Italiano; your guide to speaking real Italian, Lucrezia Oddone of “Learn Italian with Lucrezia YouTube videos, and Claire who writes the blog: Runaway Day Dreamer. In this podcast, I’m going to be speaking entirely in Italiano! So buckle your seat belts and get ready for a full immersion podcast!

Quest’ultima vacanza ho cominciato da Roma dove ho passato quattro giorni nella città eterna visitando posti interessanti come Castel Sant’Angelo, Villa Borghese e dove ho fatto tante passeggiate nel centro storico e nel quartiere di Trastevere. Durante il lungo weekend ho mangiato veramente bene! A Roma non riesco mai a rifiutare un bel piatto di spaghetti alla Carbon-ara o un gustoso Cacio e Pepe, pietanze tipiche romane. Dopo alcuni giorni ho noleggiato una macchina e, lasciando Roma alle mie spalle, sono andata in Toscana, verso il piccolo paesino di San Quirico in Val d’Orcia, dove si può trovare pace e tranquillità, anche se le campane del borgo suonano ogni quarto d’ora!

Ciao and welcome back to my podcast “Tutti Matti per l”italiano”. I am Melissa the Studentessa Matta, and I have just returned from Italy where I had a fantastic vacation. This time I began in Rome where I spent four days in the Eternal City visiting interesting places like Castel Sant’Angelo, the Villa Borghese, and where I went on my walks through the historic city center and in an area called Trastevere. During the long weekend, I ate very well! When in Rome I can never refuse a lovely plate of spaghetti Carbonara o a tasty Cacio & Pepe, typical roman dishes. After a couple of days I rented a car and leaving Rome behind, I went to Tuscany with my sites set on the small town of San Quirico in Val d’Orcia, where you can find peace and tranquillity, even if the church bells ring every quarter-hour!

Dopo aver visitato la Toscana, sono andata in Umbria dove mi sono rilassata per una settimana nelle colline sopra Umbertide in un agriturismo fantastico chiamato “Casa Bruciata”. Durante il soggiorno nel verde cuore d’Italia, come viene chiamata l’Umbria, ho fatto tante escursioni in zona. Sono andata a Spello, Montefalco, Umbertide, Perugia e Gubbio. È bello pronunciare i nomi di queste città italiane, quasi divertente come andare a visitarle di persona. Per di più, un giorno ho attraversato gli Apennini, che fanno da limite tra Umbria e Marche, per esplorare la piccola Mercatello e la più grande Urbino, dove mi troverò il giugno prossimo per la prossima vacanza studio “Matta”.

After visiting Tuscany, I went to Umbria where I relaxed in a fantastic agriturismo called “Casa Bruciata”. There will be more about Casa Bruciata, run by my friend Gabriele, its’ history and how it got its’ strange name in a future podcast! During my stay in the green heart of Italy, as Umbria is sometimes called, I made many excursions about the area. I went to Spello, Montefalco, Umbertide, Perugia and Gubbio. It is lovely pronouncing all these Italian city names, almost as much fun as visiting them in person! It gets even better! One day I crossed over the Apennine mountains that form the border between Umbria and le Marche to investigate the small city of Mercatello and the bigger walled city of Urbino, where I will be next June for the next Matta Language Study vacation.

Quest’ultima vacanza è stata favolosa, ma non solo perché ho visitato tanti luoghi interessanti. Certo, mi sono goduta tante viste mozzafiato, guidando attraverso le pianure e i campi della Toscana o le colline e le montagne dell’Umbria. Ma, come sempre, sono le persone che incontro durante il viaggio, che rendono indimenticabili le mie vacanze.

The latest vacation was really lovely, but not only because I visited many interesting places. Certainly, I enjoyed breathtaking views driving over through the planes and the fields in Tuscany and through the hills and mountains of Umbria. But, as always the people who I meet during my travels are the reason my trips are so unforgettable.

Ho avuto molte opportunità di rivedere, chiacchierare e rinsaldare l’amicizia con tanti amici da Roma a Garda. Ho anche incontrato nuova gente. È stato proprio bello passare del tempo con Nadia Sparapani e Luisa Donati nelle Marche, le mie collaboratrici per la prossima vacanza studio vicino a Urbino nel 2015, e conoscerle meglio. Entrambe sono simpaticissime e ci divertiremo molto insieme l’anno prossimo. Vedrete!

I had the chance to see again, chat, and catchup up on old friendships with people from Rome to Garda. I also got to meet new people. It was really great to meet with Nadia Saparapani and Luisa Donai in Marche, my colleagues for the next Matta Study Vaction near Urbino in June 2015, and get to know them better. Both women are super great and we will have loads of fun together next year. Wait and see!

Per questa studentessa matta i giorni trascorsi a Roma sono stati meravigliosi perchè ho avuto l’opportunità d’incontrare tre blogger speciali conosciuti prima in internet, ma ormai considerati cari amici. Sono blogger di talento e condividiamo la passione per l’apprendimento delle lingue. Ho il massimo rispetto per quello che loro fanno ed è stato proprio bello passare un po’ di tempo con ciascuno di loro a Roma.

For this crazy student, the days spent in Rome were really wonderful because I had the chance to meet three special bloggers that I met through the internet but by now consider to be dear friends. They are a talented blogger and we share a passion for learning languages. I have the greatest respect for each of them and what they do and it was so nice to spend some time with each one of them in Rome.

Sono sicura che voi già conoscete Keith Preble da “Parola del Giorno”. Lui vive a Roma e sta facendo un Masters in Governo e Politica. Lui è l’autore non solo del blog ma anche dell’ e-book “Il Vero Italiano; your guide to speaking “real” Italian”. Keith ed io ci siamo conosciuti tanti anni fa nel mondo virtuale in un sito creato per conoscere gente che impara l’italiano. Il sito si chiama “Impariamo”. Questa vacanza, Keith ed io ci siamo incontrati in persona per la prima volta in piazza della Repubblica e poi abbiamo fatto una bella passeggiata fino al mercato di Traiano vicino al Colosseo. Certo, ci siamo fermati a prendere un gelato! Ecco Keith che vi saluta:

I am sure that you all already know Keith Preble da “Parola del Giorno”. He lives and studies in Rome. He is working on a Masters’s in Government and Politics. He is the author not only of the blog “Parola del Giorno” but also of the e-book “Il Vero Italiano; your guide to speaking “real” Italian”. Keith and I met several years ago in the virtual world of the internet through a site created for people learning Italian called “Impariamo”. During this Roman Holiday, Keith and I met in the Piazza Repubblica and then we took a stroll all the way to Trajan’s Market near the Colosseum. Of course we stopped to buy ice cream!

Un’altra amica che ho incontrato a Roma è Lucrezia Oddone, una persona davvero notevole. Lei è una giovane donna che sta studiando per essere una traduttrice all’università di Trieste. Quando non è a scuola, lei vive alla periferia di Roma con la sua familigia. Oltre agli studi, lei ha deciso di aprire un canale su Youtube “Learn Italian with Lucrezia”! che tratta dell’apprendimento della lingua italiana per gli stranieri. La sua energia e passione sono veramente lodevoli e in poco tempo ha raccolto un grande pubblico che aspetta i suoi video ogni lunedì! L’anno scorso siamo diventate amiche, scambiando messaggi e scrivendo guest post l’una per l’altra. Fortunatamente per me, Lucrezia era in zona durante la mia vacanza romana e così abbiamo fissato un appuntamento per prendere un caffè insieme. Abbiamo deciso di incontrarci sotto l’obelisco in Piazza del Popolo. Poi abbiamo camminato lungo Via del Corso dove abbiamo trovato un piccolo caffè con vista su piazza di Spagna. Non è stato un problema trovare Lucrezia nella folla in piazza del Popolo. Anche se portava le lenti e non i famosi occhiali che lei mette sempre nei suoi video, è stato facile riconoscerla! Lei è una bella ragazza, e l’ho trovata simpatica dal vivo tanto quanto on-line.

The next friend that I met in Rome is Lucrezia Oddone, a very noteworthy person. She is a young woman who is studying to be a translator at the University of Trieste. When she isn’t in school she lives in the Roman suburbs with her family. Beyond her studies, she decided to start up a Youtube channel called “Learn Italian with Lucrezia” that helps teach Italian to foreigners. Her energy and her passion are really remarkable and in just a short time she has a huge following, who wait for her videos to come out each Monday. Last year we became friends, exchanging messages and writing guest posts for each other. Fortunately for me, Lucrezia was in town during my Roman vacation and so we decided to set a coffee date. We decided to meet under the obelisk in Palazzo del Popolo. Then we walked down via del Corso where we found a small caffè with a view of Piazza di Spagna. It wasn’t a problem finding Lucrezia in the crowd in Piazza del Popolo. Even if she was wearing her contact lenses and not the famous glasses she often wears in her video it was easy to recognize her. She is a lovely girl and I found her to be as delightful in real life as she is online.

La terza amica che ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare a Roma è stata Chiara o, come potete riconoscerla dal suo nome in internet,  “Claire” di “Runaway Day Dreamer”. Claire, è anche una giovane donna, che ha una grande passione per le lingue. All’inizio dell’anno ho ricevuto un messaggio da Claire dove lei diceva che era stata ispirata da me ad aprire un blog in Inglese. Come il mio, il motivo  del suo blog, essenzialmente è per perfezionare il suo inglese e per aiutare gli altri con l’apprendimento dell’inglese. Leggendo la sua lettera mi ero molto commossa. Quando ho saputo che mi sarei trovata a Roma ad agosto, ho proprio voluto incontrare questa ragazza speciale, per conoscerla meglio e per parlare delle passioni che condividiamo. Ci siamo incontrate la domenica prima della mia partenza da Roma in un bar in piazza Navona. Dopo una bella chiaccherata abbiamo prolungato il nostro incontro camminando fino alla Chiesa di San Carlo alla Quattro Fontane. Alla chiesa siamo arrivate cinque minuti prima della chiusura, ma con abbastanza tempo per dare un’occhiata dentro una delle mie chiese barocche preferite; questa fu progettata da Francesco Borromini. Avendo fame a questo punto, siamo andate a mangiare una pizza insieme, sempre parlando di progetti e viaggi futuri. Chissà? Forse un giorno anche Claire verrà a trovarmi a San Francisco!

The third friend that I had the good fortune of meeting in Rome is Chiara or as you may know her plume d’nome on the internet “Claire” di “Runaway Day Dreamer”. Clair, like Lucrezia, is also a young girl who has a huge passion for languages. At the beginning of the year, I received a message from Claire saying that she was inspired by me to start a blog in English to practice her English and to help others learn English. Reading her letter I was quite moved. When I knew I would be in Rome in August it was very important to me to meet this special girl, get to know her better, and talk about our shared passions for languages. We met the Sunday before I left Rome in a bar in Piazza Navona. After a lovely chat we prolonged our time together by walking all the way to the church San Carlo alla Quattro Fontane. We arrived at the church five minutes before closing, but still with enough time to peek inside one of my favorite baroque churches designed by Francesco Borromini. At this point being hunger we went out for a pizza, always chatting away about future projects and traveling. Who knows? Perhaps one day Clair will come and visit me in San Francisco!

Grazie a tutti gli amici che hanno reso questa vacanza in Italia indimenticabile! Non vedo l’ora di tornare nel bel paese per incontrarli di nuovo e per conoscerne di nuovi.
