Novecento: Alessandro Baricco – unusual tale about piano player’s life aboard an ocean liner

A volte si hanno semplicemente troppe opzioni. La vita si presenta con troppe scelte. Si è sopraffatti dall’enormità del vivere: il mondo è troppo bello, il viaggio è troppo lungo, il profumo è troppo forte. A volte il mondo è una nave troppo grande per navigare.

Sometimes one just has too many options. Life presents too many choices. One is overwhelmed by the enormity of living. The world is too beautiful, the voyage too long, the perfume too strong. Sometimes the world is a ship too big to navigate.

Questo è il dilemma di Danny Boodman TD Lemon Novecento, il più grande pianista che abbia mai suonato sull’Oceano – il protagonista del monologo di Alessandro Baricco “Novecento”. Nato e abbandonato su un transatlantico piroscafo il Virginian, l’orfano viene trovato da Danny Boodman, un marinaio di colore che gli farà da padre fino all’età di otto anni, quando morirà in seguito a una ferita riportata durante una burrasca. Ma il ragazzino si rifiuta di lasciare la nave. Lui scompare per giorni e riappare solo quando la nave è già partita, dimostrando per la prima volta la sua virtù nel suonare il pianoforte.

This is the dilemma of Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon Novecento, the greatest pianist that ever played upon the sea – the protagonist in Alessandro Baricco’s monologue “Novecento”. Born and abandoned on a transatlantic ocean liner the Virginian, the orphaned baby is found by Danny Boodman, a seaman who takes him under his wing until the age of eight when he dies from an injury during a storm. But the small boy refuses to leave the ship. He disappears for days and reappears only when the ship has sailed again, demonstrating for the first time his virtuoso for playing the piano.

Novecento rimane sulla nave e si unisce all’orchestra della nave. Nel corso del tempo, a causa del suo talento fenomenale, diventa il beniamino dall’alta società della nave, esibendosi per milionari, belle donne e le persone provenienti da tutto il mondo. Il mondo viene da lui e come una spugna, assorbe tutte le informazioni di luoghi lontani, persone, profumi, gusti, desideri e passioni degli altri. Lui è contento di suonare i suoi magici brani musicali sospese tra il suo pianoforte e il mare, vivendo indirettamente attraverso gli altri.

Novecento remains on the ship and joins the ship’s orchestra. Over time, due to his phenomenal talent, becomes the darling of the ship’s high society, performing for millionaires, beautiful women, and people hailing from all over the world. The world comes to him and like a sponge, he absorbs information about faraway places, people, aromas, tastes, desires, and passions of others. He is content to play his magical musical pieces suspended between his piano and the sea, living vicariously through others.

Una volta Novecento tenta di sbarcare la nave per trovare una vita sulla terra ferma. Ma, si ferma a metà strada sulla tavola banda, bloccato dalla immensità di troppe scelte di una vita da vivere in un mondo più grande al di là della nave familiare. Si ritira di nuovo dentro la nave la sua casa natale, trovando sicurezza nella tastiera limitata del pianoforte su cui può creare infinite melodie. È nato a bordo del piroscafo e alla fine muore sulla nave, perché la vita sulla terra presenta troppe scelte per lui da sopportare.

Once Novecento attempts to disembark the ship, to lead a life on terra ferma. But, he stops himself mid-way upon the gangplank, halted by the immensity of too many choices of living life in a bigger world beyond his familiar ship. He retreats back into the ship his home since birth, finding security in the finite piano keyboard upon which he can create countless melodies. He was born on the ocean liner and he eventually dies on the ship, because life on land presents too many choices for him to endure.

Leggete Novecento per voi stessi. È una storia interessante, scritta in un modo insolito. Oltre ad essere facile da leggere per uno studente di italiano, è breve ed un ulteriore vantaggio è buona pratica per il congiuntivo. Secondo l’autore il testo può essere definito come una via di mezzo tra “una vera messa in scena e un racconto da leggere ad alta voce”. Giuseppe Tornatore ha realizzato la qualità teatrale del monologo e ha trasformato la storia di Baricco in un film intitolato “La Leggenda del Pianista sull’oceano”. Il film è stato nominato per una serie di premi in tutto il mondo, vincendo diversi premi per la sua colonna sonora di Ennio Morricone.

Read Novecento for yourselves. It is a delightful tale, written in a most unusual way. Aside from being an easy read for Italian students, it is short and an added benefit, it is good practice for those working on the subjunctive tense! According to the author, the story can be defined as a cross between “a staged play and a story that is meant to be read aloud.” Giuseppe Tornatore realized the theatrical quality of the monologue and turned Baricco’s work into a movie called “La Leggenda del Pianista sull’oceano”. It was Tornatore’s first movie made in English and it came out in 1998. The film was nominated for a variety of awards worldwide, winning several for its soundtrack, by Ennio Morricone.
