Le stelle cadenti hanno sempre risvegliato emozioni e leggende. Si dice anche che se si esprime un desiderio vedendo la stella che traccia una scia nel cielo scuro della notte, questo si avvererà. Stasera, il 10 agosto, si festeggia la notte di San Lorenzo e la notte delle stelle cadenti. È uno degli eventi naturali più attesi e ogni anno la notte di San Lorenzo riaccende la magia e il fascino del cosmo. Attira milioni di persone a trovare un posticino tranquillo al buio, a sdraiarsi sull’erba, per guardare verso il cielo nella speranza di abbracciare una stella cadente.

Shooting stars have always awakened emotions and inspired legends. It is also said that if you make a wish upon the trail of a falling star, your wish will come true. Tonight, August 10th, we celebrate la notte di San Lorenzo e le stelle cadenti – the Night of San Lorenzo and the falling stars. It is one of the most anticipated events of nature and every year the night of San Lorenzo revives the magic and our fascination with the cosmos. It entices millions of people to find a quiet place in the dark, lay down in the grass, and gaze up at the sky in the hope of catching a falling star.

Bob Marley diceva: Se esprimi un desiderio è perch´´ vedi cadere una stella, se vedi cadere una stella è perché guardi il cielo, e se guardi il cielo, è perché credi ancora in qualcosa.”

Bob Marley said: “If you make a wish, it is because you see a falling star, if you see a falling star it is because you are looking at the sky, and if you are looking at the sky, it is because you still believe in something.” 

La leggenda di San Lorenzo dice che Laurentius, diacono nella Roma imperiale, durante la persecuzione anti-cristiana voluta dall’imperatore Valeriano, rifiutò di consegnare alle autorità il tesoro della sua comunità religiosa. La punizione fu terribile: il 10 agosto del 258 d.C. fu legato ad una graticola ed arso vivo sui carboni incandescenti. La notte di San Lorenzo viene così da tempi immemori dedicata al martirio di San Lorenzo e si tramanda che le stelle cadenti siano le lacrime versate dal santo durante il suo supplizio.

The legend of San Lorenzo say that Laurentius, a deacon of the roman Empire, during the anti-Christian persecution was ordered by the emperor Valerian, because he refused to turn over the treasures of his religious community. The punishment was terrible: On August 258 ad Lorenzo was tied to a grate and burned alive on hot coals. Since then, August 10 the night of the falling stars has been dedicated to the martyrdom of San Lorenzo. It is said that the shooting stars are the tears shed by the saint during his ordeal.

Nella versione scientifica, forse meno poetica, ma che comunque suscita ancora  stupore, questo appuntamento magico che abbiamo con il cielo stellato stasera (il 10 agosto) è il risultato di una massa meteorite costituita dai residui della disintegrazione progressiva della cometa Swift-Tuttle. Le piccole particelle, scontrandosi a gran velocità con l’atmosfera terrestre, danno luogo a scie luminose di grandissimo effetto che sono più visibile a occhio nudo. 

In scientific language, perhaps less poetic, but still awe inspiring, this magic appointment that we have with a starry sky tonight – August 10th is indeed the work of a meteor mass consisting of residues from the progressive disintegration of the Swift-Tuttle comet. The small particles colliding at high speed with the Earth’s atmosphere, causes the showering light display making them more visible to the human eye.

La bellezza della notte di San Lorenzo e delle stelle cadenti è l’intreccio di scienza e leggenda, con desideri e speranze umani. Ci voltiamo al cielo per essere confortati e rinvigoriti di nuovo. Sogniamo. Ricordiamo il passato. Pensiamo al futuro. Noi siamo figli del mondo, persi per una notte nell’innocenza, nella magia e nello stupore dell’universo mentre, guardiamo insieme la bellezza delle stesse cadenti.
