Nelle Hawaii si può camminare con pesci – walk with fish!

Le mamme viaggiatrici torniamo questo mese per scrivere sul tema “camminare”. Visto che sono appena tornata dalle Hawaii, e sto ancora pensando alle isole, voglio raccontare una escursione che ci si può fare. Sembra incredibile ma sull’isola di Oahu si può proprio camminare con i pesci verso un piccolo isola chiamata “Chinaman’s Hat”.

Seeing as I have just returned from Hawaii, and I am still thinking about the islands I want to tell you about an excursion you can make there. It seems incredible but on the island of Oahu you can actually walk with the fish to a small island called Chinaman’s Hat.

Nelle Hawaii ci sono un’abbondanza di sentieri ideali per fare passeggiate, in cui siete benedetti di vedere meravigliose cascate, fori che soffiano acqua di mare nell’aria, ibischi di colore rosso sangue e uccelli con lunghe piume colorate. Qualche volta avrete la sensazione di essere entrati nella giungla del parco Jurassic. Però il cammino in particolare che voglio descrivervi è un percorso che si può trovare solo a bassa marea, e quando lo seguite, sembra che stiate camminando sopra l’acqua. Sto parlando del cammino che attraversa la barriera corallino, dal lato sopravvento di Oahu, a una piccola isola chiamata Mokolii o “Chinaman’s Hat” / “il cappello del uomo cinese”. L’isola è chiamata così perché ha la forma di un conico e assomiglia a un cappello di un contadino cinese.

In Hawaii, there are an abundance of trails perfect for walking and if you follow them you will see stunning waterfalls, blowholes that spew seawater high into the air, blood red hibiscus flowers, and birds with long colorful feathers. Sometime you will feel as if you have just stepped foot into the jungles of Jurassic Park. But, the particular walk which I would like to describe to you is a path that can be found only at low tide, and when you follow it, it seems that you are walking on the water. I’m talking about the path that crosses the coral reef, from the windward side of Oahu to a small island called Mokolii or “Chinaman’s Hat”. The island is called just that because it has a conical shape and looks like a Chinese peasant hat.

Questa piccola isola si trova a pochi metri dalla riva, nel Kuala Point State Park, che è accessibile dall’autostrada di “Re Kamehameha”, la strada principale che va in giro per l’isola di Oahu. Ci vuole solo una ventina di minuti per attraversare la barriera corallina e la passeggiata è perfetta e facile anche per i più piccoli. Ho visto anche i genitori a piedi che spingendo i loro piccoli davanti a loro in un zattera gonfiabili in gomma. Tuttavia, una
parola di consiglio da una che ha preso questa passeggiata. Quando si effettua il trekking, assicuratevi di indossare scarpe da tennis per evitare i rami di corallo ruvide e taglienti. È possibile ringraziarmi più tardi!

This tiny island is situated a few yards from shore, in the Kauala Point State Park, and is accessible from the King Kamehameha highway, the principal road that goes around the Island of Oahu. It takes only about twenty minutes to cross over the coral reef and the walk is perfect and easy even for small children. I have even seen parents walk the trail pushing their small ones ahead of them in rubber inflatables. However, a word of advise from one who has taken this walk. When you make this trek make sure to wear tennis shoes to avoid the rough and sharp coral branches. You can all thank me later!

All’inizio sembrerà strano lasciare la spiaggia alle spalle a lanciare a piede nella direzione dell’isola, sopratutto quando l’acqua del mare comincia a salire sopra le caviglie e il ginocchio! Ma non avete paura! L’acqua non viene mai molto più profondo dei fianchi e presto si abitua alla sensazione di “escursionismo” attraverso l’acqua lungo la barriera corallina con i pesci come guidi turistici. In realtà la barriera è la patria di molti pesci e l’abbondanza di vita marina. La prima volta che ho fatto questo percorso ero un po’ preoccupata perché ho sentito che ci potrebbero essere piccoli pesci martelli nell’acqua. Ma il nostro vicino da casa, che faceva anche guida quel giorno, mi ha detto di colpirli leggermente sul naso per farli andare via. Speravo solo di vedere i bambini e non le madri, perché so che una madre può essere molto protettiva e IO non volevo perdere le dita dei piedi!

At first it will seem strange to leave the beach behind and head off on foot in the direction of the island, especially when the sea water begins to rise above your ankles and past your knees. But fear not! The water never gets much deeper than your hips and you will soon get used to the sensation of “hiking” through the water with the sea creatures to guide you. In fact, the barrier is home to many fish and an abundance of marine life and the first time I did this journey I was a bit worried because I had heard I might see baby hammer head sharks in the water. We were told by our Hawaiian neighbor, who was also our guide that day, to just lightly hit them on their noses to make them go away. I just hoped to see the babies and not the mothers, because I know that a mother can be very protective and I for one did not want to lose my toes!

Una volta sull’isola si ha la possibilità di raggiungere a piedi la piccola spiaggia di fronte all’oceano lato dell’isola oppure si può salire le rocce di lava in alto per avere una bellissima vista sul lato sopravvento di Oahu. Dalla cima si può anche vedere la penisola che la gente di Hawaii chiama la tartaruga di Re Kamehameha. Secondo leggenda la tartaruga gigante dava la guardia a una grotta segreta che il re usava per raggiungere la vicina isola di Molokai.

Once on the island you have the option to walk to the small beach on the ocean facing side of the Chinaman’s Hat, or you can climb the lava rocks to the top to have a beautiful view of the windward side of Oahu. From the top you can also see the peninsula that the Hawaiians call “King Kamehameha’s Turtle”. According to legend the giant turtle guarded a secret grotto that lead to a tunnel that the King used to reach the neighboring island of Molokai.

Prima di visitare le isole delle Hawaii non avevo la minima idea che avrei riuscito a camminare proprio con i pesci. Ma in questo mondo ci sono sempre nuove cose da vedere e non si sa mai che cosa si scopre quando si mette un piede davanti all’altro!

Before visiting the Hawaiian islands I had no idea that I would walk with fish! But in this world there are always new things to see and you never know what you will discover when you put one foot in front of the other!
