Oggi vi porterò in un piccolo tour della baia di Monterey in California. Il weekend scorso sono andata in macchina da San Francisco a Monterey, un viaggio di quasi tre ore. Ecco quello che ho scoperto!
Today I’m taking you on a little trip to Monterey Bay in California. Last weekend I drove from San Francisco to Monterey, a car trip that takes about three hours. Here is what I discovered!

The California coastline is beautiful and you can enjoy the view of the ocean from Highway 1. The City of Monterey is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, on Central California’s Pacific coast.

Monterey is regulated by its proximity to the Pacific Ocean resulting in a cool-summer Mediterranean climate. Summers in Monterey are often cool and foggy. The cool water is what people are used to in Monterey Bay, usually, it is a chilly 55 degrees. So you might want to think about putting on a wet suit before you dive into the ocean in these parts.

Did you know that Monterey was the first capital of California? Monterey Bay is home to many species of animals…including many tourists…as well as a wide variety of marine mammals, including sea otters, harbor seals, and bottlenose dolphins; as well as being on the migratory path of Gray and Humpback Whales and a breeding site for elephant seals.
Lungo la costa si trovano anche delle orche, in particolare quando le balene grigie migrano, dato che cacciano le balene durante la loro migrazione verso nord. Anche molte specie di uccelli, pesci, squali, molluschi, come abaloni, calamari, e tartarughe marine vivono nella baia. Diverse varietà’ di alghe crescono nella baia, alcuni diventano alte come gli alberi, formando quello che è conosciuto come una foresta di “kelp”.
Killer whales are also found along the coast, especially when Gray whales migrate, as they hunt the whales during their migration north. Many species of fish, sharks, mollusks such as abalone and squid, birds, and sea turtles also live in the bay. Several varieties of kelp grow in the bay, some becoming as tall as trees, forming what is known as a kelp forest.
Monterey è storicamente anche nota per la sua industria conserviera che è stata avviata nel 1920 ed è il luogo dove è stato ambientato il romanzo di John Steinbeck “Cannery Row”. Monterey is also well known for its canning industry that was started in the 1920s and was the setting of John Steinbeck’s novel “Cannery Row”. Today you can still see along the main street the now-defunct sardine canning factories. The canneries failed after the collapse of the fishing industry in Monterey Bay in the mid-1950s, which resulted from a combination of factors, including unfavorable oceanic conditions, over-fishing, and competition from other markets in other cities.
Adesso Monterey è un’attrazione turistica e ospita il famoso Monterey Bay Aquarium situato all’estremità nord di Cannery Row. Li’ è possibile stare molto vicino ai pesci che vivono nella baia, come le meduse, e si possono vedere i sommozzatori che nutrono i pesci in una vasca gigante di acqua di mare; si possono anche ammirare foreste tremende di Kelp.
Now Monterey is a tourist attraction and is home to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium located at the north end of Cannery Row where you can get up close and personal with the fish that live in the Bay, and view the tremendous Kelp forests.
