Rossella di Bardolino parla dei mercatini di Natale – Rossella from Bardolino talks about Christmas Markets in Italy

In un podcast recente che Cher Hale ed io abbiamo registrato sulle tradizioni natalizie, abbiamo avuto un ospite speciale di Bardolino. Bardolino si trova vicino a Garda nel nord Italia. La nostra ospite si chiama Rossella e lei parla in un messaggio registrato dei mercatini di Natale nella sua zona.

In a recent podcast that Cher Hale and I recorded on Italian Christmas traditions, we had a special guest from Bardolino. Bardolino is next door to Garda in northern Italy. Our guest’s name is Rossella and in a recorded message she speaks about the Christmas markets in her area.

Ciao a tutti! Sono Rossella, un’amica di Melissa Muldoon.

Hi everybody! I am Rossella, a friend of Melissa Muldoon.

Melissa e la sua amica Cher mi hanno chiesto di parlarvi dei vari mercatini di Natale che vengono allestiti durante il periodo dell’Avvento qui dove vivo io sul lago di Garda.

Melissa and her friend Cher asked me to talk to you about the different Christmas markets that are set up during the time of Advent here where I live in Lago di Garda.

Ormai questa è diventata una tradizione consolidata, un appuntamento fisso sia per la gente del posto che per i turisti.

By now this has become an established tradition, a “standing date” for the people who live in this area and for the tourists.

Qui nella piccola cittadina di Garda, sulla sponda veronese del lago, l’allestimento del mercatino viene sponsorizzato con il nome di “Natale fra gli ulivi”;  a Bardolino , il paese vicino,  viene invece chiamato “Dal sei al sei” in riferimento alle date di apertura e chiusura del mercatino. Ma vediamo nel dettaglio che cosa hanno di particolare questi mercatini per attirare sempre così tanta gente!

Here in the small town of Garda, on the shores of the Veronese Lake, the setting up of the markets is a sponsored event and has the name of “Christmas between the olive trees”; in Bardolino, the town where I live, it is called instead “From the six to the six” in reference to the date the market opens and closes. Let’s see what some of these markets have to attract so many people!

Innanzi tutto quello che li caratterizza sono  le  piccole casette di legno allineate lungo percorsi pedonali fra le vie del paese. Se si ha la fortuna di visitare questi mercatini alla sera, l’atmosfera è ancora più suggestiva  per la luce soffusa delle luminarie che provengono dalle casette!

First of all the thing that characters them are the small wooden houses that are set up along the sidewalks between the streets in the town. If you are lucky to visit these markets at night the atmosphere is even more striking because of the lights soft glow of lights coming from the houses.

Dagli stand arrivano profumi di  cannella e di spezie! Vengono venduti prodotti di ogni sorta e tipo come specialità culinarie del territorio, dolci tipici natalizi, salumi e affettati, olio e formaggi di malga, vin brulè e distillati, ma anche oggetti di artigianato locale, pantofole di lana cotta, pigotte in pannolenci o feltro e per chi non lo sapesse le pigotte sono bambole di pezza, candele profumate, decori per l’albero di Natale, statuine per il presepe e molto altro ancora.

From the stands come the aromas of cinnamon and spices! All kinds of things are sold like special foods of the area, typical Christmas sweets, meats and cold cuts, oil, cheese from Malga, vin brulè and spirits. There are also local crafts for sale like boiled wool slippers, “pigotte in pannolenci” or “pigotte in feltro”. For those who don’t know “pigotte” are little rag dolls. There are scented candles, decorations for the Christmas tree, figurines for the nativity scene, and much much more.

A Bardolino per l’occasione viene allestita nella piazza adiacente al porto una grande pista di pattinaggio sul ghiaccio! A Riva del Garda invece un appuntamento fisso per i bambini è la casa di Babbo Natale all’interno della Rocca. Non possiamo non includere Malcesine tra gli eventi natalizi da ricordare…sì perchè proprio qui, il panoramico castello scaligero si trasforma in un castello magico degli elfi dove i  i più piccoli potranno divertirsi con gli spettacoli di clown, giocolieri, maghi, scultori di palloncini e burattinai.

In Bardolino for the occasion, they set up in the piazza adjacent to the harbor a large skating rink! In Riva del Garda on the other hand there is a not-to-be-missed date with Santa Claus inside the fortress. We can’t forget to include Malcesine in all these holiday events…yes because in Malcesine the scenic Scaligero Castle is transformed into a magic elfin castle where the little ones can enjoy themselves with clown shows, jugglers, magicians, balloon sculptors, and puppeteers.
