Sabato scorso ho avuto il piacere di incontrare Sophia Loren!

I had the pleasure of meeting Sophia Loren!

Dopo tutto stiamo parlando di una delle icone del cinema italiano! La protagonista d’Italia! Questa pazza donna…IO…ho baciato la Loren su entrambe le guance, nel modo giusto e le ho parlato in italiano!

After all, we are talking about one of Italy’s film icons! The leading lady of Italia! This crazy girl… ME…actually kissed Miss Loren on both cheeks, in the proper Italian fashion, and spoke to her in Italian!

Incontrare Sophia Loren di persona è stato per me un onore. Sophia è elegante e bella ora come nell’ 81, quando ha recitato con Marcello, Cary e Clark! Alta e raffinata, si comporta con dignità.

Meeting Sophia Loren in person was quite an honor. Sophia is as elegant and beautiful now at 81 as she was when she acted with Marcello, Cary, and Clark! Tall and refined, she carries herself with grace and dignity.

Un sogno diventa realtà

Per me è stato un sogno sedermi tra il pubblico (nella seconda fila molto vicino al palco!) per ascoltarla durante il suo spettacolo “An Evening with Sophia!” presso il Venetian Hotel di Las Vegas. Sono contenta di scoprire che questa diva in realtà è ironica, timida e estremamente divertente. Ha parlato al pubblico in inglese, ma spesso è ricorsa all’ italiano, ammettendo con un bel sorriso, “Mi piace parlare italiano!” Qualche volta ha chiesto aiuto a noi per la traduzione di una parola! Qualche volta ha chiesto aiuto da noi per una traduzione di una parola! Lei mi ha fatto sentire ben accolta come se fossi uno dei suoi amici speciali.

It was a dream come true to sit in the audience (in the second row, I might add, very close to the stage) and listen to her during her one-woman show “An Evening with Sophia!” at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I was pleased to discover that this film diva is quite self-deprecating, shy, and extremely funny. She spoke to the audience in English but frequently resorted to Italian, admitting with a smile, “I like to speak Italian!” Often she would look to us in the audience to help her with a translation of a word. She made me feel warm and welcomed as if I were one of her well-loved friends.

Sophia told many personal stories about her life

Durante lo show, Sophia ha raccontato ricordi personali e storie sulla sua vita e la sua carriera. Sono stati anche mostrati diversi spezzoni di video sui grandi monitor. Io invece di guardare i video, che ho visto un centinaio di volte prima, mi divertivo a guardare Sophia guardare se stessa sullo schermo. È stato meraviglioso vedere le sue espressioni e quando apparve Marcello sullo schermo, il suo sorriso era raggiante e ancora ridacchiava ad alcune delle sue battute!

During her time on stage, Sophia recalled personal memories and stories about her life and acting career. Several times film clips of her movies were shown. Instead of watching the videos, which I’ve seen a hundred times before, I delighted in watching Sophia watching herself on screen. It was wonderful to see her facial expressions, and when Marcello came onto the screen, she just beamed and still chuckled to herself at some of his lines!

Sophia ha parlato di tante cose. Conoscevo già alcune delle storie dopo aver letto la sua autobiografia, “Ieri, Oggi e Domani”. Ha anche parlato di Cary Grant. Lui è stato un grande amico fino alla fine. Sophia ha aggiunto che il motivo per cui ha fatto questo “One Woman Show” è a causa sua. È stata una sua idea, anni fa, per conoscere il suo pubblico. Cary pensava che sarebbe stata brava a farlo. Lei invece era sempre troppo timida per farlo bene. Lei è molto critica di se stessa e più di una volta ci ha detto, “Penso troppo! Ho bisogno di dire a me stessa: Zitta Sophia! Sii saggio e fallo!” Sono d’accordo con Cary, ha fatto un ottimo lavoro!

Sophia talked of so many things. I was already familiar with many of the stories after having read her autobiography, “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” She also talked of Cary Grant. He was a wonderful friend until the very end. She said the reason for doing this one-woman show was because of him. He gave her the idea years ago to connect with the public. Cary thought she would be good at it. On the other hand, she always thought she’d be too shy to do it well. She is very critical of herself, and several times she said to us, “I overthink things too much! I need to tell myself: Shut up, Sophia. Be wise and just do it!” I agree with Cary; she did an excellent job!

Dopo lo spettacolo, un piccolo gruppo di persone è stato invitato ad un ricevimento privato, dove sono stati serviti prosecco e del vino. Sophia si è unita a noi dopo pochi minuti. Era seduta a ricevere tutti e ci è stata concessa un’opportunità di fare una fotografia professionale. Quando venne il mio turno, mi sono presentata, l’ho baciata e le ho detto in italiano che uno dei miei sogno è diventato realtà! Le ho anche consegnato un piccolo dono e le ho raccontato che ho appena finito di scrivere un romanzo intitolato “Dreaming Sophia” che è stato ispirato da lei.

After the show, a small group was invited to attend a private reception where prosecco and wine were served. Sophia joined us after a few minutes. She was seated to receive everyone, and we were all granted a professional photo opportunity. When my turn came, I introduced myself, kissed her I told her in Italian that meeting her was a dream had come true! I also handed her a small gift and told her about the novel I have just completed called “Dreaming Sophia” that she and her courage partially inspired.

The book is very much about turning fantasies into reality. So, imagine my delight and the goosebumps I had when Sophia looked out at me during her show and said, “I believe in dreams. Dreams become a reality.”
