Ho iniziato a guardare I Medici su Rai 1. Ho visto quattro delle otto puntate, e sono già rimasta molto entusiasta della serie. È fantastica. La storia ci riporta al consolidamento del potere mediceo, a partire da Giovanni de’ Medici, il bisnonno di Lorenzo de’ Medici, detto “il Magnifico”. Siamo nel tardo medioevo—i primi anni del 1400— dopo che la metà della popolazione di Firenze fu spazzata dalla peste e prima che il Duomo di Firenze avesse una cupola. Infatti, parte del fascino di questo film per me è quello di vedere Firenze in quel periodo.

I’ve started to watch I Medici on Rai 1. I’ve seen four of the eight-part series, and I’m hooked! It is wonderful! The story takes us back to the consolidation of Medici power by Giovanni de’ Medici the great, great grandfather of Lorenzo de’ Medici – called “Il Magnifico”. We are in the late medieval period—the early 1400’s—after half the population of Florence has been wiped away by the plague and before Florence’s Cathedral had a dome. In fact, part of the charm of this film for me is to see the incredible reconstructions of what Florence must have looked like at this time in history.

I Medici sono stati i protagonisti della storia fiorentina dal 15° al 18° secolo, soprattutto nel periodo del rinascimento. È una famiglia che, sebbene provenisse dal nulla, costruí una fortuna con l’attività bancaria, riuscí a governare Firenze con intrighi politici e alla fine divenne una della più potenti dinastie d’Europa. La famiglia ha prodotto: diversi cardinali, due Papi, due regine di Francia e sette granduchi di Toscana.

The Medicis have been the protagonists of Florentine history from the 15th to the early 18th century, especially in the period of the Renaissance. They are a family that seems to have come out of nowhere, building a fortune through banking activity, rising to become rulers of Florence through various political intrigues to ultimately become one of the most powerful dynasties in Europe. In the Medici family tree, there were countless Cardinals, two Popes, two Queens of France, and seven Grand Dukes of Tuscany.

I Medici sono ricordati come i piu’ grandi collezionisti d’arte della storia e come coloro che diedero vita al Rinascimento fiorentino: tra i tanti artisti che lavorarono per la famiglia, attraverso le generazioni, ci sono Filippo Brunelleschi, Donatello, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffaello, Giorgio Vasari e Benvenuto Cellini.

The Medici are remembered as the greatest art collectors in history, who ignited the Florentine Renaissance: among the countless artists working for the family, across the generations, are the names of Filippo Brunelleschi, Donatello, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Giorgio Vasari, and Benvenuto Cellini.

Giovanni de’ Medici, interpretato da Dustin Hoffman, è il patriarca della illustre e potente famiglia di Firenze. Il giorno dopo la sua morte improvvisa e misteriosa, suo figlio Cosimo (interpretato da Richard Madden) prende il suo posto come erede designato nell’impresa bancaria di famiglia e nella Signoria, l’assemblea politica di Firenze. La trama si infittisce quando Cosimo sospetta che i nemici della famiglia, i Pazzi e gli Albizzi, siano coinvolti nella morte di suo padre; cosi’ inizia un indagine.

Giovanni de’ Medici, played by Dustin Hoffman, is the patriarch of the illustrious and powerful Florentine family. The day after his sudden and mysterious death, his son Cosimo (played by Richard Madden) takes his place as a designated heir and leader of the family’s banking enterprise and in the Signoria, Florence’s guiding political assembly. The plot thickens when Cosimo suspects enemies of the family, the Pazzi and Albizzi are involved in the death of his father; thus he begins an investigation.

La storia dalla Rai è raccontata in modo interessante, facendo spesso un flashforward, cioè un salto all’indietro, quando Giovanni, il padre, e’ ancora in vita. In questo modo, vediamo un forte contrasto tra il personaggio di Cosimo in gioventu’ e quello di lui come adulto, che si e’ evoluto fino a diventare l’uomo d’affari saggio, sovrano della sua famiglia e di Firenze.

The story produced by Rai TV is told in an interesting way, frequently jumping between present and past events, when Giovanni, the father was still alive. In this way, we see a strong contrast between the character of Cosimo in his youth and as an adult and witness the evolution over time of how he becomes the sage businessman, ruler of his family, and Florence.

Infatti, Cosimo inizia rifiutando gli affari di famiglia per intraprendere la carriera di artista. A Roma, incontra Donatello e si innamora dell’arte classica e dell’architettura. Sogna di completare la cupola sopra il Duomo di Firenze. Ma, non è quello il suo destino. Invece, è lui a finanziare il completamento della cattedrale e la costruzione della cupola. È lui che assume Brunelleschi, l’architetto genio che trova la soluzione per costruire la più grande cupola autoportante dopo il Pantheon.

Indeed, Cosimo starts out early in life rejecting the family business wanting to pursue a career as an artist. In Rome, he meets Donatello and becomes enamored with classical art and architecture. He dreams of completing the cupola over the Duomo in Florence himself. But, it is not to be his legacy. Instead, he is the one to finance the completion of the cathedral and the building of the cupola. He is the one who hires Brunelleschi, the genius architect who finds the solution of how to build the largest freestanding dome since antiquity.

Mi piace molto questa nuova serie. Le scene e i costumi sono davvero belli. Il cast e la troupe sono splendidi e sono costituiti da artisti internazionali, inglesi, americani e italiani. È divertente vedere questi attori dar vita ad importanti personaggi storici. Ricordate pero’ che questa è una storia romanzata, così ci sono licenze poetiche e ci sono alcune inesattezze storiche.

I am enjoying this new film. The sets and costumes are delightful. The cast and crew are also splendid made up of international artists, English, American, and Italian. It is fun to see them breathe new life into these important historical characters. But also remember this is fictionalized history, so creative license is taken and there are some historical inaccuracies.

E’ comunque molto divertente e sono particolarmente lieta di vedere rappresentato il personaggio di Filippo Brunelleschi che è un personaggio molto importante nel mio nuovo romanzo “Dreaming Sophia”!

But, it is still lots of fun and I am particularly pleased that Filippo Brunelleschi is represented as he is also an important character in my new book Dreaming Sophia!

Anche i fiorentini vengono dipinti come sognatori. Hanno costruito un enorme cattedrale pur non avendo idea di come completare l’opera. Sentivano però che un giorno  (300 anni dopo!) qualcuno avrebbe avuto l’intelligenza e la tecnologia per finire il lavoro, e per trasformare in realta’ il sogno fiorentina!

The Florentines are also portrayed as dreamers. They built an enormous cathedral hundreds of years before they had any idea how to top it off. But they sincerely believed that one day (even if it took 300 years!) someone would come along with the intelligence and technology to finish the job, and transform into reality the Florentine dream!
