Ho appena finito di guardare la terza stagione di Medici — Masters of Florence che è ora disponibile su Netflix.
I just finished up watching the third season of The Medici — Masters of Florence that is now available on Netflix.

Scherzi a parte, ho trovato questa serie molto interessante, anche se non completamente accurata dal punto di vista storico. Consente di rivivere il periodo, di vedere i costumi e le persone dando al tutto una bellezza sorprendente. E anche se Lorenzo è morto nel 1492, l’anno in cui Colombo salpò per l’oceano blu, riuscì a lasciare un bel retaggio. Aveva una mente acuta, era abile con le strategie e giochi potere politico, ha contribuito a presentare Firenze ad artisti come Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo e ha fatto prosperare le idee umanistiche.
All kidding aside, I found this series to be entirely delightful, if not completely historically accurate. It brings to life the period, the costumes, and the people with astonishing beauty. And although Lorenzo does die in 1492 the year Columbus sailed the ocean blue—he managed to leave quite a legacy. He had a sharp mind for strategies and political power plays, as well as helped introduced Florence to artists such as Botticelli, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and encouraged humanist ideas to flourish.
Le scene, i set e i costumi sono bellissimi, un vero piacere per gli appassionati di storia o per gli amanti di tutte le cose italiane.
The scenes, sets, and costumes are stunning — eye-candy for those who are history buffs or just lovers of all things Italian.
La terza stagione riprende immediatamente dal punto in cui la seconda è stata interrotta: Giuliano, il fratello di Lorenzo, è stato assassinato nel Duomo la domenica di Pasqua, pugnalato undici volte dai fratelli Pazzi. Questo incidente trasforma Lorenzo da un sognatore a un realista spinto a rimodellare Firenze secondo il suo piano. Di consequenza, Lorenzo si allontana da Dio, e questo è un grosso problema alla fine del XV secolo. Lorenzo intende prendere il controllo della sua città e farsi incoronare Principe d’Europa. Certo, questo non sta bene al papa. La tensione tra Firenze e lo Stato Pontificio è ai massimi storici. La situazione peggiora a causa di Girolamo Riario, nipote del papa: si tratta del perfetto avversario, la cui unica missione nella vita è mettere in ginocchio i Medici.
The third season picks up immediately where the second left off — Guiliano, Lorenzo’s brother, has been murdered in the Duomo on Easter Sunday stabbed eleven times by the Pazzi brothers. This incident changes Lorenzo from being a dreamer to a realist and one driven to reshape Florence according to his plan. As a result, he turns away from God—a big deal in the late 1400s—inorder to take control of his city and crown himself Prince of Europe. Of course, this doesn’t sit well with the Pope. Friction between Florence and the Papal States is at an all-time high. It is further escalated by Girolamo Riario, the Pope’s nephew—the perfect sinister adversary, whose only mission in life is to bring the Medici to their knees.
In questa stagione, ci viene anche presentato Girolamo Savonarola, il frate domenicano fanatico che prese il controllo di Firenze. Savonarola denunciava la corruzione della Chiesa e il governo dispotico di Firenze (riferendosi a Lorenzo), e chiedeva la distruzione dell’arte e della cultura secolari. Poiché ha pestato i piedi dei Medici, divenne subito un nemico. Ma questo è solo un assaggio di ciò che gli succederà dopo. Le cose infatti non vanno bene per lui, e alla fine i fiorentini lo impiccano. Quindi, ho pensato che il ruolo di Savonarola, le sue ambizioni e il suo fanatismo in questa serie fossero un po’ sottovalutate.
In this season, we are also are introduced to Girolamo Savonarola, the fanatic Dominican friar who took control of Florence. He denounced clerical corruption, despotic rule (aka Lorenzo), and called for the destruction of secular art and culture. He really stepped on the toes of the Medici and quickly became a foe. But, we are only left with a taste of things to come for this poor guy. Things don’t turn out for him in the end, and the Florentines eventually hang him. So, I thought the portrayal of Savonarola and his ambitions and fanaticism in this series was a bit underplayed.
I personaggi di Lorenzo e sua moglie Clarice, pur essendo molto giovani, mostrano una nuova maturità nella terza stagione. Il loro legame affettivo, che nel corso del tempo si era approfondito, adesso è ridotto all’osso a causa della mancanza di interesse di Lorenzo nei confronti dei suoi figli e della profonda devozione di Clarice a Dio e alla famiglia. Mentre Clarice tenta di coccolare i suoi figli, Lorenzo li usa come pezzi degli scacchi nel suo tentativo di prendere il potere sulla penisola italiana. Lorenzo manda i suoi figli a Roma per farli diventare cardinali, e questo in una lunga partita per impadronirsi dello Stato Pontificio. Lorenzo inoltre baratta la sua figlia preferita, Maddalena, organizzandole un matrimonio con il figlio illegittimo del papa, e questo quando lei era molto giovane.
The characters of Lorenzo and his wife Clarice, while still very young, show a new maturity in the third season. Their affections that have deepened over time are now stretched thin with Lorenzo’s lack of piety and interest in his sons and the elevation of Clarice’s devotion to God and family. While Clarice attempts to coddle her children, Lorenzo uses them like chess pieces in his attempt to control power on the Italian peninsula. He sends his sons to Rome to become cardinals in a long-game play to control the Papal State and barters off his favorite daughter Maddalena into a less-than-ideal marriage at a very young age with the Pope’s illegitimate son.
Un personaggio interessante che appare nella terza stagione è quello di Caterina Sforza. È la moglie di Riario. Non è solo un’altra bella faccia rinascimentale, è anche una forza da non sottovalutare. Fu fatta sposare all’età di dieci anni con il violento marito, Riario, e sopravvisse a più nemici. Ha persino combattuto con i Borgia e ha conosciuto i segreti di tutti a Roma. Questo offre una svolta sorprendente per Lorenzo e Firenze.
An interesting character that appears in Season three is that of Caterina Sforza. She is the wife of Riario. Seemingly just another pretty Renaissance face—but in reality, she was a force to be reckoned with. Married at the age of 10 to her abusive husband Riario, She survived multiple foes. She even did battle with the Borgias and knew everyone’s secrets in Rome. This plays out well in a surprising twist for Lorenzo and Florence.
Per adattarla alla narrazione creativa, la cronologia degli eventi è stata leggermente cambiata. Comunque, mi va bene anche questo, visto che anch’io sono una scrittrice che inventa storie, usando fatti storici come trampolino di lancio per creare belle narrazioni.
To suit creative story-telling, the time-line of events is a little skewed. Still, I’m okay with that being a writer and inventor of stories myself, using historical facts as a springboard to create a good tale.
Nella terza stagione, Michelangelo si presenta come un ragazzo nel giardino di artisti di Lorenzo a San Marco.L’unica cosa su cui insisto è che secondo me avrebbero potuto fare un lavoro migliore nel mostrare quanto Lorenzo è cambiato e ha contribuito allo sviluppo della scena artistica a Firenze. Botticelli è un personaggio ricorrente in tutte le stagioni, ma il rapporto di Michelangelo è stato notevolmente minimizzato. Nella terza stagione, si presenta come un ragazzo nel giardino di artisti di Lorenzo a San Marco.
My only quibble with the show is that it could have done a better job of showing how much Lorenzo changed and contributed to the development of the art scene in Florence. Botticelli is a reoccurring character throughout the entire season, but the relationship of Michelangelo was significantly downplayed. In the third season, he shows up as a young boy in Lorenzo’s garden of artists in San Marco.
In verità Michelangelo fu riconosciuto da Lorenzo molto prima. Fu educato insieme ai figli di Lorenzo e trascorse i suoi anni formativi presso la famiglia dei Medici: aveva persino una stanza nel palazzo. Lo scultore amava così tanto Lorenzo che gli scolpì la tomba: si trova nella chiesa di San Lorenzo. La miniserie mostra Lorenzo che dà consigli a Michelangelo sulla statua del fauno… la cosa è solo raccontata un po’ troppo tardi.
In truth, Michelangelo was recognized by Lorenzo at a much earlier age. He was educated along with Lorenzo’s sons and spent his formative years in the bosom of the Medici family — he even had a room in the Medici palace. The sculptor loved Lorenzo so much he carved Lorenzo’s tomb, which is located in San Lorenzo church. The story retold in the mini-series of Lorenzo giving Michelangelo advice regarding the faun statue is accurate… it is just told a little too late in the timeline of things.
Tutto sommato, una serie molto soddisfacente. Si può anche guardare tutto in italiano su Netflix.
