Durante il mese scorso ogni settimana ho pubblicato una parola o un’espressione combinato con un’immagine sulla pagina di Facebook di Studentessa Matta. Queste sono parole casuali che mi sono imbattuto durante la lettura o che ho sentito nei film che ho trovato utile e degno di essere evidenziato.
Last month, every week I posted a word or an expression combined with an image on the Studentessa Matta Facebook page. These are random words that I came across while reading or that I heard in movies that I found useful and worth highlighting.

Babbo Natale
Babbo Natale è quello che gli italiani chiamano “Santa Claus.”
“Babbo” comes from the Tuscan dialect and means “daddy.”
Babbo Natale è la risposta dell’Italia all’uomo col vestito rosso. Sapevate che l’originale San Nicola è il santo patrono di Bari e si dice che sia sepolto lì nella Basilica di San Nicola. Si dice anche che le reliquie che risiedono con lui abbiano poteri di guarigione soprannaturali
Babbo Natale is Italy’s answer to the man in the red suit. Did you know the original Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of Bari and is said to be buried there in the Basilica San Nicola. It’s also claimed the relics residing with him have supernatural healing powers.

Il Folletto / I Folletti
I folletti di Natale sono le piccole creature che vivono al Polo Nord con Babbo Natale. Sono i suoi aiutanti più fidati! Queste creature che possono essere vestite di verde o di rosso, invase al loro gusto personale, ed hanno lunghe orecchie appuntite. Si occupano di costruire i giocattoli nel laboratorio di Babbo Natale e si prendono cura delle renne.
Christmas Elves are the little creatures who live at the North Pole with Santa. They are his most trusted helpers! These creatures can be dressed in green or red, invaded to their taste, and have long pointed ears. They build toys in Santa’s workshop and take care of reindeer.
Bastoncini di Zucchero
I bastoncini di zucchero sono un tipo di caramella dura e allungata, dalla forma di bastone. Sono tradizionalmente costituiti da due fasce intrecciate di colore bianco e rosso, al sapore di menta o cannella.
Candy canes are a type of hard, elongated candy with a stick shape. They traditionally consist of two interlaced bands of white and red color, with the taste of mint or cinnamon.
Cappello di Babbo Natale
Il cappello di Babbo Natale è pesante, rosso rifinito in pelliccia per proteggersi dal freddo.
LEARN the CORRECT Italian vowel and double consonant sounds. Incorrect pronunciation can change the meaning of a word.
To pronounce double consonants correctly, you must hold the repeated letter a beat longer. Really hit it and hold it!
Cappello = hat
Cappelli = hats
Capello = a single hair
Capelli = hair
Other words to watch out for:
Palla = ball / Pala = shovel
Caro = expensive / Carro = wagon
Sera = evening / Serra = greenhouse
Penna = Pen / Penne = pens / Pena = suffering / pene = a man’s private part LOL!!!
So watch out! Instead of asking for a bunch of pens you could be asking for more than you bargained for!
P.S. The only way to learn how to pronounce and write double sounds correctly is to read a lot and listen to films and audiobooks so that you can associate a sound with the way it’s spelled naturally.

Incartare un regalo significa = wrap a present
Ecco le istruzioni e per incartare un pacco speciale!
Un regalo ben incartato dimostra il tuo talento e la cura dedicata nel farlo . Ecco le istruzioni per piegare la carta e sorprendere la persona che lo riceverà. Sistema il regalo capovolto al centro della carta. In questo modo, la persona che lo riceverà vedrà la parte superiore della scatola quando lo aprirà. Avvolgi il regalo con la carta. Una delle due parti dovrà avere un paio di centimetri extra per fissare la carta con il nastro adesivo. Aggiungi un fiocco sufficientemente grande da avvolgere il regalo. Per un look classico, avrai bisogno di un nastro che misuri il doppio delle dimensioni del regalo in lunghezza, larghezza e profondità, così potrai anche legarlo.

A partire dal 1983, alcuni film farseschi o comici sono stati rilasciati ogni anno intorno a Natale in Italia, ed erano conosciuti come cinepanettoni: cine per “Cinema”, e “panettone” dolce pane di festa tradizionalmente mangiato a Natale.
Starting in 1983, some farcical or comic movies were released every year around Christmas in Italy and were known as cinepanettoni: cine for “Cinema”, and “panettone” sweet holiday bread traditionally eaten at Christmas.
