“Quattro Metà” by Martino Coli
Il romanzo intelligente “Quattro Metà” di Martino Coli e il recente film di Netflix (Four to Dinner) si basano sulla teoria platonica delle anime gemelle. L’autore cerca di svelare l’idea esposta da Platone che siamo tutti parte di due metà di una singola entità che sono stati separati e stanno cercando l’un l’altro per sentirsi di nuovo completo.
Martino Coli’s clever novel “Quattro Metà” and recent Netflix film (Four to Dinner) are premised on Plato’s theory of soul mates. The author seeks to unravel the idea set forth by Plato that we are all part of two halves of a single entity that have been separated and are seeking each other to feel complete again.
Nel discorso di Aristofane nel “Simposio”, si narra che un tempo gli esseri umani erano esseri sferici con due facce, quattro braccia e quattro gambe. Questi esseri erano molto potenti e minacciavano gli dei, così Zeus decise di dividerli in due per diminuirne il potere, creando così gli esseri umani come li conosciamo oggi. Da allora, ogni metà cerca incessantemente la sua controparte perduta, la sua “anima gemella”, per ritrovare l’unità e la completezza perdute.
In Aristophanes’ speech in the “Symposium”, it is said that humans were once spherical beings with two faces, four arms, and four legs. These beings were mighty and threatened the gods, so Zeus divided them in two to diminish their power, thus creating human beings as we know them today. Since then, every half has been relentlessly searching for its lost counterpart, its “soul mate”, to regain lost unity and completeness.

The week of October 16th the “Quattro Metà” Book Club Question/Discussion Study Guide will be posted to the Studentessa Matta Website on a password-protected page that only book club members will have access to.
The Matta Italian Group Book Club will consist of 2-3 people and will meet once a week for Five 1-hour sessions via group Zoom calls.
Groups are forming – Start dates and meeting times are flexible depending on
member schedules. It is also possible to start the week of October 23rd, 2023.
