Come forse, saprete già… o forse no… Io ho una cotta per Lorenzo. Lorenzo chi chiedete? Boh! Lorenzo de’ Medici ovviamente!

As you may or may not know… I have a thing for Lorenzo. Lorenzo, who you ask? Why… Lorenzo de’ Medici of course!

Sono matta per Lorenzo ma non in un senso “Pazzi!”

I’m crazy for Lorenzo but not in a “Pazzi” kind of way!

Forse anche sapete che Lorenzo de’ Medici è un protagonista importante nel mio primo romanzo “Dreaming Sophia.” In fatti, la mia protagonista Sophia, che prende il nome da Sophia Loren, ha “una conversazione” con lui nella chiesa di San Lorenzo dedicata alla famiglia dei Medici. Il loro incontro si svolge nella cappella dei principi, accanto alla Nuova Sagrestia costruita da Michelangelo, che ospita anche le statue che scolpì di Alba e Tramonto e Notte e Giorno per le tombe dei suoi amati “fratelli” Medici— Lorenzo e Giuliano

Perhaps you also know that Lorenzo de’ Medici features prominently in my first novel “Dreaming Sophia.” In fact, my protagonist Sophia, named after Sophia Loren, has a “conversation” with him in the church of San Lorenzo dedicated to the Medici family. Their meeting takes place in the chapel of the princes next to the New Sacristy built by Michelangelo, which also houses the statues he carved of Dawn & Dusk and Night & Day for the tombs of his beloved Medici “brothers” — Lorenzo and Giuliano.

Quindi, potete solo immaginare la mia gioia, quando finalmente ho avuto la possibilità di sedermi e tuffarmi nella seconda stagione dei Medici — I maestri di Firenze — prodotta da RAI.

So, you can only imagine my delight, when I finally got the chance to sit down and binge-watch the second season of the Medici — Masters of Florence produced by the Italian network RAI.

Ero altrettanto affascinata dalla seconda stagione, come lo ero dalla prima. Dovremo solo ricordare che si tratta di TV e fiction storica, quindi alcuni dettagli sono impreziositi. Nel complesso, tuttavia, il pezzo d’epoca è piuttosto affascinante e le scene girate a Montepulciano, Mantova, Palazzo Ducale a Firenze, Pienza, Volterra, Roma e Tivoli sono… beh, semplicemente incredibilmente belle. Valgono la pena e dalla prima visione di Firenze e del Duomo, ero pronta a sospendere la mia incredulità e immergermi nelle prove e tribolazioni di Lorenzo il Magnifico (interpretato dall’attraente e affasciante attore britannico Daniel Sharman) mentre prese potere a vent’anni.

I was just as mesmerized by the second season, as I was by the first. Let’s just remember that this is TV and historical fiction, so some of the details are embellished. On the whole, however, the period piece is quite mesmerizing and the scenes filmed in Montepulciano, Mantova, Palazzo Ducale in Florence, Pienza, Volterra, Roma e Tivoli are… well, simply breathtakingly beautiful. They are worth the price of admission, and from the first view of Florence and the Duomo I was ready to suspend my disbelief and dive into the trials and tribulations of Lorenzo il Magnifico (played by a dashingly handsome British actor Daniel Sharman) as he rose to power at the early age of twenty.

Sinossi: L’anno è 1470. Il potere della famiglia Medici è stato consolidato col temp. Lorenzo è chiamato a prendere il posto di suo padre dopo un tentativo di ucciderlo a causa di cattiva gestione bancaria. Come nuovo capo della famiglia dei Medici Lorenzo deve prendersi cura di suo fratello Giuliano e sua sorella Bianca. Sposa Clarice Orsini, una nobile donna di Roma, e la sua amicizia con Botticelli dà vita al Rinascimento. Il suo contrasto con papa Sisto porta Firenze nel moment sanguinoso della sua storia, la cospirazione dei Pazzi.

Synopsis: The year is 1470. Medici’s family power has been consolidated over time. Lorenzo is called to take his father’s place after an attempt on his life which reveals years of poor bank management from them. As the new head of Medici’s family Lorenzo has to take care of his brother Giuliano and his sister Bianca. He marries Clarice Orsini, a noblewoman from Rome, and his friendship with Botticelli gives life to Renaissance. His contrast with Pope Sixtus brings Florence to the most bloody moment of its History, the Pazzi conspiracy.

Momento preferito / Favorite moment

Come storica dell’arte, mi è piaciuto molto il momento in cui la nonna di Lorenzo, Contessina, gli mostra l’affresco nella cappella di Palazzo Medici dipinta da Benozzo Gozzoli raffigurante l’Adorazione dei Magi. In questo particolare dipinto sono ritratti dei Medici, tra cui un giovane Lorenzo seduto su uno stallone bianco — il prescelto — che conduce la processione. Per me è stato toccante e intelligente intrecciare i due aspetti di Lorenzo, il politico, con quello di Lorenzo, il patrono delle arti di Firenze.

As an art historian, I loved the moment when Lorenzo’s grandmother, Contessina shows him the fresco in the Medici Palace’s chapel painted by Benozzo Gozzoli depicting the Adoration of the Magi. In this particular painting are portraits of the Medici, including a young Lorenzo seated on a white stallion — the chosen one — leading the procession. For me, it was touching and clever to intertwine the two aspects of Lorenzo the politician with that of Lorenzo the patron of the arts in Florence.

Consiglio vivamente di guardare I Medici – Maestri di Firenze. Le scene, i set, il dramma valgono la pena. C’è drama, amore, romanticismo, Botticelli…e persino l’affascinante Simonette — la musa ispiratrice di innumerevoli dipinti che amiamo ancora oggi!

I highly recommend watching Medici – The Masters of Florence. The scenes, the sets, the drama are well worth the time. There is drama, love, romance, Botticelli… and even the fascinating Simonetta — the muse that would inspire countless paintings we love still today!
