È stata un’estate meravigliosa per me, spero che sia andata bene anche per voi! Ho sempre un nuovo progetto o qualcosa di interessante da condividere con voi attraverso il blog e questi video su Youtube. È un gran divertimento per me! Oggi sono veramente contenta di vedervi perché volevo farvi sapere alcune notizie.
It has been a great summer for me, I hope it has gone well also for all of you! I always seem to have a new project or something interesting to share with you on the blog and in these YouTube videos. It is an absolute pleasure for me! Today I am really pleased to see you all because I wanted to fill you on what will be going on with me next month.
Tra poco partirò per l’Italia di nuovo. Sì! Sto per partire per l’Italia ancora una volta! Posso sentirvi dire: “Addirittura!!!!” Non ci possiamo credere! Non eri a Roma lo scorso mese? Sì!! Lo, so, lo so…sembra che sia appena tornata da Roma…è vero che sono stata lì a luglio per alcune settimane con uno dei miei language workshops. Ho passato due settimane favolose con alcuni lettori del blog che volevano perfezionare la loro conoscenza della lingua e della cultura a Roma.
It just a bit, I will be leaving for Italy again. Yep! I’m going to Italy once again! I can just hear you all saying: “Really!!! We can’t believe it! Weren’t you just in Rome last month?” Yes, I know, I know…seems that I just returned from Rome…it is true that I was there in July for a couple of weeks with one of my Italian Language Workshops. I spent two great weeks with blog readers who wanted to improve their understanding of the language and culture in Rome.
Oltre a scrivere il blog, una cosa che mi piace molto è viaggiare in Italia con altri studenti che condividono la mia passione per il Paese! Adesso è l’ora di tornare per un nuovo work shop con 10 lettori del blog! Sono molto felice…e questa volta la destinazione sarà Lucca in Toscana! Durante le mattine studieremo a Lucca Italian School e nei pomeriggi faremo attività ed escursioni tutti insieme per scoprire di più di Lucca e della Toscana.
Other than writing posts for the blog, my next favorite thing is to travel to Italy with others who share my love of Italy. It is now time to return for a new Matta Language Work with ten blog readers! I am really excited…and this time the destination will be Lucca in Toscana! During the mornings we will study at Lucca Italian School and in the afternoon we will make excursions together to learn more about Lucca and Tuscany.

Have you ever been to Lucca? It is a fantastic city!
Lucca, solo un’ora ad ovest di Firenze e solo venti minuti in treno da Pisa, vi abbraccia subito con le sue mura medioevali e i viali alberati. Vi accogliera’ dal momento in cui passerete attraverso le porte imponenti e vi sentirete subito al sicuro e a casa. Originariamente la città è stata costruita dagli Estruschi e poi abitata dai Romani. Passando da Piazza S. Michele, costruita nel luogo dell’originale Foro romano, poi passeggiando lungo via Fillungo ormai popolare per il suo shopping, l’antica storia è rivelata dalle pietre di Lucca. Questo è ancora più evidente nella curvatura dei muri della Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
Lucca, just an hour west of Florence and only twenty minutes by train from Pisa, embraces you immediately with her medieval walls & tree-lined paths. She draws you in, the moment you pass through one of her impressive portals and you immediately feel safe and at home. Originally the city was built by the Etruscans and later inhabited by the Romans. As you wander from Piazza S. Michele, built in the spot of the original Roman Foro, to stroll down via Fillungo now popular for its shopping, ancient history is revealed in the very stones of Lucca. This is no more evident than in the curvature of the walls of Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
Una volta lo spazio era usato per i giochi romani, adesso è un punto di incontro sociale, famoso per i suoi festival musicali e dove vengono serviti alcuni dei migliori Spritz e Shakerato della città. I ristoranti sono abbondanti a Lucca e da non mancare è la degustazione di una ciotola di zuppa di farro o di un piatto di tortellini Lucchesi con ricco sugo di carne. Lucca è anche nota per i suoi sformati di verdure e naturalmente per il Buccellato, un dolce tipico fatto con uvette e semi di anice, che viene preparato solo in questa città medioevale.
Once home to Roman games, now it is a social gathering spot, popular for its music festivals and where some of the city’s best spritzes and shakeratos are served. Restaurants are plentiful in Lucca and you won’t want to miss tasting a bowl of “farro” / barley soup or a plate of Lucchesi tortellini served with a rich meat sauce. Lucca is also well known for its “sformati” or vegetable pies and of course its “Buccellato”, a typical sweet cake filled with raisins and aniseed, that is only made in this medieval town.
Lucca è meno turistica e sicuramente meno affollata di Firenze. Come risultato avrete un’esperienza più autentica visitando la città che è anche il luogo di nascita di Giacomo Puccini. È anche la sede di numerose chiese romaniche – San Martino e San Michele, simili nello stile al duomo di Pisa col suo iconico campanile. Salendo la torre Guinigi, la torre medioevale più alta di Lucca (e l’unica con alberi che crescono sulla sua cima) avrete una vista spettacolare della città e della Garfagnana, le montagne a nord di Lucca.
Lucca is less touristy and certainly less crowded than Florence. As a result, you will have a more authentic experience visiting the town that is the historic birthplace of composer Giacomo Puccini. It is also home to several Romanesque churches – San Martino and San Michele, similar in style to Pisa’s iconic Duomo and bell tower. Climbing la Torre Guinigi, the tallest medieval tower in Lucca (and the only one with trees growing out of its top) you will have a spectacular bird’s eye view of the city and the Garfagnana, the mountains to the north of Lucca.
La cosa che rende Lucca incredibilmente unica sono però le mura che circondano la città. Costruite dai Romani, furono poi ampliate e arricchite con grandi cumuli di terra nel 1500 mille cinque cento per respingere gli attacchi dei Medici di Firenze. Le mura non videro mai una battaglia e sono state smilitarizzate da Napoleone. Nel diciottesimo XVIII secolo Louisa Borbone, con l’aiuto del suo architetto reale, ha trasformato le mura in un magnifico viale alberato. Oggi è un parco giochi per i Lucchesi e un luogo ideale per fare jogging, andare a spasso con i cani o fare un giro in bicicletta…e anche per fare una passeggiata romantica. È anche un luogo per rilassarsi e per sedersi su una panchina ad ascoltare le conversazioni che galleggiano intorno, mentre si ammira la luce di un pomeriggio toscano perfetto…un posto ideale per innamorarsi della antica città di Lucca e delle sue mura affascinanti.
But, the thing that makes Lucca incredibly unique are the walls that encircle the city. Originally built by the Romans, they were later enlarged and fortified with great mounds of earth in the 1500s to fend off attacks by the Medicis of Florence. The walls never saw battle and were demilitarized by Napoleon. In the 18th century Louisa Bourbon, with the help of her royal architect, turned the walls into a magnificent tree lined boulevard. Today it is a playground for the Lucchesi and a perfect place to go for a jog, walk a dog, or pedal a bike. It is also a relaxing place to sit on a park bench and listen to Italian conversation flow all around you as you bask in the glow of a perfect Tuscan afternoon…and fall in love with the charming walled town of Lucca!
Allora ragazzi! Dopo aver parlato così tanto di Lucca…non vedo l’ora di tornarci la settimana prossima. Se pubblichero’ meno video durante il mese di settembre, adesso sapete il perché! OK guys! After having just spoken so much about Lucca… I can’t wait to go back there next week. If I publish fewer videos and blog posts during the month of September, now you know why! I am out of the office in Italy! But, when I return home I will have so much to tell you and many videos to share with you.
