How do I feel after spending nearly seven weeks in Italy?
Mi sento fantastica!
I feel wonderful!
Ho appena trascorso più di un mese nella terra di pasta, gelato, giostre e spritz, e sono ancora pieno del linguaggio e della vitalità di tutto questo.
I’ve just spent more than a month in the land of pasta, gelato, jousting, and spritzes, and I’m still filled with the language and the vibrancy of it all.
Tornato a casa ad Austin, dove il tempo è più caldo di un forno per la pizza, saluto amici e familiari con abbracci stretti e baci a doppia guancia, in stile italiano. Quando mi chiedono com’è stato il mio soggiorno in Italia, gli racconto le mie avventure, sottolineando ogni frase con gesti animati della mano, e non posso fare a meno di scivolare nelle espressioni italiane. Parlo del vino, dello spritz, delle patatine al rosmarino e della pasta e le tagliatte e delle avventure che ho avuto non solo ad Arezzo ma anche a Bologna, Lago di Garda, Trento e Selva di Gardena.
Back home in Austin, where the weather is hotter than a pizza oven, I’m greeting friends and family with tight hugs and double-cheek kisses, Italian style. When they ask how my time in Italy was, I regal them with tales of my adventures, punctuating every sentence with animated hand gestures, and I can’t help but slip in Italian expressions. I tell them about the wine, spritzes, patatine al rosmarino and the pasta and tagliatte I consumed with friends and the adventures I had not only in Arezzo but in Bologna, Lago di Garda, Trento, and Selva di Gardena.
Li anche delizio con storie sul mio divertimento con i miei studenti italiani che hanno partecipato al programma Matta e Arezzo Language di quest’anno 2023 con gli insegnanti di Cultura Italiana. Abbiamo esplorato Arezzo insieme, partecipato alla giostra, fatto la pasta, e chiacchierato in italiano per tutto il tempo! Quest’anno ho avuto il piacere di accogliere studenti da Puerto Ricco e dall’Australia!
I also regal them with stories about my fun with my Italian learners who participated in this year’s 2023 Matta and Arezzo Language program with the teachers at Cultura Italiana. We explored Arezzo together, participated in the joust, made pasta, and chatted in Italian the entire time! This June I was delighted to welcome students from as far away as Puerto Ricco and Australia!
Disfo la valigia, tiro fuori i tesori che ho acquisito nelle ultime due settimane, un nuovo paio di scarpe, un vestito e una collana fatta da un artista a Cortona. Mentre è bello tornare a casa ad Austin, l’odore dell’espresso appena fatto al mattino mi riporta ai miei bar preferiti di Arezzo – quello situato sotto la scuola Cultura Italiana in Piazza San Jacopo e quello situato in cima alla collina di Arezzo vicino al Duomo dove il barista crea opere d’arte con schiuma di latte nel mio cappuccino.
Unpacking my suitcase, I pull out treasures I’ve acquired over the past couple of weeks, a new pair of shoes, a dress, and a necklace made by an artist in Cortona. While it is nice to be back home in Austin, the smell of freshly brewed espresso in the morning takes me right back to my favorite bars in Arezzo — the one located under the school Cultura Italiana in Piazza San Jacopo and the one situated at the top of Arezzo’s hill near the Duomo where the barista creates works of art with milk foam in my cappuccino.
Mentre sono di nuovo in contatto con i miei studenti e riprendo la mia routine di insegnamento, sorrido al pensiero del programma Matta Arezzo di quest’anno. Le risate dei nuovi amici, la bellezza dell’architettura antica, e gli incantevoli tramonti che dipingevano il cielo in incantevoli tonalità mentre guardavo il paesaggio toscano ed il cameratismo condiviso la sera prima della giostra nel quartiere di Santo Spirito durante la cena propiziatoria nella quale abbiamo applaudito le giostre.
As I reconnect with my students and resume my teaching routines, I smile at the mere thought of this year’s Matta Arezzo program. The laughter of newfound friends, the beauty of ancient architecture, and the enchanting sunsets that painted the sky in lovely hues as I gazed out over the Tuscan landscape and the camaraderie shared the night before the joust in the neighborhood of Santo Spirito during the good luck dinner in which we cheered on the jousters.
Così, amici della Studentessa Matta, tornando dopo aver trascorso un mese in Italia si sente come avere una scintilla permanente di gioia che accende la mia anima e mi fa ballare e cantare al ritmo della dolce vita. E anche se sono tornata a casa, l’Italia e la lingua italiana continuano a vivere dentro di me, ricordandomi di abbracciare la vita con entusiasmo e assaporare ogni momento squisito.
So, friends of the Studentessa Matta, returning after spending a month in Italy feels like having a permanent spark of joy that ignites my soul and makes me dance and sing to the rhythm of la dolce vita. And even though I’m back home, Italy and the Italian language continue to live within me, reminding me to embrace life enthusiastically and savor every exquisite moment.
Avrò disfatto la valigia, ma non sono ancora pronta a mettere le valigie in magazzino. Tornerò in Italia alla fine di agosto per TRE nuovi programmi italiani a Lucca, Arezzo e Montepulciano. Non è troppo tardi per unirsi a me e ad altri intrepidi studenti di lingua per i programmi di lingua italiana Autunno 2023 Matta.
I may have just unpacked my suitcase, but I’m not ready to put my bags into storage just yet. I will return to Italy at the end of August for THREE new Italian programs in Lucca, Arezzo, and Montepulciano. It’s not too late to join me and other intrepid language learners for the Fall 2023 Matta Italian language programs.
