This has been a difficult year for everyone, especially the language schools in Italy. Paola Testi of the Cultura Italiana Language School in Arezzo and I stay in touch frequently regarding our language programs in Arezzo. Unfortunately, the 2020 program was postponed but we sincerely hope that 2021 will find us reuniting in Italy to live and learn with our favorite teachers in all our favorite cities. Quando i tempi si fanno duri… dobbiamo diventare più creativi su come continuiamo a fare le cose che ci piacciono… cioè insegnare e imparare l’italiano.

As we wait to return to Italy, we can learn via the internet! Here is a letter of positivity written by Monica one of the language teachers at Cultura Italiana in Arezzo in which she shares the highs and lows of teaching Italian during Covid times.

8 marzo, 2020—La voce del presidente del consiglio Giuseppe Conte comunica che l’Italia, a partire dal giorno dopo, sarebbe diventata zona rossa. Quarantena, lockdown e Covid sono parole entrate nei nostri pensieri e mai più uscite.
March 8th, 2020—Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s voice announces that Italy, starting the following day, will become a red zone. Quarantine, lockdown, and Covid are words that entered our thoughts that day and haven’t left.
Non è stato facile capire da subito cosa avrebbe significato , ma nonostante questo, nonostante il dolore, la paura e la difficoltà nel credere a ciò che stava succedendo, ci siamo tirati su le maniche. La mattina dopo, i nostri insegnanti stavano già pensando a come organizzarsi, quando farlo, come rendere il passaggio da lezione in presenza a lezione on line.
It wasn’t easy to immediately understand what it would all mean, but despite this, despite the pain, fear, and difficulty in believing what was happening, we rolled up our sleeves. The next morning, the Cultura Italiana teachers were already thinking about how to organize ourselves, how to carry on, and how to make the transition from classroom teaching to online teaching.
Riunioni, webinar, corsi di aggiornamento, ricerche, e il nostro lavoro—il lavoro più bello del mondo—è tornato a essere “facile.”
Meetings, webinars, refresher courses, research, and our
work—the best job in the world— is once again “easy.”
La nostra scuola da diversi anni, ormai, si occupava di corsi on line, ma si trattava soprattutto di lezioni individuali con ex studenti o corsi di preparazione a esami specifici. Trasformare corsi intensivi e in presenza, strutturati per funzionare in una scuola insieme ad altre persone, con una lavagna, una segreteria e la possibilità di usare manuali, giochi, dadi, ascoltare la musica o vedere scene di un film, in qualcosa di uguale ma totalmente diverso possibile solo attraverso un computer, ci ha messo alla prova. Eppure è stato bellissimo!
Our school has offered online courses for several years, but mainly for private lessons with former students or helping students prepare for specific exams. Transforming intensive classroom courses at the school with whiteboards, a school secretary, hands-on learning materials, games, dice, and listening comprehension devices like DVD recorders and films into something different using only the computer has put us to the test. Yet, the experience has been fantastic!
Abbiamo scovato programmi e supporti, network e siti web. Abbiamo usato la lavagna digitale, la condivisione dei documenti, degli schermi (per i video) e degli audio (per le canzoni). Abbiamo continuato a giocare, anche se in modo diverso, abbiamo scoperto libri nuovi, letture, e ci siamo aperti a studenti da tutto il mondo che non avevamo mai visto. Abbiamo organizzato aperitivi su Skype, ideato rubriche di cucina, fatto conoscere la nostra città di Arezzo attraverso le foto e applicato il nostro amore per l’insegnamento, la scuola e la città a ogni lezione, ogni corso, ogni studente.
We found programs, websites, and networks to aid us in our teaching. We use the digital whiteboard, file sharing, and screen sharing for videos and audio. We continue to play, although in a different way. We have discovered new books and readings and can share them with students worldwide who previously were unfamiliar with them. We have organized aperitifs on Skype, created cooking columns, and made our city of Arezzo known through photos and our love of teaching in every lesson, every course to every student.
Siamo increduli noi stessi, perché i risultati sono e sono stati eccezionali, perché i nostri studenti sono felici, perché noi ci sentiamo di lavorare e creare ambienti perfetti per l’apprendimento della nostra bellissima lingua.
We are incredulous and very pleased with ourselves because the results have been exceptional. After all, our students are happy, and we feel we have worked to create a perfect learning environment for our lovely language.
Ci manca la scuola.
We miss the school.
Ci manca il contatto umano.
We miss human contact.
Ci manca la normalità.
We miss what used to be normal.
Non vediamo l’ora che tutto torni come prima e che questa assurda e impensabile situazione finisca, ma nel frattempo, siamo fieri di ciò che stiamo creando.
We can’t wait for everything to be as it was before and for this absurd and unthinkable situation to end, but in the meantime, we are proud of what we are creating.
