Oggi sentiremo da Karen Henderson, un’americana che abita a Venezia. Lei e suo marito Mike si sono trasferiti a Venezia da Baltimore, Maryland sette anni fa. Cominciavano ad impazzire per i loro lavori molto frenetici e dato che volevano vivere una vita più semplice, hanno venduto quasi tutto e si sono trasferiti a Venezia, una città di cui si erano entrambi innamorati durante molte vacanze passate lì.
Quest’anno sono stata stupita dalle belle foto che Karen ha fatto durante il periodo di Carnevale. Le ho chiesto permesso di condividere alcune delle foto con voi qui sul blog. Ecco il guest post di Karen, che ha scritto in Italiano e in Inglese.
Today we will hear from Karen Henderson, an American who lives in Venice. She and her husband Mike moved to Venice from Baltimore, Maryland seven years ago. They were beginning to burn out in their very hectic careers and wanted to live a simpler life, so they sold just about everything and moved to Venice, a city they had both fallen in love with after many vacations there.
This year I was amazed by the lovely photos that Karen took during Carnival. I asked her permission to share some of the photos with you all here on the blog. Here is also Karen’s guest post which she wrote in Italian and English.
Il Carnevale di Venezia si è appena concluso con il Martedì Grasso, e ora ho bisogno di una settimana o più di tranquillità per riprendermi da tutto questo entusiasmo. Venezia in un giorno normale è uno dei luoghi più magici della terra. Durante il Carnevale, bisogna moltiplicare il tutto per circa 10 volte. Persone provenienti da tutto il mondo si ritrovano a Venezia per fa festa e quest’anno non ha fatto eccezione. Durante l’evento di apertura ufficiale 100.000 persone hanno affollato Piazza San Marco per vedere il Volo dell’Angelo. Nonostante la folla, mi piace essere in piazza a guardare la discesa dell’angelo ogni anno!
Carnevale in Venice just ended on Fat Tuesday, and I now need a week or so of quiet to just to recover from all the excitement. Venice on a normal day is one of the most magical places on earth. During Carnevale, multiply that by about 10. People from all over the globe flock to Venice to celebrate and this year was no exception. Just at the official opening event alone, 100,000 people crowded St. Mark’s Square to see the Flight of the Angel. Despite the crowds, I do love being in the square to watch the angel make her descent every year!
Per la gente del posto, il Carnevale inizia effettivamente una settimana prima del volo dell’Angelo. Un fine settimana speciale progettato per i residenti di Venezia prende il via con una serata spettacolare che mi ricorda Cirque du Sole o uno spettacolo di Las Vegas. Per essere sincera, la maggior parte dei residenti veneziani partecipano solo a questi festeggiamenti e non agli eventi che sono progettati per i turisti. La mattina dopo un corteo acquatico (Corteo Acqua) di centinaia di vogatori in costume tradizionale sfila sul Canal Grande fino al canale di Cannaregio, per poi sbarcare e partecipare ad una grande festa di strada, con un sacco di cibo tradizionale, dolci e, naturalmente, vino. Quest’anno, dopo tanti anni passati solo ad osservare la sfilata, anche io ho remato in quella parata. Onestamente, non ci sono parole per descrivere quanto ero entusiasta di far parte di quel corteo insieme a un gruppo di donne veneziane.
For locals, Carnevale actually starts a week before the Angel makes her flight. A very special weekend celebration designed just for residents of Venice kicks off Carnival with an over-the-top evening spectacular that reminds me of Cirque du Soleil, or a Las Vegas show. For the record, most Venetian residents only participate in Carnevale events that aren’t designed for tourists. The next morning a water parade (Corteo Acqua) of hundreds of rowers dressed in traditional costumes row up the Grand Canal to the Cannaregio canal, then disembark to enjoy a huge street party, with lots of traditional food, sweet treats, and of course, wine. This year, after many years spent only observing the parade, even I paddled in the parade. Honestly, there are no words to describe how thrilled I was to be part of that boat cortege, rowing alongside a group of Venetian women.
Costumi e maschere elaborate sono una parte importante dell’atmosfera carnevalesca, così come lo sono i numerosi balli in maschera che si svolgono di notte. Quest’anno, il tema del Carnevale è stato “ il festival più delizioso del mondo”. Ho visto alcuni costumi molto creativi, ad esempio una donna con un cappello di aragosta, e un’altra donna vestita come una torta a strati. Alcuni dei modelli sono professionisti, altri sono persone normali che amano venire a Carnevale ogni anno per mostrare le loro creazioni e partecipare alle competizioni in costume che si svolgono in piazza San Marco ogni giorno. Fare foto dei costumi è uno dei miei passatempi preferiti durante il Carnevale. Come potete vedere dalle foto, sono tutte opere d’arte.
Elaborate costumes and masks are a big part of the Carnevale atmosphere, as are the many spectacular masquerade balls that take place nightly. This year, the Carnevale theme was “ The World’s most delicious festival”. I saw some very creative costumes, for example, a woman with a lobster hat, and another woman dressed as a layer cake. Some of the models are professionals, others are just normal people who enjoy coming to Carnevale every year to show off their creations and participate in the daily costume competitions that are held in St. Mark’s square every day. Taking photos of the costumes is one of my favorite things to do during Carnevale. As you can see from the photos, they are all works of art.
L’anno scorso e anche quest’anno, le mie esperienze del Carnevale sono state un po’ diverse. In entrambi anni sono stata invitata a lavorare con una casa cinematografica americana che stava filmando qui. Quest’anno, ho accompagnato Laura MacKenzie e tutto il set di Traveler, mentre giravano un episodio su Carnevale di Venezia che andrà in onda il prossimo autunno. Ho avuto modo di condividere alcuni dei miei luoghi preferiti di Venezia con loro, e loro mi hanno portato al Ballo dei Doge che si è tenuto a Palazzo Pisani-Moretta sul Canal Grande. Wow, ho potuto vedere da vicino come festeggiano i vip! Un biglietto per un ballo di Carnevale costa da 200 a 1500 euro a testa.
Last year and again this year, my Carnevale experiences were a bit different. Both years I was invited to work with an American production company while they were here filming about Venice. This year, I accompanied the hosts and film crew of the American TV show, Laura MacKenzie’s Traveler, while they shot an episode about Venice’s Carnevale which will air next fall. I got to share some of my favorite parts of Venice with them, and they took me along to one of the most elaborate Carnevale balls, Il Ballo dei Doge which was held at Palazzo Pisani-Moretta on the Grand Canal. Wow, I got an up close look at how the other half parties! Tickets to a Carnevale ball run anywhere from 200 Euros to 1500 euros each.
Venezia è tranquilla oggi. Tutti i turisti sono tornati a casa, e non si trovano più le frittelle. L’unico ricordo del Carnevale sono i coriandoli che rimangono ovunque.
Venice is quiet today. All the thousands of tourists have gone home, and there isn’t one frittelle to be found. The only reminder of Carnevale is all the confetti that that remains everywhere.
