quanto ho desiderato questo momento!!!

I’m here in Arezzo at the school Cultura Italiana…
how I’ve longed for this moment!!!

È bello essere di nuovo in Italia, ad Arezzo, in Piazza Grande… e, soprattutto, alla scuola di lingua Cultura Italiana con la mia amica e collega Paola Testi.

It’s great to be back in Italy, in Arezzo, in Piazza Grande… and most importantly, back at the Cultura Italiana language school with my friend and colleague Paola Testi.

Cultura Italiana si trova in piazza San Jacopo nel quartiere Santo Spirito. Infatti il bastione, epicentro di tutto ciò che è Blu e Giallo (i colori della squadra giostra di Santo Spirito) è proprio dietro l’angolo. Mi sento a casa ad Arezzo e ho adottato questo quartiere come mio, e anche la febbre da giostra.

Cultura Italiana is located in piazza San Jacopo in the Santo Spirito quartier. In fact, the bastion, the epicenter of all things Blu e Giallo (the colors of Santo Spirito’s jousting team) is right around the corner. I feel at home in Arezzo and have adopted this neighborhood as my own, as well its jousting fever.

La giostra si è svolta questo fine settimana dopo una pausa di due anni a causa del Covid… e ragazzi è stata emozionante! Parlerò alla giostra di nuovo tra poco…

The joust occurred this weekend after a two-year break due to Covid… and boy was it exciting! I’ll get to the joust in just a moment…

Per prima cosa voglio raccontarvi dove mi trovo in questo momento… alla Cultura Italiana! Qui le cose stanno riprendendo e gli studenti stanno tornando. Sto scrivendo questo post in una delle aule mentre Paola e Gianmarco, un’altra presenza fissa qui alla scuola, stanno insegnando di nuovo agli studenti di ritorno di persona.

First I want to tell you about where I find myself at the current moment… at Cultura Italiana! Here, things are picking up, and students are returning. I’m typing this post in one of the classrooms while Paola and Gianmarco, another fixture here at the school, are teaching returning students in person again.

Ma vedi le stanze ancora vuote? Vogliamo riempirli con più studenti!! La scuola di Paola è pronta ad accogliere studenti di qualsiasi livello in qualsiasi periodo dell’anno. Abbiamo anche lanciato il nostro programma di collaborazione 2022 che si svolgerà qui ad Arezzo il prossimo giugno, quando si svolgerà la prossima giostra. But, see these rooms that are still empty? We want to fill them with more students!! Paola’s school is ready to welcome any level of language learner at any time of year. Parliamo della Giostra
del Saraceno di Arezzo!

Ok… ora parliamo della giostra e di cosa è successo ieri in Piazza Grande ad Arezzo!

Okay… now let’s talk about the joust and what went down in Arezzo’s Piazza Grande yesterday!

Prima di tutto, come molti sanno di prima mano da quando si sono uniti a me, la giostra ha catturato il mio interesse, il mio cuore e la mia immaginazione fin dal primo momento in cui l’ho vista. Non solo la competizione che si svolge due volte l’anno a giugno e settembre, ma lo spirito della città: l’energia e il fuoco vitale delle persone che vivono qui.

First of all, as many know from first hand from joining me, the joust captured my interest, heart, and imagination right from the first moment I saw it. Not just the competition itself that occurs twice a year in June and September, but the spirit of the city – the energy and life fire of the people who live here.

Mi piace così tanto che mi sono ispirata a scrivere un romanzo ambientato qui ad Arezzo. Si chiama “Waking Isabell” (in Italiano “Il risveglio di Isabella”), è pieno di tradizioni aretine, la giostra e persino il bellissimo fantasma di Isabella de Medici, il cui ritratto è appeso nella casa di Giorgio Vasari, che si trova anche qui.

I love it so much I was inspired to write a novel set here in Arezzo. It’s called walking Isabella, and it’s full of Arezzo lore, the joust, and even the beautiful ghost of Isabella de Medici, whose portrait hangs in the home of Giorgio Vasari, also located here.

E ora quel romanzo è in mostra e in vendita nel museo giostra di Arezzo! Un momento di grande orgoglio per questo scrittrice.

And now my novel is featured and on sale in Arezzo’s joust museum! A very proud moment for this author.

Ora sulla giostra di quest’anno. Essendo stata annullata
tre volte a causa del Covid, quest’anno la giostra
era molto attesa e ben desiderata.

Now about this year’s joust. Since it has been canceled
three times due to Covid, this year the joust was
much anticipated and longed for.

A settembre, la giostra si svolge la domenica pomeriggio. La giornata inizia alle nove del mattino quando viene sparato il primo colpo di mortaio! È così forte e sonoro che risuona in tutta la città. In totale, il cannone viene sparato cinque volte nel corso della giornata per scandire i tempi dei vari eventi: la processione dell’araldo in giro per il paese al mattino per invitare tutti a partecipare alla giostra, la benedizione dei giostratori nei loro rioni, la processione dei giostrieri per la città, e l’ultimo colpo di mortaio indica che è ora di entrare in Piazza Grande per vedere i giostratori contendersi per la Lancia d’oro.

In September, the joust occurs Sunday afternoon. The day kicks off at 9 in the morning when the first canon is fired! It is so loud and sonic it reverberates all over the city. In total, the canon is fired five times throughout the day to mark the timing of various events: the herald’s procession around the town in the morning to invite all to participate in the joust, the benediction of the jousters in their neighborhoods, the jouster’s procession through the city and finally, the last colpo di mortaio indicates it is time to enter Piazza Grande to watch the jousters vie for the Lancia d’oro.

All’interno di Piazza Grande è stata realizzata una grande “lizza” o ippodromo con terra battuta. I giostratori corrono lungo la pista e colpiscono il bersaglio o “buratto” la figura di legno che rappresenta i saraceno o gli infedeli dai quali i giostrieri stanno proteggendo la città. Tutt’intorno alla piazza sono state costruite tribune per contenere tutti i tifosi.

Inside Piazza Grande, a large “lizza” or race track has been constructed with pack dirt. The Jousters race up the track and strike the target or  “buratto” the wooden Saracen dummy representing the infidels the jousters are protecting the city from. All around the piazza stands have been constructed to hold all the fans.

Quest’anno non solo è esploso il canone, ma è esplosa anche la piazza!

This year not only did the canon explode, but the piazza exploded as well, too!

Come mai? Beh… tre cose insolite sono successe in questa giostra.

Why? Well… three unusual things happened in this joust.

È normale che un giostratore può lasciare cadere la sua lancia con conseguente ZERO punti, ma raramente la lancia di un cavalliere si rompe quando colpisce il bersaglio, con conseguente raddoppio dei punti. Inoltre, è raro che entrambi i giostratori del stesso quartiere ottengano punteggi perfetti uno dopo l’altro.

It is common for a jouster to drop his lance resulting in ZERO points, but rarely does a rider’s lance break when striking the target, resulting in the doubling of points. Also, is it rare for both jousters from the same team to score perfect scores one after the other.

Curiosità: In italiano un evento raro si chiama “una mosca bianca”. In inglese diremmo “rare as a blue moon.”

Fun fact: In Italian a rare event is called “una mosca bianca.”
In English we would say “rare as a blue moon.”

Insomma… nella Giostra del 2021 sono successe tutte e tre queste cose! Porta Crocifera ha rotto una lancia, Porta del Foro ha fatto cadere una lancia e Porta Santo Spirito ha segnato DUE 5 perfetti — Gianmaria ed Elia siete strepitosi!!!

But in the 2021 Giostra all three of these things happened! Porta Crocifera broke a lance, Porta del Foro dropped a lance and Porta Santo Spirito scored TWO perfect 5s — Way to go Gianmaria and Elia!!!!

Alla fine, nonostante gli ottimi punteggi di Porta Santo Spirito, la rottura spontanea della lancia ha portato in vantaggio Porta Crucifera (anche se ha segnato un 4 al secondo turno) e come risultato loro hanno vinto la Giostra 2021 per un punto.

In the end, despite the excellent scores by Porta Santo Spirito, the spontaneous breaking of the lance put Porta Crucifera (even though they scored a 4 in the second round) and in the end they won the 2021 Joust by one point.

Curiosità: Per questa giostra la
lancia d’oro è dedicata a Dante!

Fun fact: For this year’s joust the
Golden Lance is dedicated to Dante!

La Lancia d’oro—il premio—è scolpito da un artista aretino locale e ogni anno è dedicato a uno specifico evento storico italiano, papa o persona influente.

The Golden Lance—the prize—it is carved by a local Aretino artist and each year is dedicated to a specific Italian historical event, pope, or influential person.

Insomma… Tutto questo è successo da quando sono arrivata in Italia lo scorso venerdì—tante passeggiate per la città dove io incontro tanti amici, chiacchierare senza sosta, aperitive, cene, escursione fuori città… e sì un po’ di shopping!

In short … All this has happened since I arrived in Italy last Friday—many walks around the city and meet-ups with friends, chatting non-stop in Italian, aperitifs, dinners, excursions outside the city … and yes a little shopping!

I’m loving the view of the Duomo from my rooftop garden apartment. Grazie to Enza, who is my Homestay colleague in Arezzo. Just think… you too could enjoy this view while learning Italian in Arezzo!
