“Turning to Stone” è il quarto libro di una serie di gialli scritti in quattro parti da Gabriel Valjan. Nel questo quattro libro della “serie Roma”, ci troviamo a Napoli per un nuovo thriller ambientato tra lo sfondo colorato di vecchi palazzi napoletani e le macerie della corruzione moderna. Nelle più avventure di Italia più recente di Valjan, Alabaster Black, alias Bianca Nerini, uno specialista esperto di computer e i suoi amici devono superare in astuzia la camorra, una potente organizzazione criminale.
“Turning to Stone” is the fourth book of a 4 part thriller series written by Gabriel Valjan. In the fourth installment of the Roma series, we settle into Naples for a new thriller set amongst the colorful backdrop of Neapolitan palazzi and the rubble of modern corruption. In Valjan’s most recent Italy adventures, Alabaster Black, aka Bianca Nerini a savvy computer specialist, and her collies must outwit the Camorra, a powerful crime syndicate.
Vi ammetto che ero abbastanza preso con la copertina di questo nuovo libro. Mi piace il “Caravaggio-esque” urlo congelato della statua medusa che abbellisce il libro. Mi ha suscitato il mio interesse, offrendo la giusta quantità di orrore e terrore. Sono stata incuriosita e subito ho cominciato a leggere il nuovo giallo di Valjan. Se vi è piaciuto i libri precedenti di Valjan, allora vi piacerà quest’ultimo romanzo. In questo libro l’autore si concentra sulla camorra, un consorzio di guidato da tipi mafiosi che ha avuto origine i Campania di cui Napoli è la capitale.
I must admit that I was quite taken with the cover of this new book. I love the “Caravaggio-esque” frozen scream of the medusa statue that graces the book. It piqued my interest, offering up just the right amount of horror and terror. I was intrigued and immediately delved into the pages of Valjean’s latest novel. If you like Valjan’s previous books, then you will like his latest piece of detective fiction. In this novel, the author focuses on the Camorra, an Italian Mafia-driven syndicate that originated in Campania, of which Naples is the capital.
La camorra ha una struttura più “orizzontale” che “verticale, rispetto alla struttura piramidale di Cosa Nostra la organizzazione siciliana. Di conseguenza, i clan della Camorra agiscono indipendentemente l’uno dall’altro e sono più inclini a litigare tra loro. Questo però rende la camorra più resistente e difficile da spegnere; quando alti dirigenti vengono arrestati o uccisi, nuovi clan germinano dei monconi delle vecchie.
The Camorra has more of a ‘horizontal’ than a ‘vertical’ structure, compared to the Sicilian Cosa Nostra’s pyramidal structure. As a result, individual Camorra clans act independently of each other and are more prone to feuding among themselves. This however makes the Camorra more resilient and difficult to shut down; when top leaders are arrested or killed, new clans germinate out of the stumps of old ones.
Roberto Saviano, un giornalista investigativo che ha scritto una denuncia delle attività della camorra, dice che questa rete tentacolare di clan camorristi ora è più grande della mafia siciliana e le altre bande organizzate del sud Italia in numero, in potere e della violenza spietata. È evidente che l’autore è stato influenzato dal lavoro di Saviano, e ha anche dedicato questo quarto libro a Saviano.
Roberto Saviano, an investigative journalist who wrote an exposé of the activities of the Camorra, says that this sprawling network of Camorra clans now is larger than the Sicilian Mafia, and southern Italy’s other organized gangs, in numbers, in economic power, and in ruthless violence. It is evident that the author was influenced by the investigative work of Saviano, and has even dedicated this fourth book to Saviano.
Ancora una volta la scrittura di Valjean è acuta e interessante. A volte molto divertente. È evidente che l’autore è un attento osservatore della vita quotidiana e comunica anche i dettagli più normali e banali in modo creativo e unico. A volte tuttavia, la ricchezza delle informazioni supplementari travolge la direzione generale della trama.
Once again Valjean’s writing is bright and interesting. At times quite surprising and even delightful. It is evident that he is a keen observer of daily life and communicates even small inconsequential details in a creative way and unique manner. Sometimes, however, the wealth of extra information overwhelms the overall direction of the plot.
