“Threading the Needle” è il terzo libro di una serie di gialli scritti in quattro parti da Gabriel Valjan. I questo terzo “capitolo” della “serie Roma” siamo trasportati attraverso l’Atlantico e siamo di nuovo in Italia! Evviva! Questa volta la trama si svolge a Milano e ruota attorno ad un arma segreta in fase di sviluppo con un appaltatore della difesa. Ancora una volta il lettore è tirato dentro un caso di cospirazione, come Bianca e i suoi amici scoprono segreti del governo.
“Threading the Needle” is the third book of a 4 part thriller series written by Gabriel Valjan. In this third installment of the Roma series we are transported back across the Atlantic and we are back in Italy! Whoo Hoo! This time the plot plays out in Milan and revolves around a secret weapon under development with a defense contractor. Once again the reader is pulled into the case of conspiracy as Bianca and her friends uncover government secrets.
In questo libro, l’autore si tuffa dentro un periodo della storia italiana chiamato “anni di piombo”. Questo era un periodo molto buio, in cui il Paese era terrorizzato dai bombardamenti, violenze e disordini sociali dal 1960 al 1970. Gli anni di piombo sono iniziati con la morte di Antonio Annarumma nel 1969 quando era sparto e ucciso, la strage di piazza Fontana e il bombardamento della stazione ferroviaria di Bologna. Durante questo periodo ci sono stati atti di terrorismo senza precedenti, effettuate da entrambi gruppi paramilitari di destra e di sinistra.
In this book, the author delves into a period of Italian history called the “Years of Lead”. This was a dark time in Italy’s past, when the country was terrorized by bombings, violence and social unrest spanning the 1960s to the 1970s. The “years of lead” began with the shooting death of the policeman Antonio Annarumma in 1969, the Piazza Fontana bombing and the bombing of the train station in Bologna. During this time there were unprecedented acts of terrorism carried out by both right- and left-wing paramilitary groups.
Ancora una volta la scrittura di Valjean è acuta e interessante. A volte molto divertente. È evidente che l’autore è un attento osservatore della vita quotidiana e comunica anche i dettagli più normali e banali in modo creativo e unico. A volte tuttavia, la ricchezza delle informazioni supplementari travolge la direzione generale della trama.
Once again Valjean’s writing is bright and interesting. At times quite surprising and even delightful. It is evident that he is a keen observer of daily life and communicates even small inconsequential details in a creative way and unique manner. Sometimes, however, the wealth of extra information overwhelms the overall direction of the plot.

I am loving this series! Valjan really “gets” the Italian culture and this book in particular brought me back to my childhood when I remember seeing my father and grandfather reading about all that was happening in Italy during those years of terrorism.
