“Rome, Underground” è il primo volume della tetralogia di romanzi gialli scritta da Gabriel Valjan. Nel suo romanzo d’esordio ci abbiamo presentato, per la prima volta Alabaster Black, alias Bianca Nerini. Lei è un’esperta in ragioneria forense, che si nasconde a Roma dal suo ex datore di lavoro, un’organizzazione segreta statunitense soprannominata “Rendition”. Alabaster è un genio del computer, che si trasferisce da una città all’altra di evitare essere scoperta. Pensate a Jennifer Garner della serie televisiva “Alias”, che ha scoperto dei gruppi di spie, ha risolto misteri e ha rubato informazioni tecniche (come si dice: pirating / hacking computers) come nessun altro.
“Rome, Underground” is the first book of a four-part thriller series written by Gabriel Valjan. In his debut novel, we are first introduced to Alabaster Black, aka Bianca Nerini. She is a savvy forensic accountant who is hiding out in Rome from her former employer, a covert U.S. organization dubbed “Rendition”. Alabaster is a computer genius, who moves from city to city to avoid detection. Think Jennifer Garner in ALIAS, cracking spy rings, solving mysteries, and hacking into computers like nobody else’s business.
Da come scrivere è evidente che Gabriel Valjean conosce bene l’Italia, la sua lingua e della sua storia. Il suo romanzo è pone l’accento sui fatti storici, sulla cultura e sul cibo italiani. State attenti! Non leggete questo libro se siete affamati. Ci sono tante descrizioni dei vari piatti italiani. Sembra quasi che ogni dieci pagine, i protagonisti si tuffino in un piatto di pasta, mentre discutono della loro prossima mossa. L’autore è un buon conoscitore sia dei prosciutti che di formaggi, sia di pasta fatta a mano, che di vino e sughi regionali, si di che di contabili forense che di cifrari criptici.
It is very evident from Gabriel Valjan’s writing that he knows quite a lot about Italy, the language, and its history. His story is heavily accentuated with historical facts, pop culture tidbits, and descriptions of food. Beware! Don’t read this book if you are hungry! There are lots and lots of descriptions of Italian food. It seems every ten pages or so, the characters are delving into a plate of pasta, as they discuss their next move. The author is quite knowledgeable about the prosciuttos and cheeses, handmade pasta, homegrown wines, and regional sauces, as he is about accounting forensics and cryptic ciphers.
In “Rome, Underground” conosciamo anche i compari di Alabaster, che lavorano in un mondo crudele e duro, pieno di personaggi squallido e di agenti di polizia volgari. Eppure Alabaster riesce a tenere il passo con questo gruppo di uomini duri, usando le parolacce come un marinaio e mantenendosi sempre un passo avanti ai suoi rudi compagni. Lei è anche un’abile speleologa, che è un vantaggio, visto che lei sta investigando una banda di trafficanti di oggetti culturale di Roma che stanno derubando tesori dalle scavi archeologici sotto la città.
In “Rome, Underground” we become familiar with Alabaster’s cronies, who operate in a “hardboiled-Sam-Spade” kind of world, full of seamy characters and crusty police agents. Yet, Alabaster can hold her own amongst this tough group of men, swearing with the best of them keeping one step ahead of her male counterparts. She is also quite adept at spelunking…which turns out to be an advantage, as she is hot on the heels of a band of smugglers who are robbing Roman cultural treasures found in archeological digs under the city.
All’insaputa di molti turisti, sotto le strade di Roma si trova un groviglio di gallerie e di cave, scavate dai primi Romani che costruirono la città. Alabaster e le sue colleghe, con una trappola, scoprono i criminali che sono in combutta con la mafia.
Unbeknownst to many tourists, beneath the streets of Rome lies a tangle of quarry tunnels, cut by the first Romans who built the city. Alabaster, along with her cohorts, infiltrate a crime ring, creating a trap for the thieves who are led by mob-type bad guys.
La scrittura di Valjean è colorita e intrigante. Mi ha colpito la varietà di informazione sull’Italia che l’autore riesce a trasmettere. Qualche volta questo è gestita bene, altre volte invece risulta un po’ pesante per chi non ha familiarità con l’Italia. La presentazione di una tale miriade di dettagli, devia l’attenzione del lettore dal filo principale della narrazione e rallenta il ritmo del libro. Mi sono piaciute le descrizioni della città. È molto evidente che ha trascorso un bel po’ di tempo in giro per la città sopra gli scavi…. e ho un vago sospetto che ha anche passato un po’ di tempo nei sotterranei!
Valjan’s writing is colorful and intriguing. I was impressed by the wealth of information that the author manages to convey about Italy. While at times this is handled well, other times it seems a little heavy-handed for someone who isn’t as familiar with Italy, the presentation of such a myriad of details, diverts the reader’s focus from the storyline and slows the pace of the book. I did enjoy the author’s descriptions of Rome. It is clear he has spent a good deal of time walking around the city above ground… and I have a sneaking suspicion walking around underground as well!
