Buon giorno cari ascoltatori. Come state? Bentornati ad un nuovo episodio di “tutti matti per l’italiano! Sono Melissa, la matta e oggi è il 24 marzo. Benvenuti! In questo episodio parleremo di un sito internet d’apprendimento chiamato italki. Prima di iniziare però volevo farvi sapere che io sto vivendo una settimana fantastica. Potete indovinare il perché? Questa settimana sto festeggiando il mio compleanno. Infatti, sabato prossimo, il 28 marzo è il giorno esatto in cui sono nata. Gia’ adesso la mia settimana è già piena di un sacco di sorprese divertenti, molti amici sono venuti a trovarmi, e ho già iniziato a ricevere un paio di regali per il mio compleanno, tra cui una bella torta.

Buon giorno dear listeners. How are you all? Welcome back to a new episode of “Tutti Matti per l’Italiano”! I’m Melissa, la matta and today is March 25. Welcome! In this episode, we are going to be talking about an online learning site called italki. Before we get started though I wanted to let you know what a great week this has been for me so far…guess why? This week I am celebrating my birthday. Indeed, this coming Saturday, March 28th, is the actual anniversary of the day I was born. So far my week has been filled with lots of fun surprises, many friends have stopped by, and I have already started receiving a couple of birthday gifts, including a beautiful cake.

Io penso, perché festeggiare il proprio compleanno per un solo giorno? Perché non festeggiare per tutto il mese di marzo? Boh! In America riesco a fare questo… ma non si farebbe mai in Italia! Guarda! In Italia alcuni amici italiani pensano che porti sfortuna augurare a qualcuno “Buon Compleanno” prima che inizi il giorno esatto. Non si deve tentare la sorte! Credo di vivere in un modo un po’ temerario e pericoloso, ed è per questo che mi chiamano “la matta”.

In my opinion, why celebrate your birthday for only one day? Why not make the entire month of March a celebration? Well, here in the U.S. I can get away with this…but that is not in Italy. You see, a couple of my Italian friends think that you are tempting fate if you wish someone “Happy Birthday” before the beginning of the exact day! You must not tempt fate! I guess I’m just living recklessly and dangerously, and that’s why they call me “la matta” the crazy girl!

Beh, basta con il giubilo e smettiamo di parlare delle feste e delle torte di compleanno…perché mi sta venendo l’acquolina in bocca! Torniamo al tema del podcast di oggi – quello di italki. Ne avete mai sentito parlare di questo sito? Si tratta di un sito dove è possibile trovare un insegnante per imparare online l’italiano o qualsiasi altra lingua. Nel podcast di oggi parlerò delle mie esperienze personali con questo sito e sentirete anche le storie di tre insegnanti italiane che ho incontrato attraverso il sito. Sono Francesca Mazza di Lucca, Maria Fusco di Napoli, e Olivia Cini di origini toscane, ma che attualmente vive a Malta.

Well, enough jubilation and talk of birthday parties and birthday cake…because it is starting to make me hungry! Let’s get back to today’s podcast topic which is italki. Have you heard of it? It is a website where you can find a teacher and learn a language online. In today’s podcast, I will talk a little about my personal experiences with the italki site and you will also hear from three Italian teachers all of whom I have met through the site. They are Francesca Mazza from Lucca, Maria Fusco from Napoli, and Olivia Cini originally from Tuscany, but who is currently living in Malta.

Fatemi pensare, prima di tutto, a come ho scoperto italk. Dunque vediamo…allora, penso che sia stato circa un anno fa, quando ho iniziato a registrare questo podcast. Sono stata contattata da Lamar Duffy, il direttore di marketing per il sito di italki. Mi ha invitato ad esplorare il sito, per fare una recensione per il blog “Matta”. Dopo aver trascorso un po’ di tempo sul sito ho concluso che mi  piaceva molto il suo obiettivo e infatti mi sono iscritta alla comunità di italki. Ho continuato ad abbracciare la comunità e a contribuire alla creazione del portale italiano, dove i membri possono raccontare le loro esperienze d’apprendimento. Sulla pagina di questo podcast nel mio blog metterò i link ai quattro articoli che ho scritto per loro.

I’m trying now to remember how I first heard about italk. Let me see…I think it was about a year ago about the time I first started doing this podcast. I was contacted by Lamar Duffy, the marketing director for the italki site. He invited me to explore the site and review it for the Matta blog. After taking some time to explore it a bit, I discovered that I really liked the premise of the website and in fact joined the italki community. I continued to embrace the community by contributing to the creation of the Italian portal, where members can share stories about their learning experiences. On the podcast page of the Matta blog I’ll include the links to my italki articles.

Ma come funziona italki? Come ho già detto si tratta di uno strumento educativo che aiuta gli studenti di lingua straniera a contattare insegnanti e compagni di conversazione madrelingua. Iscriversi al sito è gratuito, ma è richiesta la registrazione per contattare gli altri membri. È invece richiesto Il pagamento per fare lezione con i docenti on-line. È possibile scegliere tra due tipi di insegnanti; quelli che sono professionisti oppure “tutors informali” che sono madrelingua appassionati della loro lingua. Ogni insegnante di italki crea un profilo, in modo che chiunque possa facilmente trovare qualcuno compatibile con il proprio stile.

How does italki work? As I have already mentioned it is an educational site that helps foreign language learners connect with online teachers and chat buddies. Subscribing to the site is free, but registration is required to contact other members. Payment is necessary if you want to pay for language lessons with a teacher online. You can choose between two types of teachers; those who are professionals and those who are “informal tutors” – native speakers who are passionate about their native tongue. Each italki teacher creates a profile so that you can easily find one that is compatible with your personal style.

Una volta che avete selezionato un insegnante, per fissare un appuntamento è necessario solo scegliere una data e un’orario dal calendario dell’insegnante. É facilissimo. La pianificazione è resa ancora più liscia, perché il sito calcola per voi le differenze del fuso orario tra paesi. Poi si paga per le lezioni di lingua con “gettoni di italk”, direttamente attraverso il sito. Una volta che c’è un appuntamento, l’insegnante e lo studente si collegano via Skype per comunicare. È così semplice! Ecco un vantaggio per voi cari lettori: se vi iscriverete italki attraverso il mio blog riceverete $10 di sconto da usare per le lezioni. 

Once you select a teacher, to make an appointment you just have to choose a date and time from a teacher’s calendar. It’s that easy. Planning is made even smoother because the site calculates for you the differences between time zones. You then pay for the language lessons using italki credits, directly through the site. Once an appointment is made, the teacher and student connect via Skype to communicate. It is that simple! Here’s an advantage for my friends on the Matta blog; if you sign up through my blog you will receive $10 credit to use on language lessons. 

Ero così incuriosita dal sito che ho deciso di portarlo fuori per un collaudo. Ho programmato la mia prima lezione con Francesca Mazza. Lei vive a Lucca e visto che avevo già intenzione di andare lì con uno dei miei gruppi per un workshop, ho deciso di provare italki con lei. Mi è piaciuto anche che Francesca offrisse lezioni di Storia dell’Arte. Ho fissato un appuntamento su Skype, e lei mi ha inviato in una email delle cose da leggere prima della nostra lezione. Mi ha mandato un articolo “Perché studiare la storia dell’arte? Sette buoni motivi da dare ai vostri studenti”, alcune immagini di Tiziano (L’amor sacro e profano) … anche un video di Tiziano e anche alcuni esercizi grammaticali. Come risultato mi sono sentita pronta e a mio agio quando ci siamo incontrate su Skype. Mi ha ascoltato con attenzione, mi ha corretto la grammatica e la pronuncia di volta in volta e ha risposto alle domande. Quando la nostra lezione si è conclusa mi sono ritrovata molto soddisfatta. Sono stati tempo e soldi ben spesi!

I was intrigued with the site and so I decided to take it out for a test drive. I scheduled my first session with Francesca Mazza. She lives in Lucca and since I already had plans to travel there on a Matta Language program, I decided to start with her. I also like the fact that Francesca offered Art History lessons. After contacting her and setting up a time to talk on Skype I received from Francesca an email with some reading materials to review prior to our lesson. She sent me the article “Perché studiare la storia dell’arte? Sette buoni motivi da dare ai vostri studenti”, some pictures of Titian paintings (L’Amor Sacro e L’amor Profano and the Assumption Altar piece), a video and some grammar exercises. As a result, I also felt very comfortable speaking with Francesca when we met for the first time on Skype. She listened carefully, corrected my grammar and pronunciation from time to time and answered my grammar. When our lesson ended, I was very satisfied. It was time and money well spent!

Grazie Francesca. Da quella prima lezione, Francesca ed io continuiamo a rimanere in contatto attraverso social media. Abbiamo provato ad incontrarci di persona lo scorso giugno a Lucca. Purtroppo un contrattempo ce l‘ha impedito, quindi abbiamo spostato l’appuntamento per il prossimo settembre, quando ritornerò a Lucca per un altro workshop.

Grazie Francesca. Since that first lesson, Francesca and I have continued to stay in touch through italki and social media. We tried to meet up in person last June when I was in Lucca. Unfortunately, due to problems with our schedules, we have had to re-schedule our meeting for next September when I return to Lucca with another Matta Italian learning workshop.

Dopo la mia esperienza positiva con Francesca, ho deciso di fissare un altro appuntamento attraverso italki. Questa volta ho scelto un’insegnante che vive a Napoli. Il suo nome è Maria. Abbiamo chiacchierato per un’ora di conversazione molto piacevole in cui abbiamo imparato molto l’una dall’altra.

Anche noi siamo diventate amiche e continuiamo a rimanere in contatto tramite Facebook. Ecco una registrazione che Maria mi ha mandato in cui si presenta, parla di Napoli e perche’ le piace essere un insegnanti su italki.

After my positive experience with Francesca, I decided to schedule another appointment. This time I selected a teacher who lives in the south of Italy, in Napoli. Her name is Maria. We happily chatted for an hour and we learned a lot about each other.

We too have become friends and continue to stay in touch through Facebook. Here is a recording that Maria sent me in which she introduces herself, talks about Napoli and what she enjoys about being an iTalki teacher.

Sono stata a Napoli solo una volta nella vita mia, e adesso non vedo l’ora di tornarci per incontrare Maria di persona per prendere un caffè insieme.

I’ve been to Napoli only once and now look forward to returning in order to meet up with Maria in person and go out for coffee together.

Ora vorrei presentarvi un’ultima insegnante che ho avuto il piacere di incontrare attraverso italki. Si chiama Olivia e lei viene dalla Toscana. Attualmente vive a Malta. Ho avuto diverse conversazioni con Olivia negli ultimi tre mesi e mi diverto molto con lei. Penso che lei abbia la voce più bella che abbia mai sentito: e’ ricca e profonda…davvero bella. Come tutti gli insegnanti che ho conosciuto attraverso italki, anche lei mi ha messo subito a mio agio. Ecco ora Olivia che ci dice qualcosa di più di se stessa.

Now I’d like to introduce you to one last teacher that I have had the pleasure of meeting through Italki. Her name is Olivia and she is from Tuscany. Currently, she lives in Malta. I’ve had several iTalki sessions with Olivia over the past three months and I really enjoy our conversations too. She has the loveliest of voices. It is deep and rich and really beautiful. As with all the teachers with whom I’ve met through iTalki, she put me quickly at ease and I feel very comfortable chatting with her and telling her about myself and my current projects. Here now is Olivia to tell us more about herself.

Mi piace molto il concetto del sito di italki, perché non solo facilita l’apprendimento delle lingue, ma facilita le amicizie. Tutte le persone che ho incontrato attraverso italki sono interessanti e amichevoli e adesso sono contenta di chiamarli amici. Ecco! Questa e’ la ragione per cui mi piace imparare l’italiano! Sono le relazioni che stringo ogni giorno con le persone che nutrono il fuoco della mia passione per l’italiano.

I really like the concept of the iTalki site, because not only does it facilitate language learning but it always facilitates friendships. Everyone I have met through italki has been interesting and friendly and I now call them friends. And that folks, is why I love learning this language! It’s the people connections that I form every day, that keep my language fires burning!
