Hi everyone, I am Martina, I am Italian and I live near Rome.

Dunque, il Carnevale in Italia è una festa molto sentita, specialmente dai bambini, infatti già adesso le strade sono ricoperte di coriandoli e stelle filanti.

So, Carnival in Italy is a festival that is enjoyed by everyone, especially children, infact already the streets are covered with confetti and streamers.

In molte città e paesi d’Italia si organizzano sfilate e giochi: l’evento più importante, che conoscono tutti, è il Carnevale di Venezia, che è molto famoso, ma in realtà lungo tutto lo stivale ci sono eventi che vengono organizzati, sono magari minori ma comunque molto importanti.

In many cities and towns in Italy parades and games are organized: the most important event which everyone knows, is the Carnival in Venice, which is very famous, but in fact throughout the boot there are events that are organized, perhaps smaller, but still very important.

Io per esempio quando ero piccola abitavo in un paesino sul mare e ad ogni Carnevale si tiene la sfilata dei carri colorati e chi vuole può mascherarsi. Quindi tutta la gente scende per le strade a festeggiare e in particolare i bambini si ritrovano vestiti con le maschere dei loro personaggi preferiti.

I for example, when I was a little girl, I lived in a small village on the sea and every Carnival there was a parade of colorful floats and people who wanted to wear masks. All the people came out into the streets to celebrate and in particular, the children wore clothes with pictures of their favorite characters.

Di fatto sono più o meno quasi scomparse le maschere della tradizione popolare, però la tradizione comunque si sente e di fatto, appunto, nessun bambino rinuncerebbe mai a vestire i panni del suo personaggio preferito, quello dei cartoni animati, di solito.

Ora, cosa posso raccontarvi? Beh, ricordo che una volta, credo che avessi avuto più o meno cinque anni, volevo vestirmi da principessa, perché tutte le mie amiche bambine di quell’età si vestivano da principessa, forse anche ora lo fanno.

In fact, more or less the traditional folk masks have almost disappeared, but the tradition is still carried out and no child would miss this opportunity to dress up as his favorite cartoon character. Now, what can I tell you? Well, I remember once, I think I was about five years old, I wanted to dress like a princess, because all my girl friends of that age wanted to dress like a princes, perhaps then even do now.

Purtroppo per me però mia madre non era per niente d’accordo!

Unfortunately for me, my mother didn’t agree at all!

Siccome all’epoca io prendevo lezioni di danza, danza classica, avevamo fatto un saggio a teatro in cui quelli piccoli come me si erano vestiti da funghi.

Since at that time I was taking dance lessons, ballet we had had a recital and the little one like myself were dressed up as mushrooms.

Quindi, quelli più piccoli avevano danzato appunto vestiti da funghi, e allora mia madre pensò bene di utilizzare nuovamente quel vestito da fungo riciclandolo per Carnevale, così da evitare di comprarmi un altro vestito.

So, the smaller ones had just danced dressed as mushrooms and so my mother thought that it would be just fine to recycle the costume for Carnival, so as not to buy another dress.

E quindi finii per mascherarmi da fungo in mezzo a tutte le mie amichette che erano vestite da principesse!

And so, I ended up in a mushroom costume in the midst of all my girlfriends who were dressed as princesses!

Adesso, la cosa già fa ridere in sé, ma la cosa peggiore in realtà fu che siccome faceva molto caldo (fu un Carnevale piuttosto anomalo quell’anno) io soffrii molto nel mio vestito da fungo, che era interamente di spugna  quindi si trattava di stare come in un forno sostanzialmente!

Now that alone makes you laugh, but the worst part actually was that that year it was very hot (it was rather unusual weather for carnival) I suffered a lot in my mushroom costume, which was made entirely of sponge so it was like staying inside a furnace!

Quindi, quel Carnevale non fu molto divertente, però è sicuramente quello che ora, a distanza di molti anni, ricordo con più piacere.

So that Carnevale wasn’t so fun for me, however, after many years now I can remember it with pleasure.
