In questo podcast parlerò dell’AFS Cultural Exchange Program. Qui in America siamo alla fine dell’anno scolastico e le vacanze estive sono appena cominciate. Di solito è bello festeggiare il fatto di essere liberi dagli impegni scolastici…ma per alcuni è un momento triste perché la classe 2014/2015 di AFS – The International Student Exchange program – è tornata al suo paese d’origine. Molte lacrime sono state versate quando le famiglie e gli studenti SI SONO abbracciati e si sono DATI l’ultimo addio quando gli studenti si sono imbarcati sugli aeroplani per tornare delle loro famiglie che non hanno visto per dieci mesi.
In this podcast I will be talking about AFS Cultural Exchange Program. Here in America we are at the end of the American school term and summer vacation has begun. Normally this is a thing to celebrate…but for some it is a sad moment too as this year’s 2014/2015 AFS class returns to their home countries. Many tears were shed as families and students said their final goodbyes and students boarded planes to return to families they haven’t seen in ten months.

In the podcast you will hear two Italian girls who participated on the AFS program here in California. Both girls will make a presentation and you will have the opportunity to hear their different voices and accents – one from the south of Italy and one from the north.

Sono felice di aver deciso di partecipare al programma di Cultural Exchange di AFS due volte. La prima esperienza con AFS è stata nel 2011 quando la mia famiglia ha ospitato Francesca, una simpatica ragazza molto colta di Locorotondo in Puglia. Mi considero molto fortunata di essere stata la “mamma americana” di Francesca. Abbiamo trascorso insieme un anno meraviglioso e sono stata felice di vedere realizzarsi il sogno di Francesca di diplomarsi da una scuola superiore americana.
AFS-USA is a nonprofit organization and a leader in intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world for over 65 years. I have been extremely fortunate to have participated in the AFS Cultural exchange program twice. My first experience with AFS was in 2012 when my family hosted Francesca, a friendly and academically gifted Italian girl from Locorotondo in Puglia. I was fortunate to be Francesca’s American mamma and we spent a wonderful year together and I happily watched as Francesca’s dream of graduating from an American high school came true!
L’anno scorso la mia amica e vicina di casa, dopo aver osservato la nostra esperienza con Francesca, ha deciso di ospitare Martina una ragazza di Pordenone, una piccola città del nord Italia nel Veneto. Quest’anno, invece di essere “la mamma” ero “la zia” e ho aiutato AFS come una “liaison”. Era mia responsabilità di visitare Martina ogni mese per verificare che tutto andasse bene, e poi mandare una relazione al dipartimento di stato per documentare la sua visita negli stati uniti.
This past year my friend and neighbor, after observing our experience with Francesca decided to host Martina a girl from Pordenone, a small city in northern Italy in the Veneto. This year instead of being “the mom” I was “the aunt” and I helped AFS as a liaison, that is it was my responsibility to visit Martina every month to make sure that things were going well and file reports about her experience here in the U.S. with the State Department.
Per un adolescente l’esperienza di vivere in un paese straniero per tutto l’anno scolastico è davvero incredibile, ma non solo per i ragazzi, ma anche per le famiglie ospitanti e la loro comunità. Ma non finisce qui. Si formano nuove amicizie tra le due famiglie divise da oceano e sono coinvolte molte persone. È un processo molto interessante da osservare. I ragazzi arrivano alle porte delle loro famiglie ospitante, timorosi, parlando inglese in un modo esitante. Ma alla fine dell’anno partono totalmente trasformati. Scoprono nuovi aspetti di loro stessi che non sapevano esistessero e parlano correntemente l’inglese. La miglior cosa è che diventano una parte di una nuova famiglia con cui saranno sempre legati.
The experience for a teenager to live in a foreign country for the entire school year is really incredible, not only for the teens but also for the host families and the communities that embrace the foreign students. But it doesn’t stop there. New friendships are also formed between host families and the student’s families and lives on both sides of the ocean, are forever changed by this kind of cultural exchange. It is a very interesting process to observe. The kids arrive on the doorstep of their host family strangers, insecure and speaking English hesitantly. They leave completely transformed, having discovered new aspects of their selves they never knew existed and speaking English fluently. But best of all they have become a part of a new family with whom they will forever be bonded.
Prima sentirete Francesca, una ragazza del sud Italia. Francesca è entrata a far parte della nostra vita nell’autunno del 2011. Francesca si è adeguata rapidamente alla nostra famiglia, imparando il nostro gergo e le espressioni familiari e subito si è tuffata nei corsi di giornalismo e teatro della scuola superiore. Al primo semestre infatti ha recitato nello spettacolo di Charles Dickens. Lei ora sta studiando giornalismo presso l’università americana John Cabet a Roma. Quest’anno con una borsa di studio ha studiato a New York e durante le vacanze primaverili è venuta a trovarci di nuovo in California.
First, we will hear from Francesca, a southern Italian girl. Francesca came into our lives in the fall of 2011. She fit right into our family and picked up on our American slang and expressions. She is a bright young lady and immediately dove into journalism classes and took up the theater at the high school. In fact, she had a speaking role in the school’s fall production of a Charles Dickens’ play. She is now studying Journalism at John Cabot American University in Rome. This year she studied for a semester in New York and during spring break hopped on a plane to visit us in California during her spring break.
Poi sentiremo Martina, una ragazza del nord. Fin dall’inizio era disposta a buttarsi nella sua nuova vita americana. È arrivata parlando bene l’inglese e ha continuato a perfezionare la sua conoscenza della lingua durante l’anno. Martina ama la danza, lo sport e la ginnastica e ha partecipato a tutte queste attività nella scuola americana. Come me, a Martina piace la musica di Jovanotti e prima di partire mi ha fatto un CD con una collezione di tutte le sue canzoni preferite. Martina torna a casa in Italia per finire l’ultimo anno di liceo, poi vuole continuare a studiare per diventare un medico.
Next, we will hear from Martina. Martina is a northern Italian girl. From the very beginning, she was ready and willing to participate in all aspects of her new American life. She arrived speaking English well and her language skills continued to improve throughout the year. Martina loves to dance, sports, and gymnastics and she participated in all these things during her year at her American High School. Like me, Martina loves Italian music and Jovanotti and before she returned home she made me a CD of her favorite Italian songs. Martina returns home to Italy and will finish her last year of Italian High School and then she has plans of becoming a doctor.
Sono felice che le mie due belle ragazze di AFS abbiano avuto la possibilità di incontrarsi quest’anno quando Francesca è venuta a trovarci durante le vacanze primaverili. Le due ragazze hanno molto in comune e condividono un’esperienza unica, che cambierà per sempre le loro vite. Prima di partire Martina mi ha detto “…so che questo non sarà un “addio”…ma solo un “arrivederci”. Sono d’accordo, perché adesso queste due ragazze fanno parte della mia famiglia…e ci rivedremo presto!
I am happy my two beautiful AFS girls got the chance to meet last spring when Francesca came to visit us over spring break. Those two beautiful girls have much in common and share a very unique experience, that will forever change their lives. But as Martina said to me before she left…I know that this will not be a goodbye…but only a see you later. Because, these two girls are now a part of my family…we will see each other again soon.
