Where there is language learning there are friends

Ciao a tutti! Sono appena tornata dall’Italia! Sono a casa solo da due giorni e sono pronta a ritornarci! Ho disfatto la valigia, lavato la biancheria e ho ripiegato tutti i vestiti per metterli di nuovo nella valigia. Ritornerò in Italia alla fine di agosto per il Matta Programma di lingua immersion ad Arezzo in collaborazione con Paola Testi e Cultura Italiana.

I have just returned from Italy! I’ve been home just two days and I’m ready to go again! I’ve unpacked, done laundry and am now making piles of clothes to go right back into the suitcase. I’ll be departing once again for Italy at the end of August for the Matta Arezzo Language Program in collaboration with Paola Testi and Cultura Italiana.

Il mese che ho appena passato in Italia è stato meraviglioso. All’inizio ho trascorso due settimane a Lucca con un bel gruppo di persone appassionate dell’Italia che imparavano l’italiano. Abbiamo studiato la mattina a Lucca Italian School e poi abbiamo esplorato la città e la zona circostante. Questa volta abbiamo anche fatto una gita in montagna per visitare le gallerie di marmo di Carrara e poi siamo andati al mare per trascorrere momenti di relax sdraiati sulla spiaggia a Lerici.

This past month in Italy was fantastic. I spent two weeks in Lucca with a delightful group of people passionate about Italy and learning Italian. We studied in the morning at Lucca Italian school and then explored the city and the surrounding area. This time we made it into the mountains to visit the Carrara marble caves and back down to the sea to spend time lounging in the sand on a beach in Lerici.

Dopo aver detto “arrivederci” al mio gruppo, mio marito mi ha raggiunto e insieme abbiamo viaggiato in Toscana, visitando Montepulciano – il sito del prossimo Matta Programma di lingua immersion (giugno 2018). Mi sono inamorata di Montepulciano e non vedo l’ora di condividere i dettagli del programma per l’anno prossimo. Staremo in appartamenti che si affacciano sulle pianure toscane e studieremo con Silvia Celli e gli altri bravi insegnanti del Sasso. 

After saying arrivederci to my group, I was joined by my husband. Together we traveled around Tuscany, visiting Montepulciano – the site of next June’s Matta Language Immersion program. I fell in love with Montepulciano, and I can’t wait to share details soon about next year’s program (June 2018), where we will stay in apartments overlooking the Tuscan plains and study with Silvia Celli and the teacher’s of Il Sasso. Dopo alcuni giorni a Montepulciano abbiamo lasciato la città per andare a trovare gli amici a Montefalco e poi siamo andati nella Maremma dove abbiamo trascorso un po’ di tempo con Virginia, una delle miei incantevoli insegnanti di Italian Homestay. Con Virginia ho avuto la possibilità di visitare il Giardino Tarocchi, Pitigliano e anche di fare un bagno nell`acqua calda che puzza un po` di zolfo a Saturnia.

After several days in Montepulciano, we pushed off to visit friends in Montefalco and then it was on to the Maremma where I spent time with Virginia, one of my lovely homestay language teachers. With Virginia, I got the chance to visit the Tarot Garden, Pitigliano, and I also soaked up the hot sulfur springs water in Saturnia.

Un punto fondamentale del viaggio è stato il soggiorno di quattro giorni a Napoli per partecipare al matrimonio di alcuni amici. Sono amici che ho conosciuto dieci anni fa sul sito di chat (Impariamo). Ci siamo sempre tenuti in contatto e ogni volta che sono in Italia ci incontriamo. Vedete?! Gli amici che si fanno imparando una nuova lingua diventano amici per la vita! Che bella cerimonia! Sono stata quasi andata in coma di eccesso di cibo durante il ricevimento. Tanti antipasti, DUE piatti di pasta, un secondo e i dolci, per non di parlare della torta nuziale!

A definite highlight of the trip was a four-day stay in Naples for a friend’s wedding. These friends I met learning Italian ten years ago on the chat site Impariamo! We have kept in touch over the years, and every time I am in Italy, we meet up. It just goes to show, friends made in Italy learning the language become friends for life! And what a wedding celebration! I nearly went into a food coma from all the delicious appetizers, four-course dinner, and dolci that followed. Not to mention the wedding cake! Mamma Mia!

Dopo Napoli siamo andati a Piano di Sorrento dove abbiamo alloggiato alla Gaggia, un piccolo B&B immerso nel mezzo di un limoneto. È stata una scelta perfetta, perché è a due fermate di treno dalla città di Sorrento, la quale e` purtroppo infestata dei turisti. Mi raccomando: andate a Piano di Sorrento! È più tranquilla e autentica. Ho passato un sacco di tempo in spiaggia e ho nuotato, e ho giocato con dei cuccioli al B&B. Ho anche bevuto tante limonite fresche fatte in casa. Sulla Costiera Amalfitana ho anche incontrato Antonella e Francesco, due insegnanti che offrono Homestay vicino a Pompei.

After Naples, it was on to Piano di Sorrento where we stayed in La Gaggia a sweet little B&B nestled in the middle of a lemon grove. It was an excellent choice, as it was two train stops away from the tourist-infested town of Sorrento. I got in a lot of beach time and swam daily in the sea. We also got to play with three-week-old puppies at the B&B. Our friends there also supplied us with plenty of homemade limonate! On the Amalfi Coast, I also visited with Antonella and Francesco, two homestay teachers who live near Pompeii. 

L’ultima tappa prima di tornare a San Francisco era Roma! Adesso conosco la città Eterna come il palmo della mia mano. È sempre divertente ripercorrere i passi e visitare i posti ed i locali preferiti. Ho anche avuto modo di incontrare una nuova insegnante, si chiama Emma ed offre esperienze di cucina personalizzata ed conversazioni mentre si passeggia in giro per la città. The final stop before returning home to San Francisco was Roma! By now la città Eterna is as familiar as the back of my hand. It is always fun to retrace steps and visit favorite sites and local haunts. I also got to meet a new homestay teacher – Emma – in Roma who offers personalized cooking experiences and walking conversation excursions around the city. More details on her offerings coming soon!

Ogni volta che io vado in Italia vivo momenti indimenticabili. La lingua è la chiave per fare amicizie e aprire le porte a esperienze nuove e memorabili. Ogni volta che ritorno, me rendo conto che le mie competenze linguistiche continuano a migliorare e le parole scorrono sempre più velocemente.

Every time I travel to Italy I have an amazing time. Language is the key to making friends and opening doors to memorable experiences. Every time I return, I also realize my language skills continue to improve and words flow even faster.

Non vedo l’ora di tornare in aereo per passare
un altro mese in Italia questo settembre.

I am looking forward to getting back on the plane
for another month in Italy this coming September.
