Today, I am delighted to introduce Patrizia, who has just returned from Italy, where she enjoyed a wonderful vacation with Elena, a teacher who hosts students at her home for a unique Italian cultural immersion experience in her hometown of Bergamo. Patrizia shares her experience in Italian and some photos from her trip. Here she is!

Sono Patrizia e studio l’italiano da cinque anni. Conosco Melissa, La Studentessa Matta, perché abitiamo tutte e due a Fremont, in California del nord, e frequentiamo gli stessi eventi dedicati agli appassionati della lingua italiana.
I’m Patrizia, and I’ve been studying Italian for five years. I know Melissa, the Studentessa Matta, because we both live in Fremont, Northern California, and attend the same events for Italian language enthusiasts.

An Unforgettable Summer with Elena in Bergamo and Lake Como
Quest’estate ho vissuto un’esperienza di Homestay in Italia per due settimane, studiando con un’insegnante che ho trovato sul sito della Studentessa Matta. Ho trascorso due settimane con Elena Arezio, alcuni giorni a Bergamo e il resto al Lago di Como. Il mio Homestay è stato a luglio, ed è stato un mese molto caldo, quindi abbiamo passato più tempo al Lago di Como, dove le temperature erano più fresche.
This summer, I had a two-week Homestay experience in Italy, studying with a teacher I found through the Studentessa Matta website. I spent two weeks with Elena Arezio—some days in Bergamo and the rest at Lake Como. My Homestay was in July, and it was quite hot, so we spent more time at Lake Como, where it was cooler.

Un Homestay è un’esperienza incredibile perché si entra improvvisamente a far parte della vita quotidiana di una famiglia italiana. Ho fatto venti ore di lezioni private ogni settimana con un programma flessibile. Ho condiviso ogni pasto con la famiglia, ed Elena mi ha anche mostrato come preparare alcune delle sue ricette preferite.
A Homestay is an incredible experience because you suddenly become part of the daily life of an Italian family. I had twenty hours of private lessons each week with a flexible schedule. I shared every meal with the family, and Elena even showed me how to prepare some of her favorite recipes.

Exploring Bergamo, Brescia, and Lake Como
L’Homestay ha incluso delle gite meravigliose. Siamo andate a Bergamo Alta, Brescia, Varenna e Bellagio. Ad Elena interessa tanto la storia, e durante queste gite ho imparato molte cose interessanti sulla storia d’Italia.
The Homestay included amazing excursions. We visited Bergamo Alta, Brescia, Varenna, and Bellagio. Elena has a great interest in history, and during these outings, I learned a lot of fascinating things about Italy’s past.
Un’esperienza che consiglio a tutti!
An Experience I Recommend to Everyone!
Molte persone mi hanno chiesto se mi sentivo a mio agio durante questa esperienza. La mia risposta è: “Certamente, senza dubbio!” Elena è un’insegnante fantastica e mi ha accolto calorosamente. Mi sono divertita a conversare con la sua famiglia e i suoi amici. Ho partecipato a cene e persino a una giornata in spiaggia con loro.
Many people have asked me if I felt comfortable during this experience. My answer is, “Certainly, without a doubt!” Elena is a fantastic teacher and welcomed me warmly. I enjoyed chatting with her family and friends. I joined them for dinners and even a beach day.
Il mio Homestay è stato molto positivo: ho migliorato il mio italiano, ho vissuto momenti indimenticabili e ho collezionato tanti ricordi meravigliosi!
