Nella mia esperienza personale, ho notato alcune cose sul cibo e sugli italiani.
La prima cosa… festival italiani ruotano
attorno a una tavola piena del cibo.
The first thing… Italian festivals revolve around a table of food.
Sembra che al centro di ogni celebrazione… non importa se è religiosa, civile o se è una sagra, una reivocazione, un compleanno, un anniversario, o un matrimonio… in somma, ci sia sempre una tavola piena di cibo al centro di tutto!
It seems that at the center of every celebration… it doesn’t matter if it is religious, civil or if it is a festival, a re-enactment, a birthday, an anniversary, a wedding… in short, there is always a table full of food in the center of everything!
La seconda cosa che ho notato è
in Italia esistono tavoli magici!
The second thing I’ve noticed is that in Italy
there are magic tables!
Non sto scherzando! Esistono davvero! Lasciatemi spiegare.
I’m not joking! They really exist! Let me explain.
Mi sembra che i tavoli da pranzo che si trovano in ogni casa o appartamento in Italia—quelli di modesta misura che si usa quotidiana… quando ci sono ospiti o parenti invitati a cena o pranzo i tavoli si allarghino magicamente per accogliere un battaglione di persone.
It seems to me that the dining tables found in every house or apartment in Italy—the modest ones that are used daily—when there are guests or relatives invited for dinner or lunch, the tables magically widen to accommodate a battalion of people.
E come per magia su queste tavole allungate, una quantità eccessiva di cibo appare dal nulla. Inoltre, come se un mago avesse lanciato un incantesimo, non ci si può alzare e lasciare la tavola… invece si resta lì per ore mangiando, bevendo, chiacchierando e ridendo. Uno rimane lì finché non si sente così pieno da essere pronto ad esplodere. E anche quando arrivano più piatti ed è incoraggiato a mangiarne ancora… in qualche modo lo fa! È incredibile. Ti dico che è decisamente sorprendente!
And as if by magic on these elongated tables, an excessive amount of food appears out of thin air. What’s more, as if a wizard had cast a spell, you can’t get up and leave the table… instead one stays there for hours eating, drinking, chatting and laughing. One stays there until he feels so full that he is ready to explode. And even when more dishes arrive and he is encouraged to eat some more… he somehow does! It is incredible. I tell you it downright spooky!

che illustra perfettamente queste osservazioni.
I want to tell you about a lovely experience I had in Puglia during Ferragosto that illustrates these things perfectly.
Diversi anni fa, io e la mia famiglia abbiamo deciso di ospitare una ragazza di Locorotondo per l’intero anno scolastico. Francesca è il suo nome e durante il periodo in cui è vissuta con noi negli Stati Uniti ci siamo avvicinati e siamo diventati grandi amici anche con la sua famiglia e gli amici in Italia. Così quando è tornata a casa in Italia, abbiamo deciso di seguirla qualche mese dopo, per incontrare la sua famiglia e vivere per la prima volta la Puglia.
Several years ago, my family and I decided to host a young girl from Locorotondo for the entire school year. Francesca is her name, and during the time she lived with us in the United States, we grew close, and we also became great friends with her family and friends in Italy. So when she returned home to Italy, we decided to follow a few months later to meet her family and experience Puglia for the first time.
Durante il nostro soggiorno a Locorotondo, Vittorio, il padre di Francesca, ci ha trovato un Trullo per allogiarci, a pochi passi dal loro appartamento. La famiglia di Francesca è gentile e molto accogliente e abbiamo trascorso molte cene insieme. Di solito facevamo pranzi semplice seduti attorno al tavolo della sala da pranzo della famiglia, in una stanza appena fuori dalla piccolo cucina, che si apriva anche nel soggiorno.
During our stay in Locorotondo, Vittorio, Francesca’s father, found a Trullo for us to stay in, walking distance to their apartment. Francesca’s family is lovely and very accommodating and we spent many dinners together. We usually had simple lunches sitting around the family dining room table, in a room just off the small kitchen, which also opened into the living room.
Quando la famiglia allargata di Francesca è stata invitata a pranzo, come ho detto prima, il tavolo da pranzo si è magicamente allargato fino alla parete di fondo del soggiorno per accogliere tutti. E poi il cibo è apparso in grande abbondanza, come dal nulla quando le zie hanno messo circa un migliaio di ciotole e piatti sul tavolo.
When Francesca’s extended family was invited to lunch, as I said before, the dining table magically expanded to the far wall in the living room to accommodate everyone. And then the food appeared in great abundance, as if out of nowhere when the aunts placed about a thousand bowls and plates of food upon the table.
Nella notte di Ferragosto il paese di Locorotondo si è animato di festaioli, pirotecnici e sfilate. Dopo aver visto passare l’immagine in legno di San Rocco, ci siamo diretti verso il trullo della cugina di Francesca, appena fuori città. Lì ci siamo seduti nel patio e abbiamo gustato i panzerotti che lo zio di Francesca ha cucinato in un forno all’aperto. Ognuno di noi ha preparato il suo panezerotto riempiendolo di carni, verdure, formaggi e salse varie.
On the night of Ferragosto, the town of Locorotondo came alive with festival-goers, fireworks, and parades. After we watched the wooden image of San Rocco pass by, we made our way to Francesca’s cousin’s Trullo just outside of town. There we sat on the patio and enjoyed panzerotti that Francesca’s uncle cooked in an outdoor oven. Each of us made our own personal panezerotto filling it with various meats, vegetables, cheeses, and sauces.
Dopo cena, abbiamo guardato i fuochi d’artificio esplodere davanti a noi sulla valle sottostante. Lo spettacolo è iniziato verso le dieci di sera. Poiché tre compagnie di fuochi d’artificio erano in competizione per un premio, lo spettacolo è continuato a lungo… finendo finalmente verso le due della mattina.
After dinner, we watched the fireworks exploding before us over the valley below. The show began around ten-o-clock at night. Because three firework companies were competing for a prize, the show continued on and on… finally finishing around two in the morning.
Eravamo stanchi e contenti e pronti a tornare nel nostro Trullo e andare a letto… ma invece siamo stati vivamente incoraggiati a tornare nel patio della casa della cugina di Francesca dove sarebbero stati serviti dolci, caramelle, liquori e altro vino!
We were tired and content and ready to return to our trullo and go to bed… but instead were heartily encouraged to return to the patio of Francesca’s cousin’s house where desserts, candies, liquers and more wine was going to be served!
A dire poco… sembrava una festa infinita
e una cena infinta!
To say the least… it felt like a never-ending party
and a never-ending dinner!
Ad ogni nuovo piatto di dolci, ci siamo sentito come se stessimo per scoppiare. Abbiamo continuato a mangiare, parlare e bere. Poi con uno svolazzo e molto dramma uno zio ha tirato fuori un enorme cocomero. Mentre lo metteva sul tavolo e iniziava a tagliarlo, gli occhi dei miei figli si sono allargati e mi hanno guardato increduli e mi hanno chiesto: “Mamma, quanto ci sarà ancora da mangiare???”
As each new plate of sweets was passed, we felt like we were going to burst. We continued eating, talking, and drinking. Then with a flourish and much drama Francesca’s uncle brought out an enormous watermelon. As he set it on the table and began carving it, my kids’ eyes grew large, and they looked at me in disbelief and asked, “Mamma, how much more will there be to eat???”
Ho riso e gli ho detti… “Tranquilli ragazzi… hanno tirato fuori la frutta… vuole dire che siamo alla fine del pasto!”
I laughed and said… don’t worry guys… they have brought out the fruit… that means we are at the end of the meal!
Infatti in italiano c’è il detto:
Siamo alla frutta! Che significa che
siamo arrivati alla fine delle cose.
In fact, in Italian, they have the saying: Siamo alla frutta!
Which means we have come to the end of things.
Erano circa le tre del mattino or forse più tardi, quando siamo tornati al nostro Trullo e ai nostri letti. Eravamo pieni ma felici e contenti… e disposti a rifare tutto da capo il giorno successivo.
It was around 3 in the morning or perhaps later, by the time we made it back to our Trullo and our beds. We were stuffed but happy and content… and willing to do it all over again the next day.
Ed è quello che abbiamo fatto!
