Hi again. It’s been a busy week. Recently I’ve been writing and posting a lot on the Matta blog I’m getting back to making YouTube videos. Perhaps you’ve noticed a little more activity on the blog. I’ve got this long list of ideas that keeps getting longer and longer. So stay tuned…more written posts to come.

In questo momento sto facendo una “pausa” prima di iniziare a scrivere il prossimo libro. Quando comincio a scrivere sparisco per giorni e giorni. È come entrare in un buco nero. Vengo consumato dal mondo che sto creando. Quindi per ora sto procrastinando un po’ mentre faccio la ricerca per il libro e gioco qui su Youtube con voi.
I’m in the lull before I start writing on my next book…when that happens I tend to get pulled into the process and don’t emerge for days! It is like entering a black hole. I become consumed by the world I am creating. So, instead, I’m kind of procrastinating…doing research and playing here instead of on the Youtube Channel!
Sto anche prendendo fiato dopo le vacanze. Anche voi? Ma tra poco ci sarà una festa magica a febbraio…che sfortunatamente, per la maggior parte, è festeggiata solo in Italia. Il carnevale. Mi piacerebbe prendervi parte e vestirmi bene. Potete immaginare come sarebbe indossare costumi come questi?
I’m also catching my breath after the holidays. But coming up is a truly magical holiday that is unfortunately for the most part only celebrated in Italy – Carnevale. I’d love to take part in the festivities and get dressed up. Can you just imagine wearing a costume like these?
Che ne pensate di queste parrucche? Le acconciature sono molto eleganti e immagino anche molto pesante. Date un’occhiata a questa signora con le sue calze bianche e le sue scarpe d’oro. E i fiocchi e i nastri sul vestito di quest’altra sono fantastici … per non parlare degli uccelli tra i capelli! E questa signora con il suo abito scollato e il suo corpino ornato di nastri e pizzi e gioielli scintillanti.
What do you think about these hair-dos? The hairstyles are very elegant but I imagine they are also very heavy. And look at this lady with her white stockings. The bows and satin ribbons on her dress and her golden shoes. Not to mention the butterflies in her hair! And this lady with her low-cut dress and bodice trimmed with ribbons and lace and sparking jewels.
In questa foto la donna tiene in mano un ventaglio. Un ventaglio. Da non confondere con un ventilatore. Un ventilatore – che è grande, ha una spina e funziona con l’elettricità. Una volta ho fatto un errore imbarazzante. In una giornata molto calda a Roma, fuori dal Vaticano, sono entrata in un negozio di cianfrusaglie e ho chiesto un “ventilatore.” Ho pensato che sarebbe stato utile per rinfrescarmi all’interno del museo. La donna mi ha guardata con un’espressione buffa e mi ha detto: “ma signora dove vuole attaccare la spina?” Poi mi sono accorta del mio errore. Ma è un ottimo modo per ricordare la parola ventaglio! Facendo errori si impara meglio, no?
In this picture the woman is holding a fan…not to be confused with a motorized fan. I once made that mistake. On a very hot day in Rome outside the Vatican I entered a small shop and asked in to buy a fan. I thought it would be useful to keep cool inside the museum. I asked the sales lady for a ventilator. She gave me the funniest look. I then realized my mistake! But it’s a great way to remember the word for a hand fan!
Mi è sempre piaciuto collezionare maschere. Nel mio studio ho una collezione sul muro. In particolare le maschere veneziane sono una tradizione di Venezia. In genere vengono indossate durante il Carnevale e vengono utilizzate per nascondere l’identità. Una maschera permetteva a chi la indossava di agire più liberamente nei casi in cui lui o lei voleva interagire con altre persone della società al fuori dei limiti delle convenzioni quotidiane. Era utile per una varietà di scopi, alcuni dei quali illeciti, altri solo personali, come gli incontri romantici.
I have always loved collecting masks. In my office, I have a collection on the wall. Venetian masks are a centuries-old tradition of Venice. Typically they are worn during Carnival and are used to hide the wearer’s identity and social status. The masks would permit the wearer to act more freely in cases where he or she wanted to interact with other members of the society outside the bounds of everyday convention. It was useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters.
Tra le mie maschere preferite ci sono le maschere Bauta che in genere sono indossate dagli uomini. È una maschera austera solitamente nera, bianca o dorata ed è lo stile più antico della maschera veneziana. Di solito è indossata con un cappello e un mantello nero chiamato Tabarro.
Some of my favorite masks are the Bauta masks that typically men wear. It is an austere mask usually black or white or gold and it is the oldest style of the Venetian mask. It is usually worn with a Tricorn Hat and a black cape called a Tabarro.
Ci sono esempi di questo tipo di maschere nei dipinti di Pietro Longhi che dipinse scene popolari della vita veneziana durante il diciassettesimo secolo. Penso che la maschera sia molto insolita e un po’ romantica. In una scena del mio romanzo Dreaming Sophia uno dei personaggi indossa una maschera del genere.
There are examples of this kind of mask in the paintings of Pietro Longhi who painted popular everyday scenes of Venetian life during the 1700s. I think the mask is very unusual and kind of romantic. In a scene in my book Dreaming Sophia, one of the characters wears such a mask.
Un’altra maschera molto popolare per le donne è quella di Colombina. È una mezza maschera che copre solo gli occhi, lasciando la bocca libera per mangiare, bere…e baciare! Questo tipo di maschera prende il nome dal personaggio di una ragazza impertinente della commedia dell’arte.
Another very popular mask for women, of course, is the Colombina mask. It is a half mask that covers just the eyes, leaving the mouth free for eating, drinking…and kissing! This type of mask is named after the character of the saucy maid from the Commedia dell’arte theater plays.
Quando ero a Venezia lo scorso autunno non ho potuto resistere di visitare un negozio dove fanno le maschere a mano e ho acquistato queste maschere. Una Bauta e una Colombina. Il negozio si chiama Ca’ del Sole e un gruppo degli artisti disegnano le maschere a mano. Eccomi a Halloween! Ho deciso di indossare la maschera e il mantello che ho trovato nella bottega di Ca’ del Sole.
When I was in Venice last fall I couldn’t resist visiting a shop where they make masks by hand and purchasing these masks. A Bauta mask and a Colombina. The shop is called Ca’ del Sole and a group of artists hand make the masks. That’s me on Halloween! I decided to wear the mask and cape I found in the fascinating shop of Ca’ del Sole.
