Sono appena tornata da un mese favoloso trascorso in Italia. Potreste pensare che ormai sarei stufa di viaggiare in Italia…ma avreste torto. Non vedo l’ora di tornare per un altro mese a settembre!
I have just returned from a fabulous month in Italy. You might think I have had my fill of il Bel Paese…but you would be wrong. I can’t wait to return for another month this coming September!
Cosa mi riporta in Italia più e più volte? Potrei parlare di un centinaio di cose…ma in cima alla lista: 1) le persone. 2) la lingua. 3) le sorprese e i contrasti inaspettati che incontro ogni volta che ci vado.
What brings me back to Italy over and over and over again you ask? I could name a hundred things…but at the top of the list would: 1) The people. 2) The language. 3) The unexpected surprises and contrasts I always encounter there.
Per me è pura gioia parlare in italiano e prima che atterri l’aereo che mi sta portando in Italia cerco di connettermi con altri che parlano la lingua che stanno tornando a casa o che stanno facendo una vacanza in Italia. Una volta che i miei piedi toccano il suolo, essere circondata dal linguaggio musicale che è ormai una seconda natura per me è un immenso piacere – è anche un trionfo aver imparato la lingua così bene. Ogni giorno in Italia è un gioiello per me perché semplicemente aprendo la bocca e parlando la lingua porta sempre un sorriso enorme sul viso di qualcuno e creo un’opportunità unica per fare una nuova amicizia.
For me, it is pure joy to speak in Italian, and even before the plane that is carrying me to Italy lands, I am looking to connect with others who speak the language who are either headed home to Italy or are returning there for vacation. Once my feet hit the ground, to be surrounded by the musical language that is by now second nature to me is a huge high. Each day in Italy is a gem for me because simply opening my mouth and speaking the language always always brings a huge smile to someone’s face and creates a unique opportunity to make a new friend.
A causa di questo implacabile desiderio di diventare fluente e incontrare gente interessante, le mie esperienze in Italia continuano a migliorare sempre di più. Non posso dire quante volte il linguaggio mi ha aperto le porte portandomi in posti che non avrei mai immaginato esistessero. E mentre giro per il Paese, facendo nuove conoscenze e collegandomi con gli amici, alcuni che ho incontrato solo online – transformando le amicizie di internet a amicizie personali – quello che mi colpisce di più dell’Italia sono i favolosi contrasti che vedo sempre.
Because of this relentless desire to become fluent and meet interesting people my experiences in Italy just keep getting better and better. I can’t tell you all how many times, the language has opened doors taking me places I never could ever have imagined possible. And as I travel around the country, making new acquaintances and linking up with friends, some I have only met online – turning internet friendships into personal ones – what strikes me the most about Italy is the fabulous contrasts I always encounter.
Per esempio – durante quest’ultimo viaggio….nel mezzo di Piazza Grande ad Arezzo, I miei amici ed io abbiamo intrattenuto una conversazione con una donna simpatica. Ci ha invitato a casa sua e ha preparato un caffè sul fornello e ha messo biscotti di cioccolato – marca Mulino Bianco – su un semplice piatto. Poi ci ha mostrato il suo giardino e prima di partire ma raccolta un mazzo di erba fresca di “Melissa” che coltiva nel suo giardino. Ci ha invitati a tornare il giorno seguente.
Take for instance this last trip. In the middle of Piazza Grande in Arezzo, my friends and I struck up a conversation with a delightful woman. She invited us back to her apartment and made us coffee in her Moka coffee pot. She ripped open a bag of Mulino Bianco chocolate cookies and dumped them onto a plate and offered them to us. Then she showed us her garden and before leaving offered me a handful of fresh Melissa herb that she grows in her garden. She invited us to return the following day.
Tre giorni dopo, sono a Roma per incontrare la mia amica Maura Garau che dirige Cyber Italian nel raffinato ristorante di Nico Sinisgalli – Ristorante Tazio in Piazza della Republicca. Un ristorante in cui Sophia Loren festeggia il suo compleanno! Abbiamo pranzato su di capesante coperte di oro vero, un favoloso creme al pesce, e per dessert – c’era un’esibizione stravagante di dolci squisiti mostrati da una nuvola spumeggiante di ghiaccio secco. Alla fine del pasto, lo chef mi ha abbracciato e mi ha offerto una copia firmata del suo meraviglioso libro di cucina.
Three days later, I am in Rome meeting my friend Maura Garau who runs Cyber Italian in the posh restaurant of Nico Sinisgalli – Ristorante Tazio in Piazza della Republicca. A restaurant in which Sophia Loren celebrates her birthday! We ate scallops dolloped with real gold, fabulous fish mouses and for dessert, there was an extravagant display of exquisite dolci that were showcased by a frothy cloud of dry ice. At the end of the meal, the chef embraced me and offered me a signed copy of his marvelous cookbook.
Entrambi gli incontri erano estremamente diversi…ma alla fine della giornata, le emozioni e il calore erano gli stessi. In entrambi i casi, si è creata una connessione significativa…e c’era sempre l’invito di tornare presto! La mi vita è più ricca grazie a queste due esperienze deliziose.
Both encounters were extremely diverse…but at the end of the day, the emotions and the warmth were the same. In both instances, a warm connection was made…and there was always the invitation to return soon! My life is so much richer because of these two delightful experiences.
Certo, l’Italia offre così tanti altri contrasti: ho vistitato la cittadina di Civita il paese che muore in cui vivono 7 persone in inverno e 100 in estate. Ho vissuto per due settimane a Montepucliano una piccola città costruita su una collina nel mezzo della campagna – piccolo e intima. Mi sono trasferita ad Arezzo per una settimana, tornando per vedere la Giostra Notturna. La città è più grande delle altre è c’è più attiviatà e commercio. Poi sono andata a Roma – grande, affollata, turistica – e rumorosa! Ogni città ha presentato la sua identità speciale – c’è qualcosa per ogni gusto!
Of course, Italia offers so many other contrasts: I visited the small town of Civita – the city that is dying – in which 7 people live in the winter and 100 in the summer. I lived for two weeks in Montepulciano town built on a hill that was small and intimate. I moved on to Arezzo for a week, returning to take part in the evening Joust. The town is medium-sized and there is more activity and commerce. Then it was on to Rome – large, crowded and touristy AND noisy. Each city presented its own unique slant on the Italian experience…something for every taste.
Ho notato ancora più contrasti in tutte le chiese che ho visitato… e ne ho viste molte! Dalle semplici chiese romaniche della Toscana a San Biagio a Montepulciano, la chiese di San Francesco ad Arezzo fino alle chiese ben decorate nello stile barocco a Roma. San Ignazio è sempre una delizia con le decorazioni essagerate!
I noted even more contrasts in all the churches I visited…and I saw many! From the simple Romanesque churches Tuscany to San Biagio in Montepulciano, San Francesco in Arezzo to the pomp and circumstance of the baroque churches in Rome.San Ignazio is over the top in its extravagance!
E il cibo! Lasciatemi spiegare! Il divertimento non finisce mai quando si tratta di cibo! In Italia ogni pasto è una festa per lo stomaco e gli occhi. Non importa se sto mangiando le patatine e bevendo uno Spritz, gustando un piatto di pasta fatto in casa o concedendomi una grande pezzo di bistecca toscana!
And the food…let me tell you – the fun never ends – each meal is a feast whether I’m eating potato chips and drinking a spritz, enjoying a homemade plate of pasta or indulging in a big slab of Tuscan bistecca!
Ora parliamo di musica! Venite ad Arezzo solo un paio di giorni durante la Giostra e troverete ogni tipo di musica da tamburi medievali alle marce militari, dal rock moderno alla musica da discoteca che scatena nelle piazze mentre gli Arentini festeggiano nelle strade in preparazione del festival della giostra.
Now let’s talk music! Just hang out in Arezzo a couple of days during the Joust and you will encounter the gambit from medieval drums and military marches to hard pumping modern rock and jamming disco music in the piazzas as the Arentini celebrate in the streets in preparation for the jousting festival.
