Io, Arlecchino directed by Matteo Bini starring Giorgio Pasotti

Venerdì sera sono andata a una proiezione di un nuovo film scritto e diretto da Matteo Bini e interpretato da Giorgio Pasotti. Il titolo del film è“Io, Arlecchino” Non ero solo colpita, perché ho avuto l’occasione di stringere personalmente la mano di Matteo e ascoltarlo parlare del suo film alla fine della visione, ma mi sono proprio innamorata subito del film.

Last Friday night I went to a screening of a new movie written and directed by Matteo Bini and starring Giorgio Pasotti. The title of the film is “Io, Arlecchino”. Not only was I star-struck, because I got to personally shake hands with Matteo and listen to him discuss his film at the end of the viewing, but I also fell immediately in love with the film.

Dalla prima scena in cui un vecchio attore indossa la sua maschera della Commedia dell’arte e sorride allo specchio con un ghigno burlesco nei panni di Arlecchino la storia mi ha conquistato. Ci sono volute solo quattro settimane per girare il film, che, si svolge in una piccola cittadina di Bergamo, anche la città natale del direttore Matteo e dell’attore principale, Giorgio. Il cast di attori comprende anche le interpretazioni di Roberto Herlitzka, Valeria Bilello, Lunetta Savino e Gianni Ferreri.

From the opening scene in which an aging actor dons his Comedia dell Arte mask and smiles into the mirror using the burlesque grin of the character Arlecchino I was hooked. The film, which only took four weeks to film, takes place in a tiny little town in Bergamo, also the hometown of both Matteo, the director, and the film’s leading actor, Giorgio. The cast of actors also includes fine performances by Roberto Herlitzka, Valeria Bilello, Lunetta Savino and Gianni Ferreri.

Subito ci si rende conto che questo è un film dolce e siamo catturati dalle scene di un grazioso piccolo borgo medievale nebbioso, situato in alto nella regione montuosa del nord Italia. La scena moderna di una società quale di Rome (che batte con un vibrazione sessuale) contrasta abilmente con i ciottoli e la rusticità di un villaggio di montagna dove i segnali televisivi raramente arrivano e dove la popolazione di capre supera notevolmente il numero di persone.

At once one recognizes that this is a sweet film and we are treated to scenes of a lovely misty medieval village, set high in the mountainous region of northern Italy. It deftly contrasts the modern-day scene of a contemporary society in Rome that beats to a sexual vibe, against the cobblestones and rustic nature of a mountain village where TV signals seldom reach and where the population of goats greatly outnumbers the number of people.

La trama del film ruota attorno a Paolo, un famoso ospite di un talk show, che è un programma pomeridianio. Quando riceve una chiamata dopo una registrazione di uno dei suoi “reality show”,  viene a sapere che suo padre, Giovanni è in un ospedale e subito decide di tornare a casa a Cornello dei Tasso, in provincia di Bergamo. Scopre che suo padre è gravemente malato. Giovanni, un ex attore teatrale, famoso per il suo ruolo di “Arlecchino” ha deciso di trascorrere i suoi ultimi mesi a recitare con la piccola compagnia teatrale locale in programmi ispirati alla “Commedia dell’Arte”.

The plot of the movie revolves around Paolo a well-known host of an afternoon TV talk show. When he receives a phone after a taping of one of his “reality shows” he learns that his father, Giovanni has been hospitalized and returns home to Cornello dei Tassi, in the Province of Bergamo. He discovers that his father is seriously ill. Giovanni, a former theatrical actor, famous for his role as “Arlecchino” has decided to spend his last months continuing to perform with the town’s small theater company in plays inspired by the “Commedia dell’Arte.”

Paolo arriva presto a capire la falsità dei suoi contributi personali e delle attività nel campo dello spettacolo televisivo. Il suo lavoro sembra banale rispetto alla recitazione vera e appassionata del padre e degli altri attori del teatro che veramente vogliono perfezionare l’arte per creare qualcosa degno degli applausi di un grande pubblico. Paolo essendo un Talk Show Host moderno, indossa e si nasconde dietro una maschera invisibile. D’altra parte, gli attori del teatro della Commedia dell’Arte che indossano le maschere per nascondere i loro volti, sono più autentici e genuini nella loro recitazione.

Paolo soon comes to realize the falsity of his personal contributions and activities in the field of television entertainment. His work seems trivial when compared to the true impassioned acting of his father and the other theater actors who truly want to craft their art and create something worthy of an audience’s applause. Paolo being a modern-day talk host, indeed wears and hides behind an invisible mask. On the other hand, while the stage actors of the Comedia dell’arte all wear masks to conceal their faces, there is more authenticity and genuineness in their performances.

Il film risuona con un’intensità emotiva e racconta un importante messaggio. Dà una sfida di cercare autenticità e bellezza nel mondo, di non abbassarsi ad assecondare e sostenere trame senza senso, non solo ai personaggi del film ma anche al pubblico pure. Il film non dovrebbe essere visto come un messaggio moraleggiante e un ammonimento, contro la televisione moderna. Nè dovrebbe essere visto come un messaggio che i figli devono seguire le orme del padre.

The movie resonates with poignancy and delivers an important message. It challenges not only the characters in the film to seek authenticity in the world, to seek beauty and not stoop to pandering and supporting meaningless babble, but also the audience as well. But, the film shouldn’t be taken as a moralizing message and an admonishment, intended to demonize modern-day TV. Nor should it be seen as a commentary that sons should follow in their father’s footsteps. 

Piuttosto il film di Bini, in un modo amorevole e premuroso, ci incoraggia a scavare in profondità per presentare i lati migliori di noi stessi. Il suo messaggio è la celebrazione dell’autenticità, e per applaudire quello che ci muove veramente. In questo modo inviamo un messaggio al mondo su ciò che è degno del nostro tempo e attenzione.

Rather Bini’s film, in a loving and thoughtful way, encourages us to dig deep to present the best sides of ourselves. His message is that of the celebration of authenticity, to applaud that which truly moves us. In this way, we send a message out into the world about what is worthy of our time and attention.
