Inheritance by Marianne Perry: Book Review

Eccomi con un nuovo libro per il Book Tour di Laura Fabiani. In questo momento vi sto scrivendo da Lucca, dove sto passando due settimane favolose con dieci studenti scoprendo sempre di più la bellezza di questo paese. Faccio una pausa per parlarvi di un nuovo libro intitolato “The Inheritance” scritto da Marianne Perry.

I am back with a new novel on the Italy Bloggers Book tour directed by Laura Fabiani. At the moment I am writing to you from Lucca, where I am spending two fabulous weeks with ten enthusiastic language students! But, I wanted to take a moment out of our busy day exploring the area to pass on information about a new book called The Inheritance was written by Marianne Perry.

Marianne è una canadese-italiana di seconda generazione. Il suo romanzo storico è ambientato in Calabria, nell’Italia meridionale, dal 1897 al 1913. La trama è stata in parte ispirata dai primi anni della vita di sua nonna. “The Inheritance” racconta la storia di una famiglia distrutta da lealtà conflittuali . Marianne is a second-generation Canadian-Italian. Her historical fiction is a romance set in Calabria, southern Italy from 1897 to 1913. The storyline was semi-inspired by her grandmother’s early life. “The Inheritance,” tells the story of a family disintegrating from conflicting loyalties. Calabria is the backdrop of the story in a time when poverty was the norm and strong intelligent females were not regarded as equals to men. The story of “The Inheritance” demonstrates the author’s interest in genealogy. She writes a blog about genealogical research and shares advice on how to conduct your own investigation into your family’s history.

La Calabria è situata a sud-ovest dell’Italia, e’ la punta dello stivale. La regione è piena di bellezze naturali e città spettacolari che sono arroccate su cime scoscese. Confina a nord con la Basilicata, a ovest con il Mar Tirreno e ad est con il Mar Ionio. Ci sono centinaia di feste e sagre tutto l’anno. La zona mi ha sempre affascinata e mi piacerebbe viaggiare di più nella regione. Vi devo confessare che fino ad adesso, ho messo solo un “piede” in Calabria durante una visita recente a Maratea in Basilicata.

Calabria is located in southwest Italy, occupying the toe of the country’s boot-shaped peninsula. The region contains startling natural beauty and spectacular towns that are perched on craggy mountaintops. It is bordered to the north by the region of Basilicata, to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and to the east by the Ionian Sea. There are hundreds of music and food festivals in this area all year-round. The area fascinates me and I would like to travel more extensively in the region. I have to confess that I have only placed a “toe” into Calabria during a visit to Maratea in the Basilicata.

Il mese scorso ho aperto il libro “The Inheritance” con grandi aspettative ed ero pronta per saperne di più su questa regione interessante. Alla fine del libro, pero’, ero un po’ sorpresa di aver imparato poco di questa regione. Le descrizioni erano abbastanza pallide e non hanno soddisfatto la mia voglia di saperne di più della storia locale e dello splendore geologico. La storia si concentra molto, invece, sulle dinamiche di una familia disfunzionale. Quindi preparatevi a leggere una storia d’amore romanzata e non tanto una descrizione dettagliata della zona, delle persone o delle usanze della Calabria a cavallo del secolo.

Last month I eagerly picked up the book “The Inheritance” and was prepared to get to know better this interesting region. However, by the end of the book, I was disappointed to have learned very little about this country. The descriptions of this area were fairly bland and didn’t satisfy my craving to know more of the local history and geological splendor. Instead, the story focuses very much on the dynamics of a dysfunctional family. So be prepared to enjoy a fictionalized historical romance, instead of a detailed look into the area, the people or the customs of Calabria at the turn of the century.
